INTRODUCTION
SILER CITY, NORTH CAROLINA
INTRODUCTION
Southern Directory Company, publishers of the Siler City direc- tory, takes pleasure in presenting the 1962-1963 edition to the general public. The work embodies all available and vital data relating to thé civic, commercial, financial, social and industrial interests and activities of the municipality, and the publishers add their assurance that the work is complete in all its parts.
The publishers enjoy the prestige and advantage of a complete organization. and thorough system essential in the production of direc- tories and the additional advantage of having the courteous co-operation of citizens in furnishing information. These factors, added to the liberal support of patrons as shown by the advertisements displayed upon the printed page, were vital to the success of the publication.
Confidence in the growth of Siler City, in its wealth, industry and population, as well as in the advancement of its municipal and social activities, will be created as sections of this directory are consulted, for truly, the directory is a mirror reflecting Siler Ciy to the world.
Your attention is invited to those names appearing in DISPLAY BLACK TYPE throughout the directory, as they are the responsible enterprising, advertising business men who take pride in sustaining the city directory and who have made this publication possible.
POPULATION
The 1962 population of Greater Siler City is 6,211, based on the number of individuals found by actual canvass at each residence. Territory immediately adjacent, which is part of the city, as far as business and social life are concerned, is included in the directory.
FIVE MAJOR DEPARTMENTS
The several essential departments are arranged in the following order.
THE MISCELLANEOUS DIRECTORY, containing valuable informa- tion concerning State and National Governments.
THE NUMERICAL TELEPHONE DIRECTORY, listing telephone sub- scribers by telephone numbers, can be found beginning with page 33.
THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES contains data concerning each individual, firm and corporation within the city. The wife's name is given in parenthesis and is followed by position, place of employ- ment and resident address.
THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY contains the various

INTRODUCTION
names of all manufacturing, mercantile and professional interests in alphabetical order under appropriate headings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indispensable epitome of the business interests of the community.
THE STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE contains a complete directory of streets and avenues arranged in alphabetical order; the residences and business houses are arranged numerically under the name of each street and avenue, and the names of householders, with the number of occupants, and business concerns are placed opposite the numbers.
MUNICIPAL PUBLICITY
The directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the city depicting in truthful terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as an industrial site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information over the country, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the directory in Directory Libraries, which are maintained in all the chief cities of the country. Here they are readily available for free public reference and serve as perpetual advertisements of Siler City, for business men the country over realize that the city directory represents the community as it really is.
The modern City Directory is a business institution. It occupies a place peculiarly its own. It is necessary to the progress and develop- ment of a city. The advertising in this Directory is suggestive of the stability and permanency of the advertisers. You like to patronize those concerns who are in business to stay because such business establish- ments stand back of the wares they sell; it is a noteworthy fact that concerns which advertise one year in the City Directory are there again next year. Directory advertising is profitable.

PREFACE
SILER CITY, N. C. "BALANCED FOR PROGRESS"
PREFACE
Siler City is a small, progressive town located near the geographical center of North Carolina. With a population of about three thousand within the corporate limits and another thousand in the immediate suburban area, Siler City is the largest town in Chatham County.
The terrain is gently rolling and the climate is very favorable. In the twenty-six year period covered by the weather records, no single day's snowfall has amounted to as much as one foot, and the greatest depth on the ground at any one time was only ten inches. The sun shines about sixty percent of the daylight hours in the Siler City area, ranging from about half the time in the winter to two-thirds of the time in the late spring and early autumn.
The business climate in Siler City is excellent and the people would welcome additional industry. As evidence of this, local manu- facturers, merchants, and professional men, have formed the Siler City Development Corporation to attract new industry and to provide financing when needed.
The labor supply is stable and highly trainable. The people are generally conservative and believe in giving an honest day's work for a day's pay. The number of surrounding small farms provides an excellent source of recruitable labor. In addition, a goodly number of high school graduates enter the labor market each year.
The water supply is capable of handling greatly increased future requirements. The town's old 160,000,000 gallon raw water storage reservoir is adequate to meet today's needs; but, looking to the future, an additional 200,000,000 gallon storage reservoir was completed in August 1958.
Community facilities include a completely centrally air-conditioned hospital with 50-bed capacity; a new school plant complete with gym- nasium and shop building; varied recreational facilities including a $110,000 swimming pool, a country club and golf course; adequate fire and police protection; communications facilities that include local news- paper, radio, telegraph, and inter-toll dialing telephone facilities.
Transportation facilities include railroad; service from 21 motor trucking lines; municipal airport to accommodate private planes up to the most modern twin-engine airplane; and two large commercial air- ports, each of which can be reached by a 55 minute drive.
Adequate and dependable electric power is furnished by Carolina Power & Light Company, with rates regulated by the State Utilities Commission.
The financial structures of both county and town governments are in excellent condition. The county tax rate is exceptionally low and the town tax rate is reasonable.
