STATESVILLE, N. C.

IREDELL COUNTY PREFACE

Population: 13,000. Directory population of city and adjacent terri- tory, 17,163.

Railroads: Southern, A.T.&O.

Highways: Routes Nos. 10, 26, 90 and 115.

Average rain: 61.25. Average temperature: 60.8.

LOCATION

The City of Statesville is located in western North Carolina, about midway between the Virginia and South Carolina state lines. It is in the center of Iredell County, of which it is the county seat and principal city. This locality is in the heart of the Piedmont Section of North Caro- lina. Charlotte is some 40 miles directly south of Statesville, while Raleigh, the state capital, is 150 miles to the east. The surrounding country is high, rolling, well drained land. The Catawba River, into which the drainage from this section empties, is some 10 miles to the southwest. A network of national and state hard surface highways radiates from Statesville. The highway system includes Route No. 10, from the Atlantic Coast to the Tennessee-Georgia line, Route No. 26, a Great Lakes to Florida highway, Route No. 90, from south North Caro- lina to Blowing Rock, connecting at Lenoir through to the coast, and Route No. 115 to Winston Salem. Bus service operated by the Queen City Bus Company, 30 schedules, and the Greyhound Lines provides 56 busses to all points daily. 6 Parkway busses every 24 hours. A number of motor truck lines operating out of and through Statesville provide frequent and rapid highway freight and express service.

CLIMATE

Statesville and the surrounding country enjoy the splendid climatic conditions of the well-known Piedmont Section. The high plateau, protected by mountain ranges, provides a mild, even climate, free from prolonged extremes of temperature, with generous but not excessive rainfall. There is no interference with outdoor activities from freezing or snowfall. Destructive winds are practically unknown. The elevation and temperature combine to provide healthful living and industrial con- ditions and to minimize fuel costs.

BUSINESS INSTITUTIONS

Two state banks, with total resources in excess of 13/4 million dollars, serve the local commercial and industrial requirements in Statesville. There is also an industrial bank serving individual needs reporting resources of $160,000. There are some 250 retail establishments in the city, catering to the needs of all classes. In addition to its own require- ments, the city serves as a trading and wholesale distributing center, supplying a wide surrounding area. Several wholesale houses distri- bute groceries, dry goods and hardware from Statesville.

TRANSPORTATION

Rail transportation service at Statesville is provided by the Southern Railway System and the A. T. & O., a branch of the Southern. The line

from New York to Memphis passes through the city and is intersected at Statesville by the line from Tailorsville to Charlotte, North Carolina, to Jacksonville, Florida. Connections at Spencer Transfer, 30 miles to the east, provide quick freight service north to all principal markets, and south and southwest to the principal coastal and industrial cities of the south. Passenger train service is provided with 8 passenger trains daily. Excellent undeveloped industrial sites are available within or immediate- ly outside the city limits, adjacent to both railroad lines and highways.

LABOR

A splendid type of labor is available in this section. There are at present employed in manufacturing activities in the community some 5,000, including male and female. 70 manufacturing industries. Yearly payroll in industries, $1,875,000.00. A wide range of skilled classifica- tions are included, for the reason that present industrial activities are widely diversified. However, the largest portion of the workers are experienced in textiles or wood-working, which are the predominating industries at present. A large potential labor supply, probably more than equal to that now engaged, is available in Statesville and the im- mediate surrounding communities. Untrained workers in this section, because they are of an unusually intelligent type, willing and anxious to engage in industrial pursuits, are easily trained and make dependable, skilled workers. New industries of considerable scope could be quickly staffed without importing workers from a distance. There is no labor disturbance or agitating elements in this district, and destructive strikes are unknown. Labor rates are moderate, and it is feasible for the worker to maintain a satisfactory standard of living at moderate payment rates, for the reason that living costs are much lower than those in effect in the larger and more congested areas of the north and east. Manufac- turing wages of course conform with the textile and other national codes, all of which provide for a lower wage scale in this area than is in effect in the higher living cost northern areas of the country.

ELECTRIC POWER

Electric current for power and light is furnished to domestic and in- dustrial users of Statesville from the vast power developments of the Duke Power Company. Distribution is made by the city's Light and Power Department, up to and including 12,680,000 K.W.H. for year June, 1942-June, 1943. Industries requiring greater amounts contract directly with the generating company. Power is brought into Statesville over three transmission lines owned by the Duke Power Company. The quantity available is unlimited, and the rates to industrial users favorable.

FUEL

Coal for industrial purposes is at present available in Statesville from the Tennessee, Kentucky and West Virginia fields. Domestic and car load lots, $8.00-$10.50 per ton delivered. Gas for domestic and industrial purposes is available throughout the city.

WATER SUPPLY

The city's water supply is taken from the near-by streams, from which it is pumped to settling basins. The water after filtering passes to a stand-pipe of 150,000 gallons capacity. The present capacity of the

water plant is more than 2,000,000 gallons in 24 hours. 1,000,000 storage at plant.

TAXES

The city and county taxe rates in effect in Statesville are moderate when the services to its citizens are considered. The city rate is 85 cents per hundred and the county rate $1.18 per hundred on an assessed valuation equivalent to 50% of estimated actual values. All taxes are included. There are no special taxes for schools or other purposes. The State of North Carolina makes no property tax assessment.

EDUCATION

An excellent public educational system is maintained in Statesville. The grammar schools are housed in three modern, fire-proof buildings. The system also includes a fully accredited senior high school and junior high school, housed in their own up-to-date building. Two schools are provided for those of the colored race. The total enrollment in these schools is 3,628, which is cared for by a teaching staff of 83 people. Statesville is also the seat of Mitchell College, a co-educational institution sponsored by the Presbyterian Church.

CHURCHES

All the principal religious faiths are represented in Statesville. There are located in the city 19 churches for the white population and five churches for colored people.

ATTITUDE TOWARD INDUSTRY

While the City of Statesville is an old established community and the present home of a number of old and important industrial enterprises, its alert citizenry are alive to the advantages of further industrial develop- ment and the opportunities available there for new industrial activities. Prospective industrial undertakings will find local business men, as represented by an active Chamber of Commerce, eager to extend intelli- gent co-operation. Not only are no local governmental restrictions or handicaps placed in the way of new enterprises, but, on the other hand, the local government and business officials co-operate in planning favor- able industrial surroundings.

CITY GOVERNMENT

The municipal government of the City of Statesville is maintained on the Aldermanic Plan, its body being composed of eight Aldermen in addition to the Mayor. The city government protective services include well organized Fire and Police Departments. The Fire Department maintains five paid men and a volunteer corps. The equipment consists of two American-La France 700 gallon combination pumpers, one Dodge 500 gallon pump and 400 gallon storage tank, one Dodge ladder truck. There are 320 fire hydrants, in which water pressure is constantly main- tained throughout the city. The police force is composed of twelve full- time paid day and night men. The city maintains some 30 miles of paved streets, complete with sidewalks. White way lighting is main- tained on main streets, and adequate lighting is provided throughout the city. A modern sewage disposal plant is employed.
