PREFACE

or snowfall. Destructive winds are practically unknown. The elevation and temperature combine to provide healthful living and industrial conditions.
BUSINESS INSTITUTIONS
One State and one National Bank serve the local commercial and industrial requirements with an industrial bank for individual needs show resources of $715,000,000. In addition two savings and loan asso- ciations have resources of $11,229,000 available for home and business construction. Some 305 retail and service establishments serve the city and a wide surrounding area.
RAIL TRANSPORTATION
Rail transportation service is afforded by the Southern Railway System and the Alexander Railroad. Connections at Spencer Transfer 30 miles to the east provide quick freight service to all the principal markets and to the southern coastal cities. Passenger train service is provided by convenient schedules. Excellent undeveloped industrial sites are available within or immediately outside the city limits with all utility services, highway and railway advantages.
LABOR
A splendid type of labor is available in the section. Over 105 manufacturing industries employ a large number of labor, male and female. A wide range of skilled classifications are included, for the reason that present industrial activities are widely diversified. However, the larger portion of the workers are experienced in textiles or wood- working, these being the predominating industries at present. The basic industry of Iredell County is farming and with the advent of the Carna- tion Condensery in 1939, dairying and cattle breeding has become a major agricultural industry.
A large potential labor supply is available in Statesville and im- mediate surrounding communities. Unskilled workers from this vicinity because of unusual intelligence are easily trained and make dependable, skilled workers. New industries can be staffed without.importing work- ers from a distance. There is no labor disturbance or agitating elements in this area; destructive strikes are unknown. Manufacturing wages of course conform with the various national codes.
ELECTRIC POWER
Electric current for power and light is furnished to domestic and industrial users of Statesville from the vast power developments of the Duke Power Company with distribution through the City's Light and Power Department, up to and including. 92,500.000 K. W. H. for the year of 1961. Power is brought into Statesville over three transmission lines

owned by the Duke Power Company and distributed over a new city electrical system costing over three-quarters of a million dollars.
FUEL
Coal, natural gas, bottled gas, and fuel oil are available at reason- able rates in unlimited quantities to both domestic and industrial consumers.
WATER SUPPLY
The city's water supply is taken from Fourth creek and South Yadkin river which combined have an 18,000,000 minimum gallon flow per day from which it is pumped to settling basins. The water after filtering passes to two elevated stand-pipes of 1,000,000 gallons capacity each. Present capacity of water plant is 4,500,000 gallons daily with 1,000,000 storage at plant.
SANITATION
Sewage facilities have now been extended to every section of the city and some areas outside the city. There are six lift stations and a modern sewage disposal plant, adequate for years, which treats and filters the sewage. This plant recently enlarged and modernized.
Scheduled garbage service, free of charge, is trucked out of city where it is buried in a sanitary fill.
TAXES
The city and county tax rates in effect in Statesville are moderate when the service to its citizens are considered. The city rate of 79, and the county 95¢ per hundred on an assessed valuation equivalent to 75 percent of estimated 1960 level. No special taxes. (1961 val. $68,000,000).
EDUCATION
An excellent public educational system is maintained in Statesville. The grammar schools are housed in three modern, fire-proof buildings; fully accredited high school and junior high school housed in their own up-to-date buildings. Two schools are provided for those of the colored race. The total enrollment in these schools is 4600 which is cared for by a teaching staff of 131 people. Statesville is the seat of Mitchell College, a co-educational institution owned and operated through a community foundation.
CHURCHES
All the principle religious faiths are represented by churches in Statesville for both white and colored citizens.

PREFACE
of old and important industrial enterprises, its alert citizenry are alive to the advantages of further industrial development and the opportunities available here for new industrial activities. Prospective industrial under- takings will find local business men, as represented by an active, fully staffed Chamber of Commerce, eager to extend intelligent cooperation. No local government restrictions or handicaps are placed in the way of new enterprises, but on the other hand local government and business officials cooperate in planning favorable industrial surroundings.
CITY GOVERNMENT
The municipal government of the City of Statesville is maintained on the Council-Manager Plan, its body being composed of six Alder- men in addition to the Mayor. The city government protective services include well organized Police and Fire Departments, housed in new, modern buildings. The police force is composed of twenty-five full time paid day and night men selected through Civil Service appointment. The fire department maintains thirteen paid men and a volunteer corps. The equipment consists of two American-La France 1750 gallon com- bination pumpers, one Dodge 500 gallon pump and 400 gallon storage tank, one Dodge ladder truck and one American-La France hook and aerial ladder truck.
There are 340 fire hydrants in which full water pressure is constantly maintained. The city maintains some 66 miles of paved streets, com- plete with sidewalks. White way lighting is maintained on main street, and adequate lighting is provided throughout the city.
