PREFACE

WASHINGTON, N. C. Preface

The Original Washington Founded in 1776.

Washington, the county seat of Beaufort County, is located at the junction of the Pamlico and Tar Rivers, 40 miles from Pamlico Sound and 100 miles from the Atlantic seacoast, on Ocean Highway (U. S. No. 17 --- Maine to Florida); U. S. No. 264-East and West, and N. C. Highways Nos. 33, 91, 92, and 99. Directory census 1948, 10,920.

HISTORY

The settlement out of which Washington grew dates back to 1771 and on November 30, 1771, James Bonner, founder of the town, presented a bill to Congress held at Hillsboro for having a town established on his plantation. This town was called the "Forks of Tar River". In 1776, the town was changed to Washington, the first in the country to bear the name of our able Commander of the Continental Army and first presi- dent, George Washington.

Sixteen miles below Washington on U. S. Highway No. 264 is located the town of Bath, the first capital and oldest town in North Carolina. Originally the Indian town of Pampticough, it was settled by white men about 1690 and incorporated in 1705. St. Thomas Episcopal Church, the oldest church in the state, was built there in 1734 with brick brought from England, and contains many ancient relics given by the royalty of England. This Church and many other interesting historical land- marks are frequented by thousands of tourists each year.

A few miles from Washington is located the Dutch settlement of Terra Ceia. From this area, large quantities cf bulbs and blooming tulips are shipped to all parts of the country.

CLIMATE

With an elevation of 15 feet and a mean annual temperature of 64 degrees, Washington enjoys a pleasant year-round climate with a con- stant and pleasant river breeze in summer.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Adequate facilities are furnished tourists and the traveling public by two hotels and three tourist homes.

INDUSTRIES

The principal agricultural products in Beaufort County are tobacco, with our three modern warehouses having sold 13,984,000 pounds of tobacco in 1947, cotton, corn, soy beans, peanuts, and potatoes. This county leads the State in the production of Irish potatoes. At Aurora, 30 miles Southeast, is located the largest potato market in North Caro- lina. Among our industries are fertilizer plants, lumber mills, flour and grain mills, pickle plant, ice plant, ice cream plant and iron foundry.
