Independent and Progressive
Nelsons' Baldwin Directory Company, Inc., publishers of this city directory and the world's largest independent publishers of city di- rectories, is in no way connected with any national association or di- rectory "trust". Its policies are laid down with a view to serving the individual directory subscriber and the general public. It is a progressive company, constantly on the alert to improve its service.
The ABCD type of city directory was originated by the Baldwin Directory Company, Inc. While many publishers have been content to rest on their laurels, issuing the same type of directory used 30 years ago, the Baldwin organization has led the way to the produc- tion of a modern city directory to meet modern selling and credit conditions.
Newspapers, chambers of commerce, merchants' associations and individual business concerns are invited to write for particulars con- cerning this type of directory service. In the future, as in the past, Baldwin directories will stand for the highest ideals in public service.

A numerical telephone directory will be found in the back of the directory listing each telephone according to number.
The classified business directory lists each firm according to line of business.
The numerical street directory lists each street alphabetically and each house according to number, with the street intersections as they appear. After each house- holder's name will be found his telephone number. In case he has no telephone the nearest telephone may be found. The H denotes householders who own the house in which they live. By using the street guide as a mailing list, a thorough coverage of the city will be obtained without any duplication of names.
The buyers' guide carries the printed messages of the city's leading business and professional firms arranged alphabetically according to classifications.
This directory shows the approximate population of the city and environs at the present time.

INTRODUCTION
Nelsons' Baldwin Directory Company, Inc., publishers of your ci directory, takes pleasure in presenting the 1951 edition to the gener public. A large force of trained enumerators and solicitors worked di gently in the preparation of this volume and we are confident that th result is an authentic and useful city directory.
We have faith in the continued growth of your city and we believ that our directory will take its place as one of the vital instruments fo the advancement of your community. Subsequent editions will be issue promptly and regularly.
This volume is an example of the ABCD type of city directory a originated and developed by the Baldwin Directory Company, Inc. I the modern business world with its greatly changed sales and credit sy tems, the old type of directory has become completely obsolete. In adap ing the directory to modern conditions the Baldwin organization is th pioneer. The excellent city directory which your city now has is th result of the progressive spirit of this company and its accurate inte pretation of modern business requirements.
FIVE DIVISIONS OF THE BOOK
The principal parts of Nelsons' Baldwin Directory are as follows:
1. The Buyers' Guide and Civic Section is made up of the adve tisements of the leading business firms of the city, announcements churches, clubs, lodges, associations and schools, and professional card of public-spirited lawyers, physicians and dentists. The display space have been carefully grouped and indexed under headings which are de scriptive of the business engaged in by each firm. The Buyers' Guid when properly arranged and distributed, is of tremendous value in th building of business in the community.
2. The Resident Directory contains most of the data concerning th individual. The wife's name is given in parenthesis, and the number dependents under 16 is shown as well as the ownership of homes. Thi is followed by position, place of employment and home address.
INTRODUCTION
3. The Householders' Directory contains a complete directory of streets and avenues, properly located, gives the names of all householders arranged as they come upon the streets and avenues, indicates ownership of property.
4. The Business Directory and List of Nationally Advertised Brands contains the names of all business firms, professional people and non- profit organizations, properly classified. In this division are also listed the name of nationally advertised brands of merchandise, with the name of the local agents or distributors.
5. The Numerical Telephone Directory contains telephone numbers arranged in numerical sequence.
SPECIAL ABCD FEATURES
L
The following valuable information which appears in the ABCD type of directory is not to be found in the old-style city directory :
Number of dependents under sixteen;
Designation of home ownership;
Nationally Advertised Brands;
Numerical Telephone Directory ;
Telephone Numbers on Street Guide.
In addition to these valuable features, the ABCD type of directory is more conservatively styled, printed on better paper and more beauti- fully bound, arranged for more convenient use and contains a much more complete civic section. Directory stands are maintained in the business district for the use of the general public.
THE HOUSEHOLDERS' SUPPLEMENT
After including every conceivable feature which would tend to make the directory as useful and attractive as possible, the originators of the ABCD type of directory made one more bold stroke-they established a guaranteed HOME circulation for advertising matter by issuing the Householders' Supplement and delivering it to the homes of the commu- nity. Every advertisement which appears in a Baldwin Directory also appears in the Householders' Supplement, making the Baldwin Directory "America's greatest dollar-for-dollar advertising medium" today.

SALISBURY NORTH CAROLINA
"Where Location Pays An Extra Dividend"
Located 42 miles NE of Charlotte and 37 SW of Winston-Salem, on U. S. Highways 29, 52, and 70, SALISBURY is one of the finest medium- size cities in the South's Number One State, North Carolina.
Serving Rowan County's 75,410 people as county seat, Salisbury is one of a tri-cities with adjacent and contiguous population. The 1950 Census gives Salisbury a count of 20,102, while next door Spencer has an official count of 3,226 and East Spencer 2,451, according to the Federal Census.
Recent studies of the thirty-mile radius shows a population of 310,040 within our primary and secondary markets. For the same radius, it is estimated there are 62,000 school-age children, excluding colleges, (1950).
Retail sales in the Salisbury primary market are estimated at $55,- 000,000 (1950).
New construction includes a 1,128-bed Veteran's Administration Hospital now being erected at an estimated finished cost of $21,000,000; a $1,000,000 addition to the Rowan Memorial Hospital; about $2,000,000 in new churches and additions to same; a $100,000 new community li- brary ; $2,500,000 in school expansion programs ; a pending $300,000 nylon throwing plant; a new asphalt processing plant; a new plant fusing clay and coke in a radically new process; a new clay products plant making glazed tile, etc .; a $100,000 home-owned super market, completely air- conditioned and electrically heated (one of the South's most modern retail outlets) ; an additional chain super market to be built at reported cost of $85,000; a pending $1,500,000 180-unit apartment project for colored and white, and other progressive notes too numerous to list here. Salisbury is now moving at a fast pace. The city is improving its facilities and util- ities, managing its finances wisely, and already shows marked improve- ment in several directions.
HISTORY
Salisbury and Rowan County share in the earliest history of this progressive state and it is a history that the descendants of the earliest
10
SALISBURY
settlers and the people of today may well be proud to tell the world. The County was first settled in 1720 by Protestants from Moravia and a few years later, Scotch and Irish migrated here from their mother country. These were later followed in 1745 by a steady flow of Germans.
The County of Rowan was established at the session of the general assembly of the province of North Carolina on March 27, 1753. Thirty counties in Western North Carolina were later formed from Rowan Coun- ty. The first Court-the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions-met in Rowan in 1753, the same year of the organization of the county. The first court house was erected in 1756 and old records dating back as far as 1750 are still in file in the office of the register of deeds. The deed for Salis- bury Township was granted February 11, 1755, and it is a point of in- terest to note that as early as 1757 Salisbury boasted of traffic laws.
Salisbury and Rowan County were especially active during the Revolutionary War and in 1781 Lord Cornwallis made temporary head- quarters here. General Nathaniel Greene occupied Salisbury immediately before the arrival of Cornwallis' army. In the spring of 1791 George Washington visited Salisbury.
Near Salisbury today stands the remains of one of the South's most outstanding relics-"The Old Stone House"-a large building con- structed of native granite, built somewhat in the style of a fort, and oc- cupied by Michael Braun, the forerunner of many of the Browns in the city today.
A national cemetery is located in Salisbury in which Federal sol- diers held prisoners by the Confederacy here, Spanish American War veterans and World War veterans are buried.
"Boone's Cave," where the pioneer Daniel Boone sought refuge from the Indians, is located north of the city near the Yadkin River and "Old Trading Ford" on the Yadkin River, established before the Declara- tion of Independence, is also north of the city.
West of Salisbury, in the graveyard of the Old Third Creek Pres- byterian Church, is the modest grave of Peter Stuart Ney, well-known school teacher who came to this country from France and is believed by many to be Marshal Ney, Napoleon's "right hand" man. He was supposed to have been executed for treason to Louis XVII of France, but many be- lieve he escaped through connivance with the firing squad and then came to this country, taking up residence in North Carolina.
Andrew Jackson, at one time President of the United States, studied law in this city.
11
. NORTH CAROLINA
The mother of James K. Polk, eleventh President of the United States, was born and reared in Rowan County.
Mrs. Frances Christine Tiernan-Christian Reid, a writer of na- tional reputation-was a native of Salisbury. She was author of the volume "The Land of the Sky," from which Western North Carolina derives the name "Land of the Sky."
GOVERNMENT
Since 1927 the city has operated under a City Council-Manager form of government. The Council is composed of five members elected at large. The Council elects a mayor from its own membership and appoints the City Manager, who is the administrative head of the city.
Salisbury has a municipal water system ample to supply pure water to care for the city's needs; a modern sewer system and disposal plant; efficient police department with every modern facility for the de- tection and prevention of crime.
The fire department has long been a source of pride to the city and through its efficiency has compiled throughout the past number of years an enviable record.
Salisbury and Rowan County has a well-organized health depart- ment, ranking among the best in the South.
INDUSTRIAL
The fact that Salisbury is a manufacturing community of import- ance is evidenced by the presence of more than 90 diversified industries located here, manufacturing a very wide variety of products and giving employment to approximately 12,600 employees with a total annual pay- roll of approximately $10,900,000.
Salisbury businesses have a highly diversified industrial structure. Soaps, combed yarns, cotton battings, shirting, furniture, wash cloths, rubber rolls, hosiery, rubber hose, rubber printing plates, lumber and millwork, florists' supplies, packing plant products, flour and feeds, pav- ing blocks, building ceramics, refrigeration equipment, beverage syrups, proprietary medicines, bakery products, castings and machine durable goods, printing and publishing, building and monumental granites, cotton and rayon finishing, and many other products and types of business help to make a rich industrial and commercial community.
Balfour Pink Granite, recognized as the hardest granite obtainable,
12
SALISBURY
is said to be quarried exclusively near Salisbury and has been used in the construction of monuments and buildings throughout the world.
Salisbury is located at the center of the immense system of the Duke Power Company (including power dams and steam plants), which provides practically an unlimited source of power at exceptionally low rates. Anticipating possible demands for increased power in this area, an expansion program is underway increasing the capacity of the Buck plant in Rowan County to 190,000 K. W.
