INTRODUCTION
Nelsons' Directory Compony, Inc., publishers of your city directory, tokes pleasure in presenting the 1956 edition to the general public. A large force of trained enumerators and solicitors worked diligently in the preparation of this volume and we are confident that the result is on authentic and useful city directory.
We have faith in the continued growth of your city and we believe that our directory will take its place as one of the vital instruments for the advance- ment of your community. Subsequent editions will be issued promptly and regularly.
This volume is on exomple of the LARN type of city directory as originated and developed by the Nelsons' Directory Company, Inc. In the modern busi- ness world with its greatly changed sales and credit systems, the old type of directory has become completely obsolete. In adopting the directory to modern conditions the Nelson orgonizotion is the pioneer. The excellent city directory which your city now has is the result of the progressive spirit of this company and its accurate interpretotion of modern business requirements.
SIX DIVISIONS OF THE BOOK
The principol ports of the Nelsons' Directory are os follows:
1. The Buyer's Guide and Civic Section is made up of the advertisements of the leading business firms of the city, onnouncements of churches, clubs, lodges, associations and schools, and professionol cards of public-spirited lawyers, physicians and dentists. The display spoces have been corefully grouped and indexed under headings which are descriptive of the business engaged in by each firm. The Buyer's Guide, when properly arronged and distributed, is of tremendous value in the building of business in the community.
2. The Resident Directory contains most of the data concerning the indiv- idual. The wife's name is given in porenthesis, ond the number of dependents under 16 is shown as well os the ownership of homes. This is followed by posi- tion, place of employment ond home oddress.
3. The Householders' Directory contains a complete directory of streets and avenues, properly located, gives the nomes of oll householders arranged as they come upon the streets and avenues, indicates ownership of property.
4. The Business Directory and List of Nationally Advertised Brands contains the names of all business firms, professional people and non-profit organizations, properly classified. In this division are also listed the names of nationally ad- vertised brands of merchandise, with the name of the local agents or distributors.
INTRODUCTION
5. The Numerical Telephone Directory contains telephone numbers ar- ranged in numerical sequence.
6. Rural Route Directory contains names of all rural residents.
SPECIAL LARN FEATURES
The following valuable information which appears in the LARN type of directory is not to be found in the old-style city directory:
Number of dependents under sixteen;
Designation of home ownership;
Nationally Advertised Brands;
Numerical Telephone Directory;
Telephone Numbers on Street Guide.
Rural Route Directory
In addition to these valuable features, the LARN type of directory is more conservatively styled, printed on better paper and more beautifully bound, ar- ranged for more convenient use and contains a much more complete civic section.
THE HOUSEHOLDERS' SUPPLEMENT
After including every conceivable feature which would tend to make the directory as useful and attractive as possible, the originators of the LARN type of directory made one more bold stroke-they established a guaranteed HOME circulation for advertising matter by issuing the Householders' Supplement and delivering it to the homes of the community. Every advertisement which appears in Nelsons' Directory also appears in the Householder's Supplement, making the Nelsons' Directory "America's greatest dollar-for-dollar advertising medium" today.

LUMBERTON NORTH CAROLINA
Lumberton was created by an act of the North Carolina General Assembly on November 3, 1788, and was subsequently incorporated in 1852. The founder was General John Willis, who measured off a 170-acre tract of land from his 11,776-acre plantation holding. He assigned Jacob Rhodes, a surveyor, to lay out the town on the basis of a plat that was filed under date of May 5, 1787, along with a plan for the conduct of a lottery to dispose of the town lots.
General Willis had been a soldier in the American Revolution, and he and his brother-in-law, Colonel Thomas Robeson, also of Rev- olution fame, were responsible for the creation of Robeson County out of lands belonging to Bladen County. As a member of the gen- eral assembly and because of his work on behalf of the new county, the actual organization of the county and the town was a joint oper- ation and Robeson County was named for Colonel Robeson.
Historians are not agreed as to the origin of the name of the town, nor are they in agreement as to the authenticity of the story that the original name of the river was "The Lumbee." There is some evidence to the effect that Lumberton was so named because it was an important "lumber town" at the time it was founded, and there is some evidence to prove that the Indians called the present Lumber River by the euphonious name "The Lumbee." Students of Indian language and lore are authority for the tradition that "ee" in the In- dian tongue is the equivalent of the English word "river." By circuit- ous reasoning, there are some who contend that the Indians named
the river and that Lumberton acquired its name from the river, and not because of the fact it was a lumber center.
The original 170-acre tract on which Lumberton was founded was said to have been entirely covered by trees, and that many large trees had to be cut down to make way for the block that was set aside for a courthouse and for business houses and residences. Lots were laid off in half-acre size, with streets surveyed in four direc- tions and space designated for a commons and public square. The lottery was scheduled for August 14, 1788, and when tickets calling for town lots were not presented, the town managers were directed to rent out the lots for the best prices obtainable. The affairs of the lottery were conducted by five men named by the new court of Robe- son County as trustees of the town lands.
Lumberton's first business houses were erected along the Lumber River waterfront, then known as "the wharf," and up and down the present Elm Street, and the three or four courthouses that have served Robeson County have been located on the original block set aside for that purpose by General Willis. Gradually, the business area has spread out from the first center, but during Lumberton's existence the bulk of the town's business has been transacted in areas lying close to the courthouse.
Little is known of the first sixty years of Lumberton's existence, but when the incorporated Town of Lumberton came into being in 1852 the population within its borders ran from 200 to 300 persons. Turpentine, timber and general naval stores products were the chief sources of industry.
At the turn of the century there were no paved streets in Lum- berton, while today there are miles of paved streets and sidwalks. Less than two generations ago there was no sanitary system for Lum- berton, while today there are many miles of sewage, storm sewage and water lines, and additional lines are now being laid under an
enlargement program. Many citizens well remember when there was no telephone system in the city, but today Lumberton is the cen- ter for telephone service over a wide area. Where there were fewer than a dozen stores a hundred years ago there are now more than 250 successful retail establishments. The latest government and busi- ness estimates report that Lumberton does a greater volume of retail business than any other town in North Carolina of similar population total.
During its 100 years as an incorporated town Lumberton has made tremendous strides, the greatest growth being within the past twenty years. Now a city of approximately 20,000 people, count- ing the immediate environs, Lumberton is recognized as the leading city of Southeastern North Carolina. Lumberton is served by two railroads - the Seaboard Air Line and the Virginia and Carolina Southern, an affiliate of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Company. in Lumberton which are used in the processing of the crop grown municipal airport. It is served by US 301 Highway and US 74 High- way and a number of state highways, and is the chief southeastern terminal for Miller Motor Express and the Queen City Coach Company.
For many years Lumberton was noted for its fine cotton market, and expansion of the local tobacco market. For the past ten years, or more, the Lumberton Market has sold from thirty to forty-five mil- but the greatest advance in the agricultural field has been the growth " lion pounds each year. There are three large tobacco redrying plants in Lumberton which are used in the processing of the crop grown and marketed in the area. Within the past few years Lumberton has moved up from sixteenth to tenth place in the list of more than eighty flue-cured tobacco markets of the South. The Lumberton Market is recognized as one of the most stable markets in the entire belt.
While Lumberton's economic background is largely agricultural there is sufficient industry to insure a balance. Products from the thousands of acres of rich lands in Robeson and adjoining counties
find a ready and high market in Lumberton, but at the same time the business and professional interests of Lumberton also enjoy the fruits of industrial payrolls.
Lumberton has two banks with combined resources of more than $37,000,000; two hotels, one 100-room and one 60-room; several reg- istered tourist homes and motor courts, an excellent school system, and churches of Catholic, Jewish, and Protestant denominations. There are two newspapers, one a daily and the other a weekly; two full- time radio stations, a beautiful country club, an eighteen-hole grass green golf course, several motion picture theatres, and a city bus system. The municipality operates a public recreation system with full-time trained supervisors.
A full-time, active and aggressive chamber of commerce and ( merchants association look after the city's business interests. Assist- ing in civic work are the following organizations: Business and Pro- fessional Women's Club, Junior Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis, Lions, and Rotary. Both the city and county enjoy managerial types of gov- ernment. Located at Lumberton is the Robeson County Memorial Hos- pital, which is the center of medical facilities for Southeastern North Carolina. This hospital, now equipped with 440 beds, has a wing under construction to house 60 additional beds?10
The climate is generally mild with a mean temperature of 63.3 degrees. The city is 125 feet above sea-level and has an average annual rainfall of 48 inches.
Community leaders predict a bright future for Lumberton. Many say that the next decade will far surpass expectations for the city is moving forward as an agricultural market, a trading center, and as a city of stable industries.
