Independent and Progressive

Baldwin Directory Company, Inc., publisher of this city directory and the world's largest independent publisher of city directories, is in no way connected with any national association, combination or directory "trust". Its policies are laid down with a view to serving the indivi- dual directory subscriber and the general public. It is a progressive company, constantly on the alert to improve its service.

The ABCD type of city directory was originated by the Baldwin, Directory Company, Inc. While many publishers have been content to rest on their laurels, issuing the same type of directory used thirty years ago, the Baldwin organization has led the way to the production of a modern city directory to meet modern selling and credit conditions.

Newspapers, chambers of commerce, merchants' associations and in- dividual business concerns are invited to write for particulars concern- ing this type of directory service. In the future, as in the past, Bald- win directories will stand for the highest ideals in public service.

INTRODUCTION

Baldwin Directory Company, Inc., publishers of your city direc- tory, takes pleasure in presenting the 1940 edition to the general pub- lic. A large force of trained enumerators and solicitors worked dili- gently u the preparation of this volume and we are confident that the result is an authentic and useful city directory.

We have faith in the continued growth of your city and we be- lieve that our directory will take its place as one of the vital instru- ments for the advancement of your community. Subsequent editions will be issued promptly and regularly.

This volume is an example of the ABCD type of city directory as originated and developed by the Baldwin Directory Company, Inc. In the modern business world with its greatly changed sales and credit systems, the old type of directory has become completely obsolete. In adapting the directory to modern conditions the Baldwin organization is the pioneer. The excellent city directory which your city now has is the result of the progressive spirit of this company and its accurate interpretation of modern business requirements.

SEVEN DIVISIONS OF THE BOOK

The principal parts of the Baldwin Directory are as follows:

1. The Miscellaneous Directory, contains a great deal of useful information concerning the national, state and local governments. In it are listed the names of members of congress and the state legisla- ture, city and county officials.

2. The Buyers' Guide and Civic Section is made up of the ad- vertisements of the leading business firms of the city, announcements of churches, clubs, lodges, associations and schools, and professional cards of public-spirited lawyers, physicians and dentists. The display spaces have been carefully grouped and indexed under headings which are descriptive of the business engaged in by each firm. The Buyer's Guide, when properly arranged and distributed, is of tremendous value in the building of business in the community.

3. The Resident Directory contains most of the data concerning the individual. The wife's name is given in parenthesis, and the number of dependents under 16 is shown as well as the ownership of homes. This is followed by position, place of employment and home address.

4. The Householders' Directory contains a complete directory of streets and avenues, properly located, gives the names of all house- holders arranged as they come upon the streets and avenues, indicates ownership of property.

5. The Business Directory and List of Nationally Advertised Brands contains the names of all business firms, professional people and non-profit organizations, properly classified. In this division are also listed the names of nationally advertised brands of merchandise, with the name of the local agents or distributors.

6. The Numerical Telephone Directory contains telephone num- bers arranged in numerical sequence.

SPECIAL ABCD FEATURES

The following valuable information which appears in the ABCD type of directory is not to be found in the old-style city directory :

Number of dependents under sixteen;

Designation of home ownership;

Nationally Advertised Brands.

Numerical Telephone Directory;

Telephone Numbers on Street Guide;

In addition to these valuable features, the ABCD type of directory is more conservatively styled, printed on better paper and more beau- tifully bound, arranged for more convenient use and contains a much more complete civic section. Directory stands are maintained in the business district for the use of the general public.

THE HOUSEHOLDERS' SUPPLEMENT

After including every conceivable feature which would tend to make the directory as useful and attractive as possible, the origina- tors of the ABCD type of directory made one more bold stroke-they established a guaranteed home circulation for advertising matter by issuing the Householders' Supplement and delivering it to the homes of the community. Every advertisement which appears in a Baldwin Directory also appears in the Householders' Supplement, making the Baldwin Directory "America's greatest dollar-for-dollar advertising medium" today.

BALDWIN DIRECTORY CO., INC.

NEW BERN

NORTH CAROLINA By HELEN HAWK Chamber of Commerce Secretary

,

New Bern, County seat of Craven County, has a popula- tion with more than 100,000 in Trade Area.

Settled in 1710 by Swiss and German Colonists and named for Berne, Switzerland, New Bern is the second oldest town in North Carolina. Over 100 historic spots may be easily reached in and around the City. Here was established the first printing press in the province, the first book and news- paper publication, the first incorporated school, and later the first free school for white children in the state.

The magnificent hand-carving to be found here is some of the handsomest in the Country. Two of the leading American architects wrote of New Bern, "The most prolific in good architecture of all the little cities of the South." Nina Wilcox Putnam described the town as "A Minature Charleston."

New Bern is situated at the confluence of the Neuse and Trent Rivers, and is the main town in the central part of Eastern North Carolina. Surrounded by five counties rich in farming and timber producing areas, it has splendid railroads, bus service and water transportation facilities, available mar- kets, industrial potentialities.

Churches of all denominations, modern schools and Civic Organizations are the best for a town of its size. The Coast Guard maintains a Cutter here with a personnel of 35 men, River Beaches and picnic areas are maintained for the general public by the Croatan National Forest in Craven, Jones and Carteret Counties. Parks and playgrounds are open within the city limits under trained instructors. Two public libraries are maintained.

D

Besides two rivers, the Neuse and Trent, New Bern is only 35 miles from the Atlantic Ocean where a $2,000,000 modern port development is located, at Morehead City, with a channel depth of 35 ft.

Midway between New York and Florida, and only 75 miles from the Gulf Stream the climate is mild and heathful. Aver- age temeprature is 62 degrees, with Summer average of 79 degrees. The normal annual rainfall is about 60 inches and the town is 18 feet above sea level. Prevailing wind is from the Southwest-from the Atlantic Ocean.

Almost all of the citizens are native-born American, with high Anglo-Saxon percentage.

Eastern North Carolina is known for its excellent hunting. Good accomodations can be found in and near New Bern, for wild turkey hunting, duck, dove, squirrel, rabbit, deer and bear.

The Neuse and Trent Rivers and various tributaries af- ford fine freshwater fishing which include striped bass, black bass, perch and many other species, such as croakers, trout and silver perch. Crabs are plentiful in both rivers.

Natural resources permit wide expansion of industrial life here. Ideal industrial sites, conveniently located for rail- road facilities, water transportation, paved highways, power connections'and local residences are available for almost any type of business. Skilled as well as unskilled laborers are numerous through the five county section surrounding New Bern.

Living conditions here have long been regarded excellent. The people are hospitable and friendly. New Bern boasts cultural and recreational advantages of many larger cities, all of which is made more attractive by its scenic advantages.

For information write Chamber of Commerce, New Bern, North Carolina.
