WORLD'S
INDEPENDENT AND PROGRESSIVE
Mullin-Kille Company (Associate of Baldwin ConSurvey Company) publisher of this directory and world's largest independent publisher of city directories, is in no way connected with any national association, combination or directory "trust." Its policies are laid down with a view to serving the individual directory subscriber and the general public. It is a progressive company, constantly on the alert to improve its service.
The ABCD type of ConSurvey directory was originated by Robert Morton Baldwin and Heber Page. While many publishers have been content to rest on their laurels, issuing the same type directory used fifty years ago, the Mullin-Kille and Baldwin or- ganizations have led the way to the production of an up-to-date ConSurvey directory to meet modern selling and credit conditions.
Newspapers, chambers of commerce, merchants' associations and individual business concerns are invited to write for particulars concerning this type directory service. In the future, as in the past, Mullin-Kille and Baldwin ConSurvey directories will stand for the highest ideals in public service.
ROBERT MORTON BALDWIN
The information herein contain- ed was taken by trained enumer- ators in a house-to-house canvass of the city and adjacent territory and checked with material sup- plied by employers. . .. Preface .. New Bern-Today
A progressive and growing modern city, with outstanding historical traditions, New Bern has unsurpassed natural re- sources of much importance to agricul- turists, business opportunities of great value to industrialists, and distinctive cultural charms of marked appeal to visitors that are being materially capital- ized upon today to give it a niche higher than ever before attained in its long hon- ored career of 244 years.
As County Seat of Craven County, New Bern draws many patrons from the county and neighboring counties. Its population was 11,815 by official count in 1940; by 1950 it had increased 33.6 per cent to 15,784; with about 18,000 estimated at present. The county showed a 55.5 per cent increase during the dec- ade to 48,681. About 200,000 reside in the trade territory.
NEW BERN POST OFFICE
In the heart of Eastern North Carolina, on two wide rivers, at the center of the coastal area of the United States, the city is the hub of one of the most fertile farm regions of the entire country, noted for its mild climate, long growing sea- sons, up-to-date farming methods, live- stock and many diversified crops.
Only 35 miles from the Atlantic Ocean, 35 degrees latitude and 77 longitude, about 18 feet above sea level, the city is in the midst of a vast amphitheatre of protected seaways, rimmed with coastal resorts.
Effective buying income for the city is estimated at $30,000,000 and for the trade territory at $100,000,000. The 550 retail establishments in the city had 1952 pay- rolls of $1,500,000 and sales of $24,000- 000. Annual payrolls for civilian and mili- tary personnel at the Marine Air Station at Cherry Point approximated $31,337,000 in 1952. County retail sales come to over $30,000,000.
Basic raw materials of many different kinds permit wide expansion of industrial life. Forest lands on 158,000 acres rank among the most productive in the South.
1954 New Bern City Directory

Woods teem with game, waters with sea- food. Agriculture, lumbering, commercial fishing and varied manufacturing con. stitute major pursuits.
Current industrial establishments in- clude factories for making men's trousers, ladies' dresses, and handmade ties, a small-boat manufactory, three boat workers and repair yards, six lumber mills, three plywood factories, two me al plants, four machine foundries, cement block plant, tobacco proces ing factory, an awning and tent manufacturing company and a sail loft for making boat sails, cot- ton seed mill, fertilizer plants, livestock market, curb market, canning plant, two feed mills, grain elevator, meat packing plant, frozen food locker, pickle plan:, chicken hatchery, two milk pasteurization plants, ice cream factory, five bottling plants, and seven patent medicine firms. Packaged liquors are sold at three liquor stores in the county.
1ST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
Hundreds of new homes have been built, with suburban residential sections expanding rapidly. There are two new low-rent housing projects, one for white residents, the other for colored.
Since July 1, 1947, New Bern has been under the City Manager form of govern- ment, with a Mayor and City Manager, and one Alderman from each of the five wards. The Chief of Police and Tax Col- lector are appointed by the Board of Al- dermen. Craven County is governed by a Board of five Commissioners represent- ing various parts of the county, with two from New Bern.
Property in the county was valued for tax purposes in 1953 at $33,809,599, of which $15,566,394 was in New Bern.
The Norfolk Southern, Atlantic Coast Line and Atlantic and East Carolina Railroads operate in all directions.
The Seashore Transportation Company operates many buses to numerous points, including express service to New York and Greensboro. This company also owns and operates the City Transit Company, which has regular bus routes on frequent schedules.
There are a number of motor freight and express lines, as well as railway ex- press. The section has excellent paved highways. Routes 17, 70 and 55 pass through New Bern.
Simmons-Nott Airport is owned by the city and county, and operated by the city for six daily flights by National Airlines and four by Piedmont Airlines.
Focal point of diversified enterprises, the town is regional headquarters for many firms; and headquarters for a State Forestry Division; the Croatan National Forest in Jones, Carteret and Craven Counties; State Highway and Public Works Commission district with its local prison camp and farm; State Highway Patrol, with its district office on Route 17; a sectional office of the United States Employment Service; and district office of the Postal Inspector. The Third Dis- trict Congressman resides in New Bern.
Sudan Shrine Temple has its home here, with members as far west as Dur- ham. A $150,000 Shrine Auditorium has been erected next to the Shrine Home, and is available for public programs. A $300,000 Temple is used for offices and semi-annual reunions of Scottish Rite Masons. Meetings are also held here fre- quently by York Rite Masons and af- filiated bodies.
Located here are St. Luke's Hospital, Kafer Memorial Hospital, Good Shepherd for Negroes, and the County Hospital- Home. The City-County Health Depart- ment has a modern Health Center.
Numerous churches are in and around New Bern, and there are many religious, benevolent, patriotic and civic organiza- tions. The American Red Cross is active, and operates a housing bureau.
The Sun-Journal publishes two editions of its daily newspaper. There are two local Radio Stations, WHIT and WOOW, and broadcasting studios are maintained here by WMBL, of Morehead City and Beaufort.
Living conditions are regarded as ex- cellent, not only because of the scenic and health location and the charm of streets and homes but especially because of the friendly spirit. Foreignborn form only .5 per cent of the population. The city has a unique atmosphere of historical background blended with modern prog- ress and Southern hospitality.
