INDEPENDENT AND PROGRESSIVE

Mullin-Kille (associate of Baldwin ConSurvey Company) publisher of this directory and world's largest independent publisher of city directories, is in no way connected with any national association, combination or directory "trust." Its policies are laid down with a view to serving the individual directory subscriber and the general public. It is a progressive com- pany, constantly on the alert to improve its service.

The ABCD type of ConSurvey directory was originated by Robert Morton Baldwin and Heber Page. While many publishers have been content to rest on their laurels, issuing the same type directory used fifty years ago, the Mullin-Kille and Baldwin organizations have led the way to the production of an up-to-date ConSurvey directory to meet modern selling and credit conditions.

Newspapers, chambers of commerce, merchants' associations and individual business con- cerns are invited to write for particulars concerning this type directory service. In the fu- ture, as in the past, Mullin-Kille and Baldwin ConSurvey directories will stand for the high- est ideals in public service.

ROBERT MORTON BALDWIN

The information herein contained was taken by trained enumerators in a house-to-house canvass of the city and adjacent territory and checked with material supplied by employers. The publishers offer it as the most reliable information available but do not assume any responsibility for errors.

Preface NEW BERN, NORTH CAROLINA

By New Bern Chamber of Commerce

CENTER OF HISTORY - PIVOT OF PROGRESS

This is the land where much of our history had its beginning. centered about New Bern, North Carolina's second oldest town, Colonial Center for business, culture, and political activity, the site of many of our "firsts". It is also a land of jet planes, trim modern boats, great modern highways and buildings - a land where the pulse of Eastern North Carolina's great new era of development is strongly evident.

New Bern looks two ways, a fact which accounts for the stability and sound character of progress which is evident here. Important strides have been made in the development of the area's mineral, timber and agricultural resources. Diversification in agriculture and industry have dominated this growth. Yet, while New Bern's aggress- ive citizens push on toward greater progress in business, agriculture and industry, they have kept a firm grip on the cherished traditions of their rich history, pre- serving the best of the past for themselves, their descendents, and for welcomed visitors who come here from throughout the world.

Tryon Palace, nearing completion, once called "The most beautiful building in Colonial America" was built by Royal Governor Tryon in pre-Revolutionary days, and later became the first capitol building for the State of North Carolina. Three Governors were inaugurated and lived there. The Palace is being restored at a cost of several millions of dollars and is expected to become one of America's historical showplaces. It will be opened to the public by 1959.

New Bern is a sight-seer's paradise. Here are over 100 homes a century or more in age, many of which are open to visitors during the annual Garden Club Pilgrimage. The John Wright Stanley home, now a free library, with museum, is open daily, The Fireman's Museum (awarded the only prize by the National Historical Society for the preservation of antiquities in 1957) Attmore-Oliver House, William Gaston House, Masonic Temples and nearby Fort Macon add points of interest.

Few cities anywhere afford more complete transportation than New Bern. By air, both National and Piedmont Airlines maintain scheduled flights from Simmons- Nott Airport, giving New Bern "the best, most frequent air service of any small city in the country".

Three railroads - Norfolk-Southern, Atlantic Coast Line and Southern serve the area. Three important highways, U.S. 17, U.S. 70 and N.C. 55, intersect here. The home office for Seashore Transportation Company is here and numerous Motor Freight Lines have offices and warehouses.

Water commerce provides freight advan ages enjoyed by few cities. New Bern is served by both the Neuse and Trent Rivers, with a minimum 12 foot channel which connects directly with the Intra-Coastal Waterway and the North Carolina State deep- sea Port Terminal at Nearby Morehead City.

As county seat of Craven County, New Bern draws many patrons from the county and neighboring counties. Its population was 11,815 by official count in 1940, with 18,500 estimated at present. The county showed 31,298 in 1940 with 55,543 estimated at this time. More than 250,000 people reside in the trading area.

There are 69 manufacturing establishments employing 2600 workers who receive annual wages of more than $6,000,000. Annual payrolls for citizens and military personnel at the Marine Air Station at Cherry Point approximate $30,000,000. County retail sales were more than $50,578,014 in 1957.

New Bern's three banks (with branches in the county) and three Savings and Loan Associations with resources of more than $298,816,942 give this area a sound financial basis for expansion.

Current industrial establishments include factories for making men's trousers, ladies dresses, hand screened shirts and ties, one commercial boat manufacturer, two builders of pleasure craft, six lumber mills, three plywood factories, cement block plant, awning and tent manufacturing company, boat trailer plant, feed mills, grain elevator, fertilizer plants, livestock market, curb market, canning plant, meat packing plant, frozen foods locker, pickle plant, chicken hatchery, two milk pasteurization plants, ice cream factory, five bottling plants, patent medicine firms and printing firms.

Since July 1, 1947, New Bern has been under the City Manager form of govern- ment with a Mayor and City Manager, and one Alderman from each of five wards. The Chief of Police and Tax Collector are appointed by the Board of Alderman. Craven County is governed by a Board of five commissioners representing various parts of the county, with two from New Bern.

Property in the county was valued for tax purposes in 1957 at $39,823,067 of which $17,103,422 was in New Bern.

A $300,000 Temple is used for offices and semi-annual reunions of Scottich Rite Masons. Meetings are also held here frequently by New York Rite Masons and affiliated bodies.

Located here are St. Luke's Hospital, Eastern North Carolina Baptist Hospital, and Good Shepherd for Negroes and the County Hospital Home. The City-County Health Department has a modern Health Center.

Numerous Churches are in and around New Bern and there are many religious, benevolent, patriotic and civic organizations.

The Sun-Journal publishes two editions of its daily newspaper. There are two local radio stations, WHIT and WRNB. New Bern is in the process of completing Federal Communications Commission requirements for a Channel 12 Television Station. Also nearby, are two television stations serving the area with a primary signal, one NBC, the other CBS. Muzak offers a source of background music that is used by major companies throughout America.

Hundreds of new homes have been built with suburban residential sections expanding rapidly. There are two low-rent housing projects, one for white, the other for colored.

Recreation is unlimited, The broad, beautiful waters of the Neuse and Trent Rivers provide the perfect setting for boating, fishing, swimming, skiing and other water sports. In addition, North Carolina's popular beach resorts are but a short distance away. There is excellent hunting in season.

New Bern people love fun, and their recreation is varied: golf at the Country Club, riding, tennis and other outdoor sports may be enjoyed in the mild climate. There is a well organized year-around municipal recreation program, as well as lively social and civic life.

Excellent hotels, motels, restaurants and dining rooms, together with cordial hospitality is fast making New Bern into a convention and tourist center.

Seven Elementary and three High Schools, with exceptional faculties, give college preparatory courses plus Vocational-Trade and Technical Training. The school plants are modern in every respect and a constant building program has been under way for the past several years. The rural schools have modernized their plants in the past five years and are excellent in every respect. New Bern with 58% and Craven County with 43.27% of its graduates entering college rank among the highest in North Carolina.

New Bern Business College is located here where completed courses are taught in secretarial fields. The college operates both day and night classes with excellent instructors.

The world's largest Marine Air Base, Cherry Point with its thriving civilian settle- ment at fast growing Havelock, is in the eastern part of Craven County, greatly strengthening the economy of the entire area. Camp Lejeune, largest all-purpose Marine Ground base, is in nearby Onslow County.

New Bern wears its long honored career of 248 years well. Its tradition of hospital- ity and genuine friendliness is experienced by every visitor whether he comes as a tourist or a business man, whether as a casual visitor, or to make his home here, he will receive a warm genuine welcome to the "Land of Enchanting Waters".
