PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE

I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

THE AMERICAN'S CREED

I believe in the United States of America as a government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the con- sent of the governed; a democracy in a republic; a sovereign Nation of many sovereign States; a perfect Union, one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice, and humanity for which Ameri- can patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes.

I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it; to support its Constitution; to obey its laws; to respect its flag; and to defend it against all enemies.

(WILLIAM TYLER PAGE)

EX-PRESIDENT'S RESUME

Some accomplishments of the North Carolina Society of Colonial Dames of XVII Century during the past two years, 1955-'57:

The organization of three chapters-the Sir Richard Grenville, Dunn, N. C., the Governor Philip Ludwell, Marion, N. C., and the Lord Granville chapter, Oxford, N. C .. Mrs. Ralph Jordan was appointed organizing chapter president of Sanford, N. C. She has not completed the organization yet. With the Sir Walter Raleigh chapter, gives us almost half of our Society membership in chapters. We now have 127 active members, an increase of twenty-three members.

The N. C. Society gave $60.00 on the Building Fund in 1956 and in 1957 gave $256.76.

The Scholarship Fund was given $160.00 in 1956 and in 1957, $195.00.

The Sir Walter Raleigh Chapter of the N. C. Society placed a bronze marker on the Thomas Norcom House in Chowan County June 26, 1955.

On February 24, 1956 the Chapter placed a Replica of the Thomas Norcom House in the North Carolina Hall of History.

On September 23, 1956 a bronze tablet was unveiled at Merchants Hope Church, Virginia. This tablet was the gift of Miss Mattie Higgs, a member of the Sir Walter Raleigh Chapter, in the name of the Chapter.

Your State President was invited by Inglis Fletcher to be on the program of the N. C. Historical and Antiquity Society to give the history of the un- veiling of the Thomas Norcom Marker.

Mrs. John Kellenberger, a member, gave $25.00 to the Elizabethean Garden in the name of the North Carolina Society.

The beautiful North Carolina Society of Colonial Dames of XVII Century flag was purchased by the membership. The gift of a new U. S. and a N. C. flag was made by Mrs. Charles H. Stephenson, a member of the Sir Walter Raleigh Chapter. The State Registrar, Mrs. Carl McMurray, copied the State Roster on 3 x 5 filing cards.

Twenty-five members attended the National Convention in Richmond, Vir- ginia, in 1957.

The last project, the accomplishment of the 1955-57 regime, was the print- ing of this our first year book.

All of my officers and chairmen of committees served efficiently and well. To them and to our other members many thanks for their cooperation and interest.

It has been my great pleasure to serve you.

STELLA GARRETT MAXWELL (MRS. RAYMOND C.)
