On the streets running North and South, the blocks between Hillsboro- Newbern and Morgan are numbered from one upward ; be- tween Morgan and Hargett, in the one hundreds; between Hargett and Martin in the two hundreds; between Martin and Davie in the three hundreds; between Davie and Ca- barrus in the four hundreds ; between Cabarrus and Lenoir in the five hundreds; between Lenoir and South in the six hundreds; between South and Smithfield in the seven hun- dreds ; between Smithfield and limits in the eight hundreds; between Hillsboro-Newbern and Edenton, from one upward; between Edenton and Jones in the one hundreds ; between Jones and Lane in the two hundreds; between Lang and North in the three hundreds; between North and Johnson in the four hundreds; between Johnson-Polk and Peace in the five hundreds; between Peace and limits in the six hundreds.

The streets running East and West are: Hillsboro from the Capitol westwardly, and Newbern Avenue from the Capi- tol eastwardly ; and those running parallel with Hillsboro and Newbern Avenue on the North side are: 1st, Edenton ; 2d, Jones ; 3d, Lane ; 4th, North and Oakwood Avenue ; 5th, Johnson and Polk; 6th, Peace; 7th, Firwood Avenue (out- side city).


The streets running East and West, parallel with Hills- boro and Newbern on the South side are: Ist, Morgan ; 2d, Hargett ; 3d, Martin; 4th, Davie; 5th, Cabarrus ; 6th, Le- noir; 7th, South ; Sth, Smithfield-Hunter and Worth-Can- non ; 9th, Dodd, (from Jenkins to Wilmington), and MeKee, from Fayetteville to Manly.


Bledsoe Avenue runs from Wilmington Street (next South of Smithfield) eastwardly. Blount Street Alley, from Wil- mington, between South and Smithfield, eastwardly.


Linden Avenue and Elm Street run between East and Swain, Linden running between Jones and Oakwood Ave- nue, and Elm Street from Oakwood Avenue northwardly to the limits.


The centre of the Capitol is the starting point of all the numbers, and a house in any portion of the city is as many blocks distant from a line drawn through the centre of the Capitol as there are hundreds in its number. For example, to find 424 South Harrington : Starting from the Capitol, go to the fourth street West, and then four blocks ; to find 535 East Hargett, go to the second street South, and then five blocks.
