DIRECTORY,

AND

GENERAL ADVERTISER

FOR 1877-8.

Containing a General and Complete Business Directory of the City, as well as a Complete Post Office Directory of Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina.

COMPILED AND PUBLISHED BY

BENJ. R. SHERIFF.

FOR SALE BY P. HEINSBERGER, BOOKSELLER AND STATIONER. 39 & 41 MARKET ST., WILMINGTON, N. C.

Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1877, by Benj. R. Sheriff, in the Office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington, D. C.

PREFACE.

This, my second issue of the Wilmington City Directory, I trust will be found more full and complete than its predeces- sor. The increase in the number of names contained in the work clearly indicates that there has been a notable increase in the population of the city. The Directory contains 4860 names, which multiplied by four, the usual ratio, would give Wilmington a population of 19,440, an increase of 5974 over the United States Census of 1870, and an increase of 4,400 over the last estimate as calculated by the Directory.

Hoping that my work will give satisfaction to its patrons, returning my sincere thanks to all who have aided me by fur- nishing the necessary information, and trusting that my hum- ble efforts in the future may meet with the same liberal pat- ronage heretofore extended,

I am respectfully, etc., BENJ. R. SHERIFF,
