PREFACE.
We herewith present our 1905-6 volume of The Charlotte Directory to our patrons and Citizens generally.
This volume is an improvement over preceding works issued by us in Charlotte, and in saying this we feel that there is no more to say "for the Directory-using public of Charlotte are familiar with the class of work produced by us, and we are willing to abide by their verdict."
Charlotte is keeping well abreast of the times and ranks well up in front of cities of corresponding size in this country, and the new $200,000 Hotel now under construction will do much toward advertising Charlotte away from home, and besides will make the city a tourist stop point on the way to Florida in winter and on the return trip in the spring.
Charlotte as it is, is a beautiful city, with its handsome office build- ings, residences and churches, and will attract the tourist. There is one thing lacking, however, and that is modern paving. PAVE TRADE and TRYON Streets with vitrified brick and it will enhance the value of abutting property equally as much as the outlay, and besides it will im- prove the city generally. This improvement should be made AT ONCE before the completion of your Tourist Hotel.
Before closing the writer desires to call attention to the fact that the City Directory has been placed under the ban (along with other publications) as an advertising medium, by an association of Charlotte Business Men, (practically all of whom by the way are subscribers to the Directory). This was done, we believe, without actual intent to injure our publication, but was made necessary among other things. In this connection we desire to call attention to the fact that the Charlotte Directory (as published by us) would be forced to discontinue without the advertising department, for, as a matter of fact, the subscriptions pay but a fraction over one-half of the total expense of production.
We feel that the Charlotte Directory patrons are thoroughly satisfied with our service, and wish us to continue the publication, and we also feel, in justice to us, that the ban that was practically placed on its members patronizing the advertising department will be removed before the pub- lication of the next volume by the aforesaid association.
With thanks to the general public for courtesies shown our represen- tatives and our patrons for generous support we are respectfully yours,
THE WALSH DIRECTORY CO,
W. H. WALSH, Prest. & Treas.
