PREFACE.

CENSUS -

- 40,000

We herewith present our 1907 volume of The Charlotte Directory, to our patrons and citizens generally and publish a few facts as follows:

Charlotte has a location that is almost geographically perfect, being one-half way between Washington and Atlanta, the center of the Piedmont section of the Carolinas.

With climatic conditions moderate and delightful, conducive to good health and favorable for manufacturing, making possible a low cost of living and moderate wages acceptable.

Tributary to Charlotte is water power of at least 200,000 electrical horse power, available to the manufacturer at less than two-thirds of what steam power will cost. This means not alone economy in power, but in machinery and help also.

Raw material of many kinds in good quantity, including cotton, timber for furni- ture, . clay for brick, tile and terra cotta, the products of various mines and other raw material.

With 34 passenger trains daily Charlotte is easily the largest railroad center of the Carolinas. Freight facilities are unexcelled for both local and distant shippers. The Southern and Seaboard railroads operate daily package cars in all directions for convenience of shippers locally.

Located on the main line of the largest system in the South, it is easily access- ible from all points North, East, West and South.

The seven completely equipped machine shops and the large supply houses of Charlotte make easy the obtaining of supplies and prevent long delays to the manufac- turer in case of breakdown.

Charlotte is the only city in the United States where a contract can be made for the building and fitting out of a complete cotton mill or cotton oil mill.

Seven banks, conducted on sound basis by able business men, with total assets of $9,000,000. Charlotte banks don't fail.

Seventeen miles of electric street railway, and four more in process of construc- tion.

The receipts of the Charlotte post office have more than doubled during the past four years.

A superb system of graded macadamized roads reaching into the country from Charlotte in every direction, 150 miles in all.

Charlotte is surrounded by a beautiful and productive agricultural country.

Charlotte is the acknowledged center of the cotton mill industry of the South. With- in 100 miles of Charlotte are 335 cotton mills representing an investment of $130,000,000 and operating about 4,000,000 spindles.

More than one half of the looms and spindles of the entire South are within two hours ride of Charlotte.

A modern $250,000 fire-proof hotel has just opened to the public, which with the other excellent houses now doing business, will give to Charlotte hotel accommodations unsurpassed by any city of the same size.

Three carefully conducted Building and Loan Associations have enabled Charlotte to beconie a city of home owners.

During the past five years over 7,000 buildings have been built in Charlotte.

With its varied industrial plants, numbering 100 in all, Charlotte employs approxi- mately 10,000 people who receive in wages $2,000,000 annually. The city is entirely exempt from labor troubles and strikes.

A well governed city, well lighted and supplied with good water and sewerage, at- tractive public buildings, including the city and county buildings, churches, schools, col- leges, library, U. S. Assay office, hospitals, post office and railroad depots. The moral tone of the people is the highest, and the 60 churches are filled on the Sabbath day.

The population of Charlotte is 40,000, and shows an increase during the past ten years of 25,000.

And last but by no means the least Charlotte's Directory Service is equal to the best in the world, a work that every good citizen should lend their support; for such a publica- tion will do more to advertise Charlotte away from home, than almost any other mediumn.

With thanks to the general public for assistance during its preparation, and to our patrons for generous support, we are respectfully,

THE WALSH DIRECTORY CO., W. H. Walsh, Prest.
