MR. BUSINESS MAN:
Did you ever stop to consider why your City Directory is one of the most effective and economical methods of reach- ing the people of your community ALL THE TIME, "every day in the year in fact ?"
Those who BUY without looking at the list of those who sell do themselves great injustice.
The classified lists in your City Directory form the best buyers' guide on earth, a modern up-to-date method of getting what you want.
Your Charlotte City Directory is consulted more than FIVE THOUSAND times a day for the entire year. Does it not look on its face that it's worth in- vesting a few dollars each year in your Directory ?
In addition to this your Charlotte Directory is sent to the Directory Libra- ries in all prominent cities.
Think of this when our Representa- tive calls again.

PREFACE
POPULATION within DIRECTORY Limits
50,423
TN PRESENTING our 1910 Volume of the Charlotte Directory to our patrons, it is again our pleasure to state that CHARLOTTE continues its growth; in fact, so substantial that we again call atten- tion to the prophecy that CHARLOTTE will have a population of 100,000 in 1916.
The present volume contains 15,327 names, which in this commu- nity indicates a population of 50.423 divided thus: Whites, 32,655; Colored, 17,768; an increase of a little more than 10% within the year. which is a remarkable showing, even for Charlotte.
During the twelve months which have just elapsed, the City of Charlotte has made rapid strides along commercial and industrial lines. Many evidences are apparent on all sides of the progress being made. The appearance of many new buildings; the overhauling of old ones; the activity to be seen on the streets; the many loads of household goods which have arrived at the freight depot, each in- dicating a new family; the increasing demand for commodities in the line of daily necessities; the increase of deposits in the banks; the increase in the annual volume of business; the advance in real estate; all bear out the statement that Charlotte is enjoying a steady, healthy growth.
The completion of the Realty building, with its twelve stories and basement, during 1909 has added to Charlotte a much needed modern office building. That there was a demand for such a building is in evidence, for in ten months' time, after completion, 85% of the offices have been rented.
Nearly fifty firms have, during the past year, placed representa- tives here and opened offices, the better to care for the business of this territory.
The handsome American Building, the home of the American
814838
Trust Co., was completed late in 1909, and represents an investment of $130,000.
The business of Belk Bros Department Store having outgrown its present quarters, a roomy six story structure has been provided at a cost of $90,000. to care for the increasing volume of business.
The new quarters of the Manufacturers' Club. built at a cost of nearly $100,000, adds another very handsome structure to the group of buildings of a public character already possessed by this City, and which places the City of Charlotte in a class by itself so far as the two Carolinas are concerned.
The buildings in progress for the past year have included the greatest number of dwelling houses ever erected in Charlotte during one twelve months; a large addition to the Stonewall Hotel; several large buildings for wholesale and retail business; fire department station; school buildings; churches; apartment houses; seven new factories; additions to five factories, one of which involves an invest- ment of $100,000.
Every builder and every mechanic in the building trade in Char- lotte has had no idle time whatever during the past year.
Real estate values are steadily advancing in Charlotte. This is one of the best evidences of growth, for the advance is only made possible by an increase in demand. and the latter is only possible through additions to the population. Certain pieces of property, which were sold five years ago, have shown an advance of 50% in recent transfers.
New telephones were installed during the past year to the num- ber of 419, which is a very good index to the growth of the City. There are now in use, altogether, 3,094 phones and they are on the increase daily.
The postal receipts reached $136,000 January 1, 1910, an increase of a trifle above 16% over the previous year.
The bank deposits have reached the $6.000,000 mark. The total banking assets amount to $11,952,625.
The four Building and Loan Associations are capitalized at $8,000,000 and do a flourishing business. They have provided the means for a large number of people to secure homes of their own. and are equivalent to or perhaps superior to savings banks in the benefits to the people at large. These associations are the means of stimulating the building business and encourage the erection of the better class of structures.
Charlotte cotton mills consume nearly 50,000 bales of cotton each year. Geographical location has given to Charlotte the en- viable position of being the center of the cotton mill development of
the South. Within a radius of one-hundred miles of the City are 425 cotton mills, operating 5,511,543 spindles and 120,000 looms. and rep- resenting $150,000,000 of capital.
The Charlotte Street Railway Company has been pushing the extension of its lines, double tracking in some places, improving the equipment. running additional cars, so as to provide more frequent service and keep pace with the continued growth of the City.
Entering into the commercial and industrial life of the City to no small degree. The Greater Charlotte Club has become a very useful factor in the welfare of the City. It has grown in size and im- portance, until now it is doing a work that makes it indispensible to the material welfare of the City. This organization invites the world to "Watch Charlotte Grow." During the past year a large number of new members have been added to the list. The Club has taken quarters in the most central part of the City-fitted up an office in a representative manner and is accomplishing a work which is far reaching in its results.
In the office of this Club may be found a library of directories, which includes a large number of the important cities of the country. This library has been obtained for the free use of the public, through the courtesy of the Directory Publishers.
Charlotte is the logical commercial centre of the two Carolinas and is a distributing point for both.
With thanks to the general public for assistance during its prep- aration, and to our patrons for support we are respectfully.
THE WALSH DIRECTORY CO., Charlotte, N. C .. May 1, 1910.
