PREFACE.

CENSUS

41,325

I

N presenting our 1908 volume of the Charlotte City Directory to our patrons, we are pleased to state that Charlotte is rapidly progressing both as to population and general improvement.

We estimate that within the confines of the territory embraced in this volume there lives 41,325 people, of course, these facts are arrived at from an estimate of the number of names contained in this volume and will be found to be pretty near correct.

Charlotte has many natural advantages, being located on the main line of the largest system of the south it is easily accessible from all points.

Tributary to Charlotte is water power of at least 200,000 electrical .horse power, available to the manufacturer at less than two-thirds of what steam power will cost, this means much saving in power and help to the manufacturing interests.

Charlotte has one of the best systems of macadamized roads, reaching out through the county in every direction, and the principal streets are now having a modern system of paving laid which will add greatly to the city's appearance.

Charlotte is surrounded by a beautiful and productive agricultural country.

Charlotte is the acknowledged center of the cotton mill industry of the South. Within 100 miles of Charlotte are 335 cotton mills representing an investment of $130,000,000 and operating about 4,000,000 spindles-

More than one-half of the looms and spindles of the entire South are within two hours ride of Charlotte.

The carefully conducted Building and Loan Associations have enabled Charlotte to become a city of home owners.

With its varied industrial plants, numbering 100 in all, Charlotte employs approxi- mately 10,000 people who receive in wages $2,000,000 annually. The city is entirely exempt from labor troubles and strikes.

A well governed city, well lighted and supplied with good water and sewerage, at- tractive public buildings, including the city and county buildings, churches, schools, colleges, library, U. S. Assay office, hospitals, post office and railroad depots. The normal tone of the people is the highest, and the 60 churches are filled on the Sabbath ciay.

The population of Charlotte is 41,325 and shows an increase during the past eleven years of over 26,000.

And last but by no means the least Charlotte's Directory Service is equal to the best in the world, a work that every good citizen should lend their support; for such a publication will do more to advertise Charlotte away from home, than almost any other medium.

With thanks to the general public for assistance during its preparation, and to our patrons for generous support, we are respectfully.

THE WALSH DIRECTORY CO.,
