1. Locate the fire alarm box nearest your home
2. Stay near the box when pulled for fire, to direct the fire- men
3. In case of fire, call Fire Department. Speak distinctly when calling the department by phone. Give the exact location of the fire. Don't say: "Come to my house quick."
4. Keep on the sidewalk when apparatus is going to a fire
5. Give the right-of-way to the fire department when it is responding to an alarm
6. Realize that the fire de- partment is ready at all times to respond to fires within thirty seconds after an alarm is sent in. That delay in sending in an alarm is responsible for nearly every large fire that occurs. With snow on the ground and a two-mile run up hill, the de- partment must be notified quick- ly to be of any service. The most efficient service is rendered if the department arrives within three minutes after the fire breaks out
7. Own a fire extinguisher if possible.
8. Have two six-quart pails always handy
9. Give the firemen credit when they deserve it
10. Look for exits in thea- tres, halls and public buildings -Department of Public Safety, Fire Division, City of Asheville
