ASHEVILLE, N. C. "In The Land Of The Sky"

Asheville, North Carolina, a city having an estimated popula- tion of 47,000, is one of the most beautiful cities in Eastern America. Occupying a position on a high table land (2,300 feet in altitude), the city is surrounded by a wall of forested mountain ranges which not only add to the scenic attractions of this region but form a protecting barrier to high winds and storms and create for this particular plateau a most salubrious climate conducive to the best in health and comfort all the year.

The plateau on which Asheville and a number of other cities are located has long been known by the poetic title of "The Land of the Sky." The atmosphere of this section is high and bracing and at the same time the altitude is not too great to be pleasant to those who suffer from high elevations. The Land of the Sky is tra- versed by clear mountain streams and jeweled by numerous lakes which have been created by the hand of man.

ASHEVILLE, A PROSPEROUS CITY

Asheville being the commercial center for Western North Caro- lina has increased greatly during the last half decade in industrial prosperity, in commercial activity; and in the annual tourist trade

which is an important contributing factor to the wealth of this community. During recent years Asheville's industrial develop- ment has outdistanced all other phases of the city's activities in growth and increasing importance. Three main industries are en- tered into actively in Western North Carolina. They are the man- ufacture of cotton goods, refining of wool products and the manu- facture of leather. Some mining of semi-precious stones, quarrying of road material and building stones, production of mica and an amount of foundry work is also carried on. Two large cotton mills, the Beacon Mills at Swannanoa, and the Sayles Finishing Plant at Biltmore, have been added to the Asheville cotton milling equip- ment recently. They will be in operation in 1927. The Hans Rees Tannery and the Carolina Wood Products Company are two of the largest plants of the kind in the country. Both are located in Asheville. The Dimension Manufacturing Company will begin op- eration at an early date to add its quota to the manufactured products of this section. The growth of manufacturing in Ashe- ville may be measured by the fact that since 1899 manufactured products in Asheville have increased from three million dollars in value to thirty-six million. The number of workers has tripled during that period.

Industrial opportunities hàve only been slightly touched in this region where waterpower within the next few years will be abun- dant and exceedingly inexpensive. The dams of the Southern Power Company are already contributing greatly to industrial ad- vancement, ten of these structures being located on the Catawba River. The Carolina Power Company has begun construction of an eighty thousand horsepower project on the Pigeon River near Ashe- ville and the Aluminum Company of America has already laid the foundation for a series of five dams which in the aggregate will exceed Muscle Shoals in production. This project is located on the Little Tennessee River in the extreme western part of the state. Considering Western North Carolina at large, it is worthy of note to mention the Champion Fibre Company, of Canton, which is one of the largest paper and pulp mills in the world. This plant thrives on the by-products of the forest industries of the region.

MOUNTAIN INDUSTRIES ARE FLOURISHING

Industries started a number of years ago by George W. Van- derbilt among the mountaineers of the section are still profitably in operation. Among these may be mentioned the Biltmore Home- spun Industries at Grove Park, where pure wool homespun is woven by hand, the Tryon Wood Carving shops which produce a large amount of artistic carving in black walnut and other durable woods. The potteries located near the clay beds which here produce a good quality of earthen ware. These industries are carried on by hand, and the labor in most cases is furnished by the native mountaineer.

quented by an annual throng of nearly seven hundred thousand visitors each year. Eleven prominent inns and hotels having a capacity of twenty-five hundred cater to visitors in this section and offer throughout the year a service which is equal to any in in the world and which at the same time is given at a reasonable rate. Both American and European plan hotels are included in this list. Five golf courses, one of them an eighteen-hole municipal course, are offered to the visitor within a short distance of the city. Rid- ing, swimming, tennis and other sports make up the round of ac- tivity in Asheville during the year.

Asheville offers facilities of seven excellent theatres and sup- ports an annual season of opera. A Municipally owned baseball club is maintained, the city having a place in the South Atlantic League. A municipal stadium is under construction for the football season of 1927. The city is the scene of annual golf and tennis tourna- ments which embrace in their interest the entire eastern United States. Horse shows and other events of this sort are additional attractions. Asheville has an excellent municipal library which houses the O'Henry Memorial collection, a most unique institution.

MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT

Asheville is governed by a board of three commissioners, the Mayor presiding, the commissioner of public safety and commis- sioner of public utilities. At present these officials are John H. Cathey, Mayor; C. H. Bartlett, Commissioner of Public Safety ; and F. L. Conder, Commissioner of Public Utilities. The city is con- structing at the cost of a half million dollars, a new city hall and is cooperating with the county of Buncombe in creating on Pack Square a civic center. The city has constructed a most modern city market and offers a comprehensive school system which is of a high standard. The city as a whole offers well paved streets and a water system which is adequate to all needs. The surface waters of Western North Carolina are noted for their purity, and the Asheville supply is secured from the tops of the mountains sur- rounding the city. The municipal government is actively engaged in the building of a better city, this including the widening of streets and construction of public utilities.

A BRIEF HISTORY

Asheville was established by John Burton in 1794. It was at that time known as Morristown. In 1894 the town was incorpor- ated as Asheville, being named after Samuel and John Ashe, two prominent citizens. The commercial form of government was adopted in 1905. Asheville's present development dates from the end of the World War and since that time it has grown to metro-

politan proportions. The citizens of this region are considering extending the city limits to include five or more suburbs which will increase the population to 57,000.

TRANSPORTATION

The Southern Railway serves Asheville with four main lines of its system. Twenty-four trains daily and over thirty Pullman lines are included in this service. Freight traffic has increased in this city to nearly double its former proportions within the last twelve months. Asheville is located at the junction of a number of trunk line highways, including Dixie Route A and the Appala- chian Scenic Highway. The city is easily reached over paved motor routes which are a part of the seven thousand miles of North Carolina road system. Twenty-five hundred miles of this system are now hard surfaced.

AGRICULTURE

The surplus crops of Western North Carolina in 1925 sold for more than twenty-five million dollars. Asheville is a center for apple production, general grain and field crops, small fruits, live- stock and other products of this sort. The increasing wealth of this region is due to good roads and to the Farmers' Federation, an organization for the farmers of this section.

NEARBY CITIES

Within a short distance of Asheville are located other cities of the mountain section which should be mentioned. Waynesville, thirty-two miles west, is the highest incorporated city in the east. Bryson City, seventy-three miles west, is the gate city to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Hendersonville, twenty- four miles to the South, is a thriving resort city. Black Mountain, sixteen miles east, is a center for religious assemblies. Weaver- ville, seven miles north, is a growing community in a diversified region. Within a short distance of the city are located Mt. Mit- chell, Chimney Rock, the Sapphire Country, the Nantahala Gorge, Hot Springs, Lake Junaluska, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, now being established.

THE ASHEVILLE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Serving Asheville and Western North Carolina at large the Asheville Chamber of Commerce is a powerful agency supported by the citizens of this section. The office of the chamber is located on Market Street. Visitors are cordially invited to take advantage of the information service and other facilities offered by the or- ganization
