This elevation secures a modification of the summer heat, which is never intense, rarely rising above 84°, sometimes to 90°, in the shade ; and the summer nights are always deliciously pleas- ant. While, during the summer, the air is always fanned with gentle breezes, there is marked and remarkable absence of boister-

ous winds. When the spring is fully established, the atmospheric turmoil at once subsides, only to be renewed on the return of win- ter. The winters are marked by the same general moderation ; occasional severe accesses of cold, at which time the mercury falls below zero, high northwesterly winds, frequent light snows, oc- casional rains, but a predominence of clear, balmy and delightful weather. The annual rainfall is ascertained to be a fraction over 40 inches, taking the average of ten years. There are exceptional years in which more or less rain falls than usual, but on the whole, there is great uniformity, and the climate of Asheville is unmis- takably healthy, invigorating and delightful.
Asheville, as we have before said, made little progress from its foundation until it was reached by the W. N. C. Railroad in ISSI. Its healthfulness, the beauty of its surrounding scenery, and some foreshadowing of its future prominence had brought it into notice ; and this gave a stimulus to the work of internal im- provement which was to make Asheville accessible, and also do long deferred justice to long neglected Western North Carolina. In the fulfillment of this justice, more has been developed than was anticipated, for more deliberate observation of its position, and the topography of the country, proves it to be a natural and unavoidable railroad centre. The configuration of the valleys and of the mountains, demonstrates this to be strikingly true. The valley of the Swannanoa, opening westward from the Swannanoa gap of the Blue ridge, opens it for the passage of the railroad into the mountain region. The Hickorynut Gap, crossing the Ridge further South than the former, opens another line of communica- tion, soon, it is expected, to be occupied by the Carolina Central Railroad ; and both of these lines converge upon Asheville. The broad depression that begins at Hendersonville, has induced the construction of the Spartanburg and Asheville road, which also necessarily comes to Asheville. So, the contemplated Greeneville and Asheville road, and the Atlanta and Asheville road, to both of which charters have been granted must come down the valley of the French Broad river, and must unavoidably come to Asheville. And when they reach Asheville, their further progress is governed by the configuration of the river. Below Asheville, a gorge, mar-

gined with a narrow bench, the river forcing its way through the Smoky mountains, and working through them, cutting the only possible pathway to railroad construction. . Westward from Ashe- ville, the same remarkable conditions exist, the valley of Hominy Creek offering the only practicable, almost the only possible ac- cess to the western counties, and to northwestern Georgia. And, again, the only feasible route for roads to the north, looking to connections with Baltimore or other distant termini, must without other alternative of choice, have Asheville in its line of direction .. All openings through the mountains converge at Asheville.
The knowledge of this fact has become apparent to saga- cious men, and has had material influence upon the fortunes of the place. Already it is very widely known as a health and pleas- ure resort, is accessible from every point of the compass, connect- ed by perfect railroad service and with full telegraphic facilities, From a population of 2,216 in ISSo, it has advanced as is shown in our census table. The main streets have been macad- ized, the sidewalks are in process of reconstruction, a splendid system of electric lighting, unequaled in the South, dispels the darkness, a water supply unsurpassed anywhere in purity of qual- ity and exhaustless abundance in quantity secures against the rav- ges of fire, is made to permeate every street and supply every house- hold, and by the elevation of its distributing source, does its work automatically. Health is promoted by this abundance of fine wa- ter, and by the use to be made of it in connection with sewerage, and also by the control obtained over the dust of the streets.
In addition to what has already been accomplished, a com- pany is formed to light the city with gas ; a street railway com- pany will soon begin the work of placing its lines ; a telephone exchange has been in useful and successful operation for a year ; the best of hotel accommodations are now offered the traveling public, and their very large patronage necessitate continual en- largements and additions to their buildings. The principal hotels are the Swannanoa, Battery Park, Grand Central, Carolina House, Western Hotel and Slagle Hotel. The boarding houses are numerous, and good, but too many to mention just here.

Among the other institutions of the city. we first mention the chief educational establishments. The oldest and largest of these, is the Asheville Female College, with Rev. James Atkins, Jr., President, and J. A. Branner, Business Manager, and an able and competent corps of teachers. This college is situated in one of the most pleasant and picturesque portions of the city, with large and beautiful grounds surrounding the buildings, and shaded by a splendid growth of giant forest trees. The new college (in course of erection at the time of this writing) will be a building possess- ing all modern improvements and appointments, and one of which Asheville, and in fact the entire South may justly feel proud. For many years after the war this college was closed, and not until the present management was placed in charge did it fully succeed in regaining the patronage and prestige it had prior to that time Now, it is unquestionably one of the first institutions for the edu- cation of young ladies in the South. The Asheville Millitary Academy, with Prof. S. F. Venable, principal, is also a valuable institution for the education of young men and boys, and enjoys a large and well deserved patronage.
Several private schools are also to be found here, and also two largely attended schools for colored children.
All denominations are supplied with churches, and among the charitable institutions is the Mission Hospital, under charge of a committee of ladies, and visited daily by physicians and surgeons of prominence. The Masonic Fraternity, the Odd Fellows, the Knights of Labor and the Sons of Temperance, each have lodges and large memberships. The Asheville Club and the Asheville Library are both prosperous and well patronized.
The press of Asheville may justly claim the influence which has prompted its growth, and drawn to it the interest now felt abroad. There are two daily papers, the Citizen, edited by Fur- man, Stone & Cameron, and the Advance, published by Theodore Hobgood, both morning papers, and both issuing weekly editions. The Skyland Herald, published weekly by A. H. Jones, Town Topics, weekly, by Randolph & Hunt, and the Gleaner, weekly,

published by the colored people. In addition to these are the fol- lowing monthlies: Farmers Journal, Country Homes, published by Tomlinson Bros., and the Land of the Sky, published by Natt. Atkinson.
Such is a brief outline of the present condition of Asheville. Upon the advancement it has made within the past five years, its future progress may be safely predicated. Regarded at first chief- ly as a health and summer resort, it has confirmed these claims. It is now unequivocally recognized as an important railroad centre, a large manufacturing centre, an important distributing point of trade, and a social and political centre of far-reaching influence. With a present population of 7,000, the next decade will probably close on one of not less than 25,000.

ASHEVILLE STREET DIRECTORY.
Public Square is the center of the city, and all streets are numbered as, North. East, South or West from it.
All 'streets running parallel with Main are numbered from Patton avenue, or College street, or from the beginning of the street nearest to either of the above streets. All streets running parallel with Patton avenne, or College street, are numbered fiom Main street, as above, Main street being the dividing line for all streets running East and West, and Patton avenue and College, for all running North and South.
All numbers on the right hand side of the street going from the dividing street are odd, except on North Main, which has the odd numbers on the left. Main street being the only one that runs entirely across the city, the even numbers were all placed on one side, both East and West, for convenience.
