THE WOMAN'S SOCIETY OF CHRISTIAN SERVICE

The purpose of the Woman's Society of Christian Service is to unite all the women of the Church in Christian living and service.

Therefore, we seek to enlist all women to study the needs of the world, to help develop and support Christian work, and to take part in such activities as will strengthen the local church, improve civic and world conditions for the establish- ment of a Christian community.

The Society meets each first Monday of the month. At 11:00 a.m. the Spiritual Life Group meets in the Church Parlor, followed by the General circles. There are 13 circles arranged to suit the needs of the individual, having morning, afternoon and night groups.

THE CIRCUIT-RIDERS Advisor - Thomas H. McCauley

This group is composed of young people who seek, in a time of individual transition, to maintain ties with the eternal values of our religious heritage. They find inspiration in the activity, the courage, and the dedication of the circuit- riders who carried the message of Methodism with them across the face of a new nation.

The program takes into consideration all those pressures bearing upon young people on the threshold of maturity and is designed for flexibility commensurate with the varying size and interests of the group. From Sunday to Sunday the pro- gram may take the form of seminar, symposium, forum, directed conversation, lecture, debate, or excursion. The program further contemplates expansion to in- clude activities of a social and recreational nature appropriate to the interests of the group.

ADULT CHURCH SCHOOL CLASSES

Superintendent of Adult Division: Mr. Thomas S. Coble, Jr. 2005 N. Club Blvd. 286-2697

HOME BUILDERS CLASS

Teacher: Dr. Earl Brown, 411 North Gregson 682-8213

Young married couples who are just getting started with their families and careers have joined together for fellowship and study on Sunday mornings using study themes which are related to their common interests. The class works under the direction of a teacher advisor and program committee who arranges the Sunday morning study. Frequently members of the class lead the discussions. Principally, membership in this group is composed of those in the 20 - 35 age group whose interests are directed toward a discussion type class. The class meets in the church basement.

THE YOUNG ADULT CLASS

Teacher: Dr. Herbert O. Sieker, 204 Forestwood Dr. 489-9041

Single young adults and married couples form the membership of this class of young adults. Their common interests center around mutual vocational life and the need to develop social fellowship. This group appeals especially to single young men and women who experience a need for making new acquaintances and making a contribution to church life. This group also uses the unit plan for their Sunday morning study, setting up periodic areas of study and selecting re- source leaders as teachers. The class is located in a room adjacent to the sanc- tuary.

THE ANCHOR CLASS

Teacher: Resource Leaders and Unit Plan

The Anchor Class is composed largely of professional men and women, married couples and single adults in the general age range of 25 - 45 years. The objective of this group is to provide study in the Christian faith and to explore its application to their vocational. community and home life. The class sets their own areas of study, using reputable teachers in their field. This group meets at 9:45 in the church parlor.

PASTOR'S AIDES CLASS

Teacher: Dr. H. E. Spence, 3629 Hope Valley Road 489-5227

The Pastor's Aides Class was organized in 1913 by the church pastor. This class for men has had many distinguished teachers including Dr. W. P. Few and Dr. H. E. Spence. The class has a regular Sunday morning service which begins at 9:45. The aim of the class is, as suggested by its name, to aid the pastor in any way possible. New members are always welcome to this class.

THE LILLIE DUKE BIBLE CLASS

Organized in 1914 as The Daughters of Wesley, with thirty-one members, the class now has an enrollment of one hundred-fifteen. The first teacher was Miss Lillie Duke, who retired in 1938. Mrs. C. W. Peppler taught from 1938 until her death in 1953. In 1941 the name was changed to Lillie Duke Class. The present room was decorated as a memorial to Mrs. Peppler. Since 1953 Mrs. A. H. Bor- land has taught the class.

(20)

THE MINNIE P. GATES BIBLE CLASS

Teacher: Mrs. James W. Holsinger, 2306 Wilson St. 286-2673

In 1947 a small group of women of the Duke Memorial Church congregation formed a Sunday School class and asked Mrs. A. M. Gates to serve as their teacher. This class has grown in size and stature and presently has about fifty members. Its members are largely mothers, professional and employed women. We are sorry to lose our former teacher, Miss Helen Oyler, who was forced to re- sign because of illness.

THE KATIE JOHNSON CLASS

Teacher: Mrs. Holland Holton, 809 Watts St. 286-8004

This class for adult women attracts as members business women and home- makers of varying ages. The class is very active and has a variety of projects which absorb the interest and energies of the members. A business meeting is held monthly on the first Tuesday night at 7:30 usually in the homes of the mem- bers, but sometimes in the Church Parlor.

THE GLEANER CLASS

Teacher: Miss Dorothy Kirkland, 1408 Washington St. 681-2480

"Let us not be weary in well doing for in due season we shall reap if we faint not." This Motto-that of the Gleaner Class-tells of the spirit of this class of ladies of varying ages. Interest in service to the church and community and in- terest in others give purpose to the class activities.

This class was organized in 1906 and has grown through the years. It has always been a very active group of adult women and welcomes to its member- ship kindred spirits. Monthly meetings are held the first Thursday.

MRS. R. N. WILSON'S BIBLE CLASS

Forty years ago two classes of young girls without a teacher joined forces. Prof. R. N. Wilson taught them one Sunday. Feeling sorry for their plight, he told them he would get them a good teacher if they would support her. He sent his wife, who was everything he promised. Mrs. R. N. Wilson's Bible Class has been particularly fortunate in its two teachers, Mrs. Wilson who kept the class until her death , and its present teacher, Mrs. Fred Darkis. Both these women have fostered a spirit of integrity, helpfulness, and Christianity applied to everyday living. From this small class of about twenty professional women have come many teachers and leaders in all phases of church life.

DUKE MEMORIAL CHURCH TRUST FUNDS AND THEIR USE

Duke Memorial Church is the fortunate beneficiary of the generosity of a number of its early members. Through the years the doners of these funds have provided incentive for our Church to achieve large and progressive undertakings In no sense were these funds intended to relieve the membership of its steward- ship responsibilities or to serve as a crutch.

Certain of the gifts made to Duke Memorial have been expendable funds for particular purposes. For example, the late Mrs. Lyda Duke Angier left the sum of $1,000.00 to the Church for physical improvement to the Nursery. This money, spent in 1960, provided the rugs on the floor and other needed items.

Other gifts to our Church have been given in perpetuity and have been in- vested as trust funds, the income from which benefit Duke Memorial. Presented herewith are descriptions of these funds and brief financial statements:

THE PERPETUAL MEMORIAL FUND

The income earned by the investment of the principal funds is to be used in the current budget of the Church. To this fund the following amounts were be- quests :

Mr. B. N. Duke $15,000.00

Mr. Angier B. Duke. 10,000.00

Mrs. B. N. Duke 4,800.00

Mrs. Lucy Wilson 2,100.00

THE MEMORIAL CHURCH FUND, INC.

This fund is much the largest of the trust funds which have been created for the benefit of Duke Memorial. The income from the principal funds cannot be used for the current budget of the Church, but rather the income must be used for the physical plant. Only extraordinary repairs or capital expenditures are allowed.

The fund was created August 26, 1926. A board of trustees was set up to ad- minister this fund. There are seven members of this board, of whom the Presi- dent and Secretary of Duke University and the Chairman of the Board of Ste- wards of Duke Memorial Church shall be members by virtue of their offices. The other four are to come from the membership of the Church. At the present time (1961), the trustees of the fund are: Dr. Deryl Hart, President; Mr. Charles E. Jordan, Vice-President; Judge M. T. Spears, Sr., Vice-President; Mr. John M. Dozier, Secretary-Treasurer; Mrs. Mary D. B. T. Semans, and Dr. John Glasson.
