CHARITABLE ORGANIZATIONS.
Alexander Rescue Home .- Located on the corner of McDowell and Third streets. Founded by R. B. Alexander and the ladies of the First and Second Presbyterian Churches. Object of this organization is the rescue of the young from exposure to vice and suffering. Every child admitted must be of sound mind and free from any deformity which shall render it permanently helpless, and must be free from all contagious or incurable diseases. HOW TO LOCATE ALARMS.
If the alarm is sounded from Box 14, the Alarm Bells will strike ONE, then pause five seconds and strike FOUR, thus : I-IIII, indicating fire in the neighborhood of No. 14 Box. If sounded at No. 47 Box the Alarm Bell strikes IIII-IIIIIII. Every alarm is repeated four times at intervals of 20 seconds.
The number of the Box signaling the alarm will be struck upon the bells of the Engine House, the Water Works, together with the Bell upon the Tower.
Keys to open Signal Boxes will be placed in the corner houses at the Boxes.
