Southern Station Just Completed at Cost of $1,000,000
Commerce and Transportation
Greensboro's commercial development has depended or four factors, the enterprise of her citizens, the richness of her farming country, her central position in the section and the state and the excellence of her transportation facilities.
The Southern railroad is Greenboro's chief agent of transportation. The operating heads of that great system regards it as the central transfer and distribution point of the piedmont. It was in recognition of this that the road has completed its $1,000,- 000 passenger terminal here and is now en- gaged in almost as large an expenditure on freight transfer and shipping facilities. Greensboro lies midway between Washing- ton and Atlanta on the Southern's main double-track line. She is also about mid- way of the North Carolina line between Goldsboro and Asheville which the South- ern holds under 99-year lease. In addition. she is a central point on the Atlantic and Yadkin railroad between Sanford and Mt. Airy.
A passenger service of 42 trains daily is had in and out of the city, while local and through freights thunder through the yards here daily in the number of 250 or more.
Through state and county construction, ten modern hard-surfaced roads and that many more improved soil roads radiate
from the city in every direction, with the city at the crossing point of three of the state's most important highways, routes 10. 60 and 70. Taking advantage of this, a fast passenger bus service has been so far advanced that nearly 100 busses leave the city on regular schedule each day. The ex- cellence of the city's transportation facil- ities may be judged from the fact that it is the section's leading home for traveling men, nearly 2,000 of them having their head- quarters in this city most of them owning homes, but many using the city's hotels as their central residences.
Greensboro's advance as a wholesale and jobbing center has been more rapid since the recent decision of the Interstate Com- merce Commission on the Southeastern rate case and to-day she is holding a dominant place in hardware, groceries, tires and rub- ber goods, produce, cotton goods and the like. The rates are favorable, excellent facilities may be had adjacent to the rail- roads, the freight and express service is prompt. while the central position of the city in mail distribution is a great advantage for business of the kind.
The modern road system is the city's greatest advantage in retail trade, although a number of the merchant houses have built up reputations that would pull the

trade to Greensboro regardless of the roads. In the city's immediate retail area there are around 300,000 people.
A modern curb market has been lately established and is functioning smoothly with cordial relationship between the city and country people.
A chief commercial advance of the year has been the establishment of the air mail line between New York and Atlanta with onė of the five main stops located 8 miles from Greensboro at Friendship. This new and fast service is expected to add another strong appeal to the city's bid for consider-
ation as a headquarters for business oper- ations.
The Greensboro Chamber of Commerce was the chief agency working in behalf of the city for the establishment of the air port. This organization of 1,000 members is active in every phase of municipal and civic advance. The Greensboro Merchants' Associ- ation, comprising nearly every commercial concern in the city, is also a very active organization. James A Gawthrop is secre- tary of the Chamber of Commerce, while Fred C. Phipps is secretary of the mer- chants' organization.
Business Leaders
Jobbing, wholesale and retail trade are leaders in the city's business structure and take a prominent part in the more than $315,000,000 activity revealed in the clear- ings of the banks in 1926.
Another leading factor in the city's busi- ness life is the insurance organization, with 12 home companies doing a business last year exceeding $12,000,000 in income and with over $500,000,000 insurance in force. The leading company, the Jefferson Stan- dard Life Insurance company, is in its 17-
story office structure. The Dixie Fire In- surance company owns its six-story build- ing, while the Pilot company recently an- nounced the plan of its new home at Sedge- field, a mile or two from the city limits.
The three banks of the city report a combined capital and surplus exceeding $4,000,000, combined resources over $31,- 500.000 and clearings last year of over $315,000,000, nearly 20 per cent. gain over the previous year. There are three industrial banks catering to installment loan and

saving business. Building and loan associa- tions show assets over $4,500,000.
The building trades necessarily occupy a big place in the community's commercial structure in light of the fact that 10 years past have brought around $35,000.000 in building to this city. Last year 1,111 permits were issued for $6,362,000 in building, and the permits for the first four months of 1927 indicate as large or an even larger figure for the present year.
In light of the city's position as a jobbing and wholesale center and as a tourist con-
centration point on a number of routes, Greensboro's hotels have assumed an im- portant place in the business of the city. There are eight hotels of good standard and several others which do not rate so high. The leaders are the O. Henry with 325 rooms and the King Cotton with 225, both are as modern homes for the traveling pub- lie as the country affords.
Greensboro as a home of cotton merchants and brokers handles approximately 400,000 bales per year, a business of around $50,- 000.000.

Greensboro in Industry
With 150 industries producing around 100 different products, the city affords in- dustrial employment for 15,000 people ap- proximately. The annual payroll is close to $15,000,000.
The chief industry is that of the Cones', whose mill at White Oak produces more than 200,000 yards of denim daily for world leadership from a single mill and whose plants at Revolution and Proximity, all three within the city limits, give the con- cern a size exceeded by but few in the nation in the cotton goods manufacturing industry. The Pomona mills are also import- ant in the cotton manufacturing trade.
A tremendous impetus to the silk manu- facturing business in Greensboro has been given within the last six months in the addition of two modern plants to the city's industrial roll, both established by Phila- delphia concerns and both erecting modern plants in the west part of the city. An in- vestment of well over $500,000 is being made in Greensboro by the firms.
The Vick Chemical company, with its chief laboratory factory, office and execu- tive departments in Greensboro, is one of the most important elements in the city's business structure. Over 21,000,000 jars of the product, designed to combat colds and coughs, were sold last year.
The Blue Bell Overall company, owned by the Big Ben Company, is doubling the size of the Greensboro factory to make it one of the largest in the world. The concern uses 150,000 yards or more of denim each day in the manufacture of its products.
Greensboro has a number of cigar fac- tories doing good business.
An important section of the industrial activity of the city is held by the fertilizer factories, plants being operated south of the city by several of the big national con- cerns.
Recent years have seen an increasing ac- tivity in steel and iron fabrication and in kindred industries.

School Facilities
Good schools are any city's greatest in- ducement for new settlers, and in this division Greensboro excels. There are 8,500 pupils in the schools of the Greater Greens- boro district and, although present facilities are as good as the average, the city is not content and the people have already authorized the expenditure of $2,300,000 in erecting additional structures and securing more and more modern equipment. The standard of teaching is high, as is evidenced by the fact that year after year Greensboro ranks first in the state in quality of her public school work on estimate of the state authorities.
The city has two colleges for whites and three for negroes, with three other colleges for whites within 15 miles of her limits. The two white colleges are for women, one of them North Carolina College for Women with nearly 2,000 students and a magnificent physical equipment. The other is Greens- boro College, a Methodist institution of hon- orable history and of high standing.
The leading negro college is the State Agricultural and Technical College, for males. There are two negro colleges for women.
Recreation in Greensboro
The chief recreational facility of the city is in her system of public parks, bisecting its area and providing an acre of park lands for every 50 persons. These lands are rapid- ly being improved and fitted for public use. A system of public playgrounds is needed and that need is to receive the attention of the city authorities at an early date.
Two 18-hole golf courses are available and another is soon to be constructed. These are at the Greensboro County Club and at Sedgefield. In addition to these places a dozen or more club grounds and buildings are maintained near the city, with facilities
for polo, horseback riding, swimming, ten- nis, baseball and other sports. The resort at Sedgefield, five miles south of the city, is centered abont a splendid new hotel. The region is being made into one rivaling Pine- hurst and Southern Pines in beauty and excelling them in the respect that the climate permits an all-year-round appeal.
The competion of the $150,000 World-War Memorial Stadium has provided a center for the leading sport events of city, county and state and its advantages are being used enthusiastically.

Type of Modern Dairy Barn
The Country Regions
The rapid growth in Greensboro's popula- tion and wealth has been a great aid to the rural back country, for in the provision of a market the dairymen, truckers and farm- ers have found their chief opportunity. Using modern production methods, they have gone ahead rapidly and, where 10 years ago Guilford county was not much above the average North Carolina county in couutry wealth, to-day she is a leader.
Pure-bred sires have been introduced by the forward-looking dairymen and the pro- duction of milk and dairy products has been so far advanced that for the first time in her history Guilford county is now shipping condensed milk outside of her boundaries. The butter, cream, milk and other dairy
products sold in the city are rigidly in- spected by city authorities. It is due to this and to the purity of the water supply and excellence of the sewage disposal system that only a few cases of typhoid fever have been known in years.
Guilford county is on the edge of both the cotton and the tobacco raising belts and her farmers plant both but not in great measure. There is a balance of crops and more attention is paid to the dairying, trucking, grain side of farming than is paid in sectons where the money crop is all the rage. The county government maintains a farm expert and home economics expert and they are paid attention.

Greensboro's Civic Progress
While much of Greensboro's advance in recent years has been the inevitable result of natural advantages, a big part has been played by the initiative and the energy of her residents. There is an air about the city not usually found in a southern one. There is a western breeziness, a yankee verve, a modern attitude along with the traditional southern friendliness. Her people believe in making good livings, in spending freely, in having much, in giving much and in going forward together.
This attitude has found expression in numerous organizations for promotion of
business, civic and social progress. Besides the regular business men's clubs, others have sprung into existence in which men of various trades or interest have associated themselves for mutual aid. In advancing civic consciousness and activity such or- ganizations as the Civic Music Association, the Open Forum, the Euterpe Club and others of the kind have taken active roles in recent years. An expression of it was in the subscription of $150,000 last year for erection of a Memorial Stadium now com- plete and seating 10,000 persons. Greens- boro has 55 churches, a new Y. M. C. A., a new Y. W. C. A., four hospitals and its part of all the other organizations which go so far toward making up a modern community.
