Commerce and Trade

GREENSBORO is easily accessible to a 50-mile trade area having 908,- 000 consumers (1930 Census), 180,- 000 families (est.), $70,000,000 in- dustrial payroll (1930 Census), and $699,719,000 of industrial production (1930 Census).

Greensboro is the principal mar- ket of the northern Piedmont. There are approximately 1,000 retail, serv- ice and professional outlets, handling goods, wares and merchandise lines available in metropolitan centers. Retail sales approximately $30,000,- 000 annually.

Wholesale and agency establish- ments travel between 1,500 and 1,800 salesmen and agents and distribute a wide variety of merchandise over a much larger territory. The area served has greater purchasing power than comparable areas surrounding Richmond or Atlanta.

The home offices of several large insurance companies, together with the territorial and general agencies of numerous national firms, offering all forms of coverage, have created

an "insurance fraternity" which characterizes Greensboro as the "Hartford of the South."

Greensboro is one of the principal cities for Virginia and North and South Carolina conventions. Be- cause Greensboro is the focal point of the most densely populated area in these three states, many organi- zations register larger attendance at Greensboro than elsewhere. Class "A" hotels offer every modern fa- cility.

Greensboro is territorial headquar- ters for many nationally-known firms: Chrysler Corp., DuPont, Truscon Steel, etc.

Bank clearings-1935-$160,336,- 000.

Postal receipts-1935-$631,576.

REGULAR SCHEDULE, DAILY DEPARTURES: 32 passenger trains, 48 buses, 4 airships, 19 regu- lar freight trains (average 5 extras daily), and 26 package cars.

Railway (only double-tracked sys- tem in the Southeast) meets the east and west line of the North Carolina Railroad and the southeast to north- west line of the Atlantic & Yadkin -providing inter-related tariffs over the Seaboard Air Line, Atlantic Coast Line, Norfolk & Western and Southern systems. Modern union passenger, mail and express termin- als.

A network of more than 1,000 miles of hard-surfaced highways within a radius of 50 miles provides a means of easy access to Greensboro for approximately 140,000 automo- bile owners (1935) in the area.

Standard bus lines move in eight directions, connecting with all prin- cipal cities. Atlantic Greyhound, Carolina Coach, and the other car-

ment program scheduled for comple- tion in June, 1936.

Religious and Social Features

The church as an institution has always been a powerful and con- structive force in the life of every neighborhood in Guilford County. The Quaker Meeting House at New Garden (now Guilford College) was established in 1754. Old Buffalo Presbyterian Church was established in Greensboro in 1756.

Colonial churches at Alamance, Deep River, Friedens and elsewhere in this county have made important contributions to the development of fine character and strong citizenship.

Today all leading denominations are represented-Protestant, Catho- lic, Jewish-and maintain handsome and inspiring places of worship.

riers operate under State regulations, clearing through a union terminal.

Greensboro Airport - "Lindley Field" (a pioneer in the Southeast) -serves Greensboro, Winston-Sa- lem and High Point. On Eastern Air Line Co.'s main line, New York to New Orleans-passengers, mail and express. The field has a first-order weather bureau, hangars, restaurant, up-to-date lighting, service equip- ment, radio beacon, radio, and South- ern Bell telephone. Transportation facilities and density of population combine to make Greensboro more easily accessible to more people than any other city in the South Atlantic states.

Note: Field now closed by $267,- 000 major improvement and enlarge-

There exists among all communes an extraordinary religious tolerance activated by progressive ministerial associations and the Council of Pro- testants, Catholics and Jews.

The social life of many rural com- munities centers around and in their neighborhood churches. The urban churches also have highly-developed social programs.

Modern country clubs at High Point, Sedgefield, Starmount and Greensboro have handsome club- houses, where friends gather for dancing, bridge, study, musical pro- grams, fox-hunting, riding, tennis, skeet, hiking, swimming and many other forms of social intercourse.

Regular music and lecture courses bring outstanding attractions to the

city: Authors and artists, symphony music, occasional opera and metro- politan stage productions. Eight moving-picture theatres (two largest seating 2,600-1,800) offer current at- tractions. Two auditoriums seating 2,800 and 1,800.

The famous "Playliker" organiza- tion of Woman's College, University of N. C., and the dramatic units at Greensboro and Guilford colleges of- fer an outlet for amateur theatricals.

INTRODUCTION

THE O. HENRY HOTEL

The World War Memorial Stadium provides an ideal setting for major football games, day and night base- ball, interstate track meets, tennis tournaments, etc.

A city-country park provides three lakes for swimming, fishing and boating. A recreation center near Jamestown affords a modern swim- ming pool. Brandt Lake offers boating and fishing.

At Sedgefield there are horses and foxhounds. The countryside abounds in quail and other game. Several game preserves are maintained by sportsmen of national prominence.

There are twenty-five private clubs and camps nearby, containing a to- tal of 2,273 acres of land and 175 acres of water area.

Championship 18-hole golf courses, private tennis courts and swimming pools are offered by country clubs at High Point, Starmount, Sedgefield and Greensboro. A total of 1,109 acres reserved for parks and play- grounds by the city of Greensboro, and a full-time recreational director is employed to promote a well- rounded program of neighborhood activity throughout the year.

Pinehurst and Roaring Gap re- sorts within two hours' drive.
