THE FAYETTEVILLE OBSERVER

OF FAYETTEVILLE, N. C.

was founded in 1817, and, for the most of that time, has been in possession of the late Edward J. Hale or his son, E. J. Hale, once president of The Observer Corporation and chief owner and for six years past U. S. Minister to Porto Rica. For the two decades ending with 1865, it was the most in- fluential and most widely circulated journal in North Caro- lina, and was one of the leading papers of the South, having a large circulation in all the States between North Carolina and the Mexican border. As a result of the destruction of its office buildings and property by General Sherman, in 1865, and of the decadence of the town in which it was printed, its publication was suspended for a period there- after. Upon its resumption, its circulation naturally fell far short of that before and during the war. But this is now increasing rapidly with the new life recently taken on by the city of Fayetteville and by the adjacent country. The former has become an important silk and cotton mill center and wholesale distributing point, as well as a shopping place for a half dozen counties. The latter has added large truck industries to the already important cotton-growing industry. The Fayetteville Observer enters daily every home in the city of Fayetteville, Cumberland County, and is the home paper of the suburban towns. The Fayetteville Observer is the only daily paper published in a radius of seventy-four miles.

With such a history back of it, the Observer naturally circulates among the very best people in this section, the highly prosperous Upper Cape Fear country of North Caro- lina; and probably to a greater extent than in the case of any other paper, its readers scan every word in it, advertise- ments as well as reading matter. A glance at the advertise- ments carried will show how completely it represents the people it serves.

Fayetteville is 6 hours from Richmond, 9 hours from Washington, and 15 hours from New York.
