Romantic Growth

The manufacturing industry began to develop in this community in 1848 when the Mountain Island and Woodlawn cotton mills were built. During the next 24 years only one other industry came into being, and it was not until 1872, after the War between the States, that real industrial development began. In 1888 there were eight manufacturing plants in the county.

It was in 1872 that the first railroad was built through Gaston County, mak- ing available to the manufacturers of the area raw material supplies and the consuming markets of the world.

Gastonia was a cross-roads village in 1880, with a population of 236. It was incorporated as a town in 1877, and the charter was amended in 1910, changing the name from the Town of Gastonia to the City of Gastonia.

Each decennial census has recorded a substantial growth in population. Pop- ulation figures since 1880 have been as follows: 1880, 236; 1890, 1, 033; 1900, 4,610; 1910, 5, 759; 1920, 12, 871; 1930, 17, 093; 1940, 21, 313; 1950, 23, 069.

Industrial Supremacy

Today Gastonia has 48 textile manufacturing plants, with 600, 000 spindles, and an average annual payroll of approximately $50 million.

Gaston County at the present time has 126 textile plants, not to mention the various other smaller and allied manufacturing establishments.

Today the sons of the early pioneers are still carrying on with native-born Americans as employees, with complete understanding of each other and an ab- sence of friction in industrial relationship.

Industrial products of the county include: Cotton yarns, tire fabric, textile machinery, sewing thread, bedspreads, crocheting and knitting yarns, labels, gears, weavers' knotters, roller covering, dress goods, sheeting, leather belt- ing, silk, rayon, mattresses, furniture, textile supplies, hosiery, shoe laces, Army uniform cloth, motor-oil filters, damask, carbon manifolds, novelties, industrial paper products, electrical goods, machinery and other articles.

INTRODUCTION

XI

Gastonia is located on U. S. Highway No. 29 from Washington to Atlanta, which highway is frequently referred to as the Main Street of North Carolina.

XII

INTRODUCTION

Transportation and Utilities

Gastonia is on the main double-track line of the Southern Railwayfrom New York to New Orleans and is also served by the Carolina & Northwestern and Piedmont & Northern railways. Also serving Gastonia are several highways, including U. S. Highway No. 29, the "Main Street of North Carolina," and U. S. No. 321. Three bus lines and numerous motor-freight and express companies operate in all directions from Gastonia. Gastonia is only twenty minutes from the Charlotte airport, which is served by the Eastern, Capital and Piedmont air lines. These facilities provide convenient and rapid transportation of passen- gers, freight and express in afew hours to the great centers of the U. S. Gastonia has one landing field on the outskirts of the city and one airport, and there are two airports near Charlotte about 15 miles distant from Gastonia.

Industry cannot thrive without adequate power, and in this respect Gastonia is particularly fortunate. In close proximity to the Duke Power Co., with sev- eral of its mammoth-hydro-electric and steam auxiliary plants located in Gas- ton County, ample electric power is available at low rates. The quality of serv- ice available and the economical rates for users of electricity are highly im- portant factors in considering Gastonia as a place of residence, or for the loca- tion of a business or industry.

Natural gas is available in Gastonia through the Public Service Co. of North Carolina. This gas comes from thefields in Texas, brought by the Trans-conti- nental Pipe Line Co. The pipe line runs within 1-1/3 miles of Gastonia's city limits.

Financial Features

North Carolina has no ad valorem property tax. The City of Gastonia rate is $1. 35 per $100, and the Gaston County rate is 98ยข on $100 valuation. Municipal property is valued at over $2, 600, 000.

Gastonia has an adequate and modern water plant with clear water source. Electricity is purchased wholesale from the Duke Power Co. and retailed by the City to residential and industrial users. Users outside the city are served direct by Duke Power Co.

Closely allied with the city's favorable financial position in reference to in- dustry, there should be mentioned also North Carolina's stable government which is fair to capital, fair to labor, and possesses a sympathetic understanding of industry.

Gastonia's financial institutions, consisting of two strong national banks and two thriving building and loan institutions, afford ample facilities throughout this trade area.

INTRODUCTION

Civic Life

The moral atmosphere of any city is indicated by the facilities which it has provided for religious worship. Gastonia is a church-going city, with 92 churches representing practically all the well-known denominations-Protestant, Catho- lic and Jewish.

Gastonia is also proud of its public school system, which consists of 18 mod- ern school plants, with an enrollment of 12, 000 in the metropolitan area.

In addition to the splendid public school system, Gastonia has a vocational school operated by the Vocational Education Department of the State of North Carolina, where courses in yarn manufacturing, weaving and designing, knit- ting, mill maintenance and tailoring are offered tuition-free to North Carolina residents. Gastonia is the home of the Gaston Technical Institute, which is op- erated under the auspices of the School of Engineering of North Carolina State College. Technical courses are offered in internal combustion engines, elec- trical technology, building construction technology, and radio broadcasting. The Vocational School and the Technical Institute are valuable assets in the industrial life of the community.

Also in Gastonia is the Evans College of Commerce, and nine miles distant at Belmont, N. C., are located Belmont Abbey College and Sacred Heart Acad- emy. Belmont Abbey College has afour-year college course leading to the Bach- elor's Degree, and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Sacred Heart Academy is a junior college for girls.

Gastonia has two splendid general hospitals for white people and one for Ne- groes. In addition, there is located here the North Carolina Orthopedic Hospital, the only State-owned and State-maintained institution of its kind in the Southern States. It has provisions for inmates of both races.

Gastonia has one modern hotel and several smaller hostelries, several large apartment houses, and a number of good private boarding houses. Four modern theatres, with total seating capacity of 3, 200, afford ample amusement facilities.

The value of healthy civic clubs is thoroughly appreciated in Gastonia. Strong units of Rotary, Kiwanis, Civitan, Lions, Optimists, Altrusa and Pilot clubs are rendering valuable service to the city. An elegant club building is owned by the Gastonia Woman's Club, and the leading fraternal organizations are repre- sented. A splendid clubhouse, golf courses, swimming pools, tennis courts, parks and playgrounds afford ample opportunities for healthful recreation.

The natural advantages which induced the pioneer forefathers to locate here still exist and, with the addition of the vast industrial empire and the phenomenal growth in population, the advantages have been augmented.

The above legend is only a brief summary and contains only a few of the high-lights of the many opportunities, industrial and otherwise, that exist today in Gastonia and Gaston County. Those desiring to take advantage of the oppor- tunities offered by this hustling Piedmont city of the New South are cordially in- vited to write directly to the Chamber of Commerce at Gastonia.

For the prospective resident, Gastonia is favorably situated in many ways. While the city is located near the busy marts of trade, in less than three hours of travel by automobile a Gastonian can be in the incomparable scenery of the mountains of western North Carolina, the "Land of the Sky." In three hours he can journey to the famous Pinehurst and Southern Pines winter resorts. The famous Atlantic beaches can be reached in five hours. One night of travel will place him in most of the big Eastern cities.

Trade Area

Based on the 1950 U. S. Census, the population in a 75-mile radius of Gas- tonia is placed at approximately 2, 000, 000.

Although the trucking industry has been developing rapidly, Gaston County still imports thousands of dollars' worth of food that could be raised profitably in the county.

Opportunities

The city's industrial population challenges the farmers of the county to grow food and feed crops.
