Churches
Facilities for religious worship are an indication of the moral atmosphere of any community. Gastonia is a church- going city, with 29 churches, representing practically all the well-known denominations, Protestant, Catholic and Jewish.
Hotels
Gastonia has one modern hotel and several smaller hos- telries, several large apartment houses, and numbers of good private boarding houses.
Theatres
Gastonia has four commodious, well-equipped uptown theatres and another located in the suburbs.
Civic Clubs
The value of healthy civic clubs is thoroughly appreci- ated in Gastonia. Strong units of Rotary, Kiwanis, Civitan, Lions and Altrusa Clubs are rendering valuable service to the city.
The Gastonia Woman's Club owns an elegant club build- ing.
All the leading fraternal organizations are represented in Gastonia. Activities of the Masonic bodies center around their recently-completed Masonic Temple, a very attractive structure.

21
INTRODUCTION
A splendid clubhouse, golf course, swimming pool and tennis courts are among the attractions of the Gastonia Country Club, located one mile east of Gastonia on Wilkin- son Boulevard.
In 1931 Gastonia opened a beautiful municipal golf course.

Health
An important factor in the growth of a city is a supply of pure water. Gastonia's water supply is pure. The present water system of the city represents an investment of $922,- 043, and includes a modern filtration plant and a natural reservoir covering 75 acres of land and impounding 250,000,- 000 gallons of water.
Both the city and the county maintain a thoroughly ef- ficient health department. Meat, milk, foodstuffs, and all hotels, restaurants and other places serving food to the pub- lic are rigidly inspected.
Hospitals
Gastonia has two splendid general hospitals.
It is the site of the North Carolina Orthopaedic Hospi- tal, the only State-owned and State-maintained institution of its kind in the Southern states and one of less than a dozen such institutions in the U. S. It has provisions for inmates of both races.
Proximity to Resorts
For the prospective resident, Gastonia is favorably sit- uated in many ways. While it is located in the busy marts of trade, in less than three hours of travel by automobile a

Gastonian can be in the incomparable scenery of the Blue Ridge Mountains of western Carolina, "The Land of the Sky." In three hours he can journey easily to the famous Pinehurst and Southern Pines winter resorts. The far-famed Atlantic beaches can be reached in five to six hours. One night of travel will place him in most of the big Eastern cities.

Gastonia's Splendid Public Library
Public Library
The Gastonia Public Library, now more than twenty-five years old, entered its spacious new home in 1931. The library building is modern and attractive in every respect, and would be a credit to a city many times the size of Gas- tonia.

24
INTRODUCTION
Memorial Hall
Somewhat unusual in the South is Memorial Hall, erect- ed by the citizens of Gastonia at a cost of $75,000 as a mem- orial to deceased war veterans and for the sole and exclusive use of living veterans of all wars. The building contains a large fire-proof museum housing many interesting and valu- able war relics, a spacious auditorium, library, reading rooms, club rooms, showers, dining room, kitchen, etc. In a ma- terial way this splendid building reflects Gastonia's appre- ciation of our country's defenders.
Kings Mountain
Gastonia is only 20 miles from the historic battleground of Kings Mountain, where, on Oct. 7, 1780, the sturdy moun- tain pioneers vanquished the British forces under Ferguson and turned the tide of independence in favor of the colo- nists. This famous battleground is now one of the few na- tional military parks in the country. Gastonia is the natural point from which to visit this historic spot.

INTRODUCTION
Gaston, the County of Opportunity
While Gaston County is generally regarded as an indus- trial county, the activities of its people run along many other lines.
With an average annual rainfall of 46 inches, fertile soil and a long growing season, Gaston County is a desirable agricultural section. With its dense population affording a ready market for all types of farm products, there has been a wide diversity in the types of farming. Gaston County's population in 1930 was 78,093, an increase of 52% in the past ten years.
Although the trucking industry has been developing rapidly, Gaston still imports thousands of dollars worth of food that can profitably be raised in the county. The city's industrial population challenges the county's farmers to grow food and feed crops.
Dairying and poultry farms have made notable strides in the past few years, but the possible field of development has just begun. Gaston County would be an ideal location for a large creamery plant.
Fruit-growing has become an important item in Gaston County. No finer peaches can be grown anywhere, and an ample market is close at hand,
Cotton and corn are still the major farm products. In 1929 Gaston County produced 19,096 bales of cotton.
Gaston has the distinction of being the fourth pure-bred dairy sire county in the U. S., the first in North Carolina.
Gaston County Peach Orchard GASTON BAPTIST ASSOCIATION
26
INTRODUCTION
A game preserve of 10,000 acres for the preservation of wild animals has recently been established in the county and is now being stocked with various kinds of game. Numerous lakes and streams with large bodies of water offer delightful retreats to fishermen.
The dense population and rapid growth of this section insure a constantly-increasing demand for all kinds of farm products. In no line is the field crowded. Further investi- gation will prove both interesting and profitable.
Gaston's Other Towns
Gaston County has the distinction of having the largest number of incorporated towns of any county in the state of North Carolina, all of them centers of varied industrial activities. Below is a list of these towns, with their 1930 Census totals:
Belmont 4,121
Lowell
1,664
Bessemer City 3,739
Dallas 1,489
Cherryville
2,756
Stanley 1,084
Mt. Holly
2,254
McAdenville 914
Cramerton, though not incorporated, is an important industrial town with a population of several thousand.
This brief summary gives only a few of the highlights of the industrial opportunities that exist today in Gastonia and Gaston County. Those desiring to take advantage of the opportunities in this hustling Piedmont city of the New South are invited to write directly to the Chamber of Com- merce at Gastonia.

Stability Ao Permanency
Do you realize that a City Directory advertisement is a testimonial to the per- manency, the stability, of the advertiser?
That's the sort of concern all of us want to patronize, because we know when they sell us merchandise they are · behind it in every way, today, tomorrow, and for the years to come.
"Fly-by-night," "fire-sale" and other temporary or "get-rich-quick" concerns rarely appear in the City Direc- tory.
And it is a noteworthy fact that the concerns which advertise one year in the city directory are there again next year. 90% of directory advertising is renewed.
Directory advertising is profitable. In connection with the class- ified business headings it is doubly effective.
May we explain how and why it will pay you?
