City Directory Dont's
DON'T put your Directory in an out-of-the-way place, but keep it where your customers can see and use it without stopping someone to find it.
DON'T think that a Directory is paying for itself unless you use it, any more than an idle clerk can make you money.
DON'T look mad when a customer asks to look at your Directory.
DON'T look happy when a neighbor wants to borrow your Directory, for if you do, he will borrow it again, and if all were borrowers, when would the next Direc- tory be published ?
DON'T forget that an up-to-date city must have a Directory; and a merchant that has no Directory is what ?
DON'T forget that a Directory borrower today will forget to return it tomorrow and you will call him what ?
DON'T forget that the man who has a Directory pays for it and the borrower gets for nothing what an- other man pays for.

Our Manufacturers - How They Builded
In 82 years since High Point was incorporated in 1859 the city has been built on ground that was largely untouched wood land. The greater part of the development has occurred within the last 50 years, but it is a mistake to conclude that manufacturing is new in this state and section.
Since colonial days North Carolina has had many factories. The state was settled largely by the very types of people from whom manufacturers are recruited. They were simple, unpretentious, hard-working and thrifty folk for the most part. The natural bent of such settlers resulted in little industries here and there, starvelings for the most part because of lack of markets, but through hard work, self denial and persistence the foundation for the great industrial development in the state was laid.
HIGH POINT - A CITY WHICH DEMONSTRATES THE VALUE OF INDIVIDUAL EFFORT
In reviewing the history of High Point one cannot help noting that the builders of industry in High Point are self made men and that they did not stop because the way appeared difficult and required long hours of hard work and self denial. Raised on a farm, clerk in a store, worker in a factory, railroad clerk, school teacher, fruit tree salesman and similar jobs are shown as the way many leaders in industry started their business life. One wonders where High Point, in fact the United States would be today, had people like these not applied their will to work and save, to accept individual responsibility and with an ambition to better and money toward such development.
Money making has not been the sole aim of a large majority of these builders -there has been the desire for religious, cultural and educational development in the City as a whole which has been demonstrated by liberal contribution of time any money toward such development.
To these builders and to the skilled artisans who have joined together in the production of High Point products which are sent to all parts of the world and who have jointly built a city of which we are all proud, I take off my hat, and say that with this continued cooperation future beneficial development will be un- limited.
