Governor Daniel C. Russell, born in Brunswick County, was the son of two Onslow County natives and spent his childhood at the home of his grandfather, David W. Sander, a member of the Council of State. Governor Russell served from 1897 to 1901.
XI
INTRODUCTION
New River, despite its name, is known to be the mouth of one of the oldest rivers in America. It is the only large river in North Carolina with headwaters and mouth in the same county, Onslow, and it is one of the few rivers of any size in the United States which flows almost due South. Its three forks are also unusual in that they bring little water in to feed the main stream. Another peculiarity is that it seems to be all mouth and nothing much more. The estuary is about 20 miles long and in places three to five miles wide.
Wars have seriously affected the New River Region through their early history.
After the Indian Wars, Spanish Buccaneers and Pirates beset the region. During the Spanish invasion in the 1740's, prisoners were brought into the Onslow County Section through Bear Inlet.
Militia men were trained for the French and Indian War and for the Revolutionary conflict in the New River Area.
Onslow County residents had courageous parts in the fight for freedom and independence.
Within two years after the creation of the U. S. Marine Corps, Marines were on duty in the coastal area, being assigned to the privateer Sturdy Beggar of New Bern in 1777. They sailed against two English rigs which had arrived within the Bar on the Carolina seashore and captured several vessels.
In 1941, at the outbreak of World War II, the area around Jacksonville was again the scene of U. S. Marines on duty. Camp Lejeune was originated and named for the famous General Lejeune. Camp Lejeune is one of the world's largest amphibious training bases, covering an area of 173.8 square miles. Camp Lejeune starts a mile from the center of Jacksonville and extends to the Atlantic Ocean. The Base is a city in itself and is completely self sufficient. It has its own power plant, garbage and disposal plant, water treatment plant. Its buildings, which number in excess of 400, are permanent structures of steel, brickand concrete. It is beautifully landscaped with azaleas and native flowers. Camp Lejeune offers its visitors an unparalled view of America's defense strength in its natural scenic beauty.
AN IDEAL PLACE TO LIVE
Jacksonville can be your home while you hunt and fish in the beautiful forests, rivers, creeks and ocean that are in and border Onslow County. In our forests and plains there are bear, deer, quail, rabbit, wild turkey, duck, geese and many other game birds and animals to be found.
The City is situated on beautiful New River, which has been known by many generations as fresh water fisherman's paradise. The great game hunting reserve known as Hoffman Forest covers 80,000 acres and almost reaches the City. Coastal highway U. S. 17 runs through Jacksonville.

XII
INTRODUCTION
In New River and its creeks, and in the Atlantic Ocean, a veritable treasure of thrills and surprises await the angler with the multitude and assortment of fish to be caught -- bass, perch, trout, blues, sheephead, mullet, etc.
There are over ten miles of sand beach bordering the Atlantic Ocean, with - in easy driving distance from Jacksonville.
The city has its own recreation building which operates daily programs. There is a beautifully equipped USO Club serving the off-the-base needs of the many Marines based at Camp Lejeune.
In addition there are four modern indoor theaters and also three drive-in theaters in the area. Jacksonville also has a new modern country club with a golf course and swimming pool which was completed during 1956.

Don't Contribute to Counterfeiters KNOW YOUR MONEY!
Don't Be Fooled by Forgers KNOW YOUR ENDORSERS!
The Government never redeems counterfeit money!
1. KNOW YOUR MONEY! Study the bills you receive so as to become familiar with the workmanship on them, especially in the por- traits.
2. COMPARE a suspected bill with a genuine of the same type and denomination. Observe these things:
PORTRAIT Counterfeit-Dull, smudgy, or unnaturally white, scratchy; oval background is dark, lines irregular and broken. Portrait merges into the background.
Genuine-Stands out distinctly from the oval back- ground. Eyes appear lifelike. Back- ground is a fine screen of regular lines.
COLORED SEAL
Counterfeit-Saw-tooth points around rim are usu- ally uneven, broken off.
Genuine-Saw-tooth points around rim are even and sharp.
SERIAL NUMBERS
Counterfeit-Poorly printed, badly spaced, uneven in appearance.
Genuine-Figures firmly and evenly printed, well spaced.
PAPER Counterfeit-Generally has no silk threads, but these may be imitated by very small red and blue ink lines.
Genuine-Printed on distinctive paper in which very small red and blue silk threads are scat- tered. The silk threads are not always noticeable on bills that are badly soiled or worn.
3. RUBBING a bill on a piece of paper will not prove it is genuine or counterfeit: ink can be rubbed from good bills as well as bad ones.
4. CONSULT an experienced money-handler or police officer to make sure, if you are still in doubt, whether a bill is genuine or coun- terfeit.
5. REMEMBER, NOT ALL. STRANGERS ARE COUNTER- FEITERS. BUT ALL COUNTERFEITERS ARE LIKELY TO BE STRANGERS.
This information is reprinted from the U. S. Secret Service 32-page booklet, "KNOW YOUR MONEY", which tells how to detect counterfeit coins and bills and how to guard against losses from forged Government checks. Copies may be purchased for 10c each, or $7.50 per 100. from the Superintendent of Docu- ments. Government Printing Office, Washington, D. C.

PLEASE! Do Not Lend Your CITY DIRECTORY
IT COSTS YOU MONEY-Every Time it Is Loaned
The practice of lending your City Directory, in a great measure, is responsible for the increasing cost of Directory Service.
The reason is :-
There is a definite cost involved in the making of the DIRECTORY of Your City.
THIS COST MUST BE ABSORBED BY THE SUBSCRIBERS-BE THEY ONE-OR BE THEY 1000.
If there were but ONE SUBSCRIBER to the CITY DIRECTORY-THE ONE SUBSCRIBER would of necessity have to absorb THE WHOLE COST.
If there were 100 SUBSCRIBERS-each one would have to absorb 1/100tl PART OF THE WHOLE COST.
If there were 1000 SUBSCRIBERS-each one would have to absorb 1/1000th PART OF THE WHOLE COST.
From which it is obvious that the GREATER the number of subscribers -the LESSER. the cost to each.
And
It is also obvious that the LESSER the number of subscribers-the GREATER the cost to each.
Every time you loan your City Directory the LESS NECESSITY THERE IS FOR THE BORROWER TO SUBSCRIBE FOR THE SERVICE.
MORE BORROWERS result in FEWER SUBSCRIBERS which means INCREASED COST.
