The rule of the "Golden-Leaf" has been afruitful one, for $34,500, - 795 poured into the farmers' purses as the result of sales on the Kinston market in 1960. Kinston's twelve tobacco warehouses provide ample sales space and facilities to accommodate more than 100,000,000 pounds of to- bacco. Such a return from a single phase of the agriculture life of Kin- ston's "settlement" area, when boosted by the progress and return from the variety of other phases, has been reflected sharply in its growth.

Following the establishment of a thriving market, tobacco-proces- sing factories were built, and have taken their place among numerous other industrial establishments to make the river-bank trading post a center of economic wealth. Within the boundaries of Kinston, with its many miles of broad, paved streets, are located producers of clothing and other textiles, building materials and various types of consumer goods.

Auction Scene from One of Kinston's Twelve Tobacco Warehouses

A network of improved highways lead out of Kinston into the Coastal Plain like the spokes of a wheel and two railroads provide carrier facili- ties of heavy goods and shipments. Electric power, with newly-added equipment and facilities, is available to the city's residential and indus- trial needs and is more than 40% above the peak demand at present. There are 50 manufacturing and processing firms located in the city, with six- teen large wholesale distributors, and over 500 retail stores and service institutions, all banded together to serve the requirements of the ever- growing population.

The economic soundness of Kinston can be attested by the three thriving banks, two having branches including a drive-in bank, which serves its citizens and its business life. Surveys have shown a steadily- mounting check-clearance volume in the banks for a number of years. The solvency of the City government is shown by the ready sale, at all times, of the municipal bonds for street and utility improvements and for the construction of permanent municipal improvements.

INTRODUCTION

Lenoir Memorial Hospital-County Owned and Operated

The physical well-being of the city, and its citizens is no less sound than any other part of its life. With the location 70 miles from the coast on North Carolina's temperate plains, the weather-wet or dry, hot or cold-is one of the most healthful. Here, it is not a matter of how many days the sun shines each year, but whether it shines in proper proportion to the rainfall. The abundance and value of farm crops grown in the im- mediate vicinity is proof of ideal weather and climate.

Two modern hospitals, staffed by some of the country's most emi- nent physicians, surgeons and specialists, are here to serve the citizens of the area. More than 40 doctors and dentists reside and practice in the city, thereby making Kinston the medical center of eastern North Caro- lina. A well-organized public health program is carried on at all times to make for cleanliness and the eradication and treatment of disease.

XIV

INTRODUCTION

New City Hall, Completed in 1962

The Caswell Training School, the State's largest institution for the care of the mentally retarded and deficient, is located near the city. Kinston has a large modern library, with three branches and a mobile unit cir- culating 500,000 books and library materials annually. The library cir- culates, besides books, educational films and musical recordings and also sponsors Great Books discussion groups.

Kinston has the unique distinction of a perpetual artesian water sup- ply coming from deep wells that provide water of the purest content east of the Rocky Mountains and is entirely untreated. The supply is unlimited for industrial and commercial use, as well as for home consumption.

Kinston citizens are friendly people, ever anxious to share their goods or services with the stranger within the city's gates. Kinston ex- tends a cordial invitation to homeseekers, industrialists, retail traders, and men and women of all vocations to come here for a day, a year, or a lifetime.

-thus assuring you the ultimate service that skill and care can produce in the way of City Directories or other reference media, and providing protection against fraudulent advertising schemes which operate under the name of Directories.

The following "Standards of Practice," adopted at the inception of the Association of North American Directory Publishers in 1898, and strictly ad- hered to over the years, is your guarantee of satisfactory Directory service.

The publisher of a Directory should dedicate his best efforts to the cause of business uplift and social service, and to this end pledges him- self :

1. To consider, first, the interest of the user of the book.

2. To subscribe to and work for truth, honesty and accuracy in all departments.

3. To avoid confusing duplication of listings, endeavoring to classify every concern under the one head- ing that best describes it, and to treat additional listings as advertis- ing, to be charged for at regular rates.

4. To increase public knowledge of what Directories contain; to study public needs and make Directories to supply them; to revise and stand- ardize methods and classifications, so that what is wanted may be most easily found, and the Directory be made to serve its fullest use as a

business and social reference book and director of buyer and seller.

5. To decline any advertisement which has a tendency to mislead or which does not conform to business integrity.

6. To solicit subscriptions and advertising solely upon the merits of the publications.

7. To avoid misrepresentation by statement or inference regarding cir- culation, placing the test of reference publicity upon its accessibility to seekers, rather than on the number of copies sold.

8. To co-operate with approved organizations and individuals en- gaged in creative advertising work.

9. To avoid unfair competition.

10. To determine what is the highest and largest function of Directories in public service, and then to strive in every legitimate way to promote that function.

$100 Reword will be poid by the Association of North American Directory Publishers for the arrest and canviction af any person ar persons engoged in the publishing, collecting or convassing for any fraudulent or foke directaries.

IV. Tell customers what they want to know - what they have a right to know and ought to know about what is offered so that they may buy wisely and obtain the maximum satisfaction from their purchases.

v. Be prepared and willing to make good as pro- mised and without quibble on any guarantee offered.

VI. Be sure that the normal use of merchandise ar services offered will not be hazardous to public health or life.

VII. Reveal material facts, the deceptive conceal- ment of which might cause consumers to be misled.

VIII. Advertise and sell merchandise or service on its merit and refrain from attacking your competitors or reflecting unfairly upan their products, services, or methods of doing business.

x. Avoid all tricky devices and schemes such as deceitful trade-in allowances, fictitious list prices, false and exaggerated camparative prices, bait adver- tising, misleading free offers, fake sales and similar practices which prey upon human ignarance and gullibility.
