INTRODUCTION

Danced all Night

Old Laurinburg school had its ups and downs and was closed at intervals. But it was used throughout its career for community events, such as the celebration of completion of the railroad to the community. On this occasion, the cele- brants danced all night. The building was sold in 1863 to A. P. Gage, a northern educator and author of Gage's Physics, a textbook. Charles Smith had the school in the 70's, and the notable Prof. Quackenbush succeeded him.

Colin Lindsay

In the old Stewartsville Cemetery between Laurinburg and Johns is the grave of one of the most colorful preachers to come out of the Presbyterian Church. Colin Lindsay was born in Scotland, commissioned by the High Kirk of Scotland, and came to America in 1792, assuming the pastorate of Black River Church in what is now Sampson County. A forceful man with decided opinions, he got into numerous rows with his flock. They charged him with using profane and violent lang- uage (like "liar," "villain," and "traitor,"), with breaking the Sabbath, and indulging too freely in spiritous liquors. Once he threatened to thrash an elder of his church (a thought which would probably not horrify many a present day minis- ter), and firmly denounced the popular wave of evangelistic revivalism as the "work of the devil." These and the like charges kept Rev. Lindsay on the move from church to church, his last pastorate being Bethel Church in upper Robeson. He spent the last years of his life on a modest estate near Turn- pike Bridge in Scotland County.

Such a turbulent career may have been partly influenced by the unusual circumstances of his birth. Before Colin Lind- say was born, his mother passed into a death-like coma. Her husband thought she had departed this earth, and arranged an impressive funeral with relatives coming from far and wide to celebrate the wake with much feasting and drinking. The body was deposited in the family vault a few hundred yards from the homestead. Returning from the cemetery, two stal- wart Scots, still in a somewhat exalted mood because of too much friendliness with John Barleycorn, began bragging about each other's courage. One finally dared the other to go back to the vault and lay one of the long transporting poles along- side the coffin. The challenge was promptly accepted, and the darer followed to see that all terms of the contract were fulfilled. As they neared the vault, they observed two men suddenly emerge from it and run off as fast as they could. The two friends slowly approached the coffin and found to their amazement that it had been opened. The lady's ring finger had been cut off for the sake of the jewelry and was bleeding. Not at all dead, Mrs. Lindsay was carried back to her family by the now thoroughly sober braggarts. She regained her health completely and several years later bore her tempestuous son, Colin.

Temperance Hall

Established in 1855, the society first met at Spring Hill Academy, but by 1860 had its own building, now restored and open for Sunday visitors. Members who violated the temper-

INTRODUCTION

ance pledge were fined five dollars for the first offence and were expelled on the second.

The membership was represented by stars painted on the ceiling: a gold star for the living, a white one for the deceased. Books were loaned and compositions assigned. Topics of cur- rent or philosophical interest were debated in the little octag- onal hall. Some of the more interesting conclusions were: to denounce the Scotch Fair because of the carousing that went on there; that an agricultural society would benefit the com- munity; that the most valuable professions were in order: teaching, printing, blacksmithing, farming, moulding, and tailoring. A resolution at the beginning of the Civil War read, "May each man return, moral and upright as he now is."

A break in the records is followed by the words, "After considerable interruption, caused by an unwelcome visit of Sherman's army, the Society met again and marshalled out their little band with three cheers for temperance and litera- ture."

The restored meeting house stands across from Spring Hill Cemetery about 11% miles west of Wagram. Anybody in town will be glad to direct you to this fascinating landmark. John Charles McNeill is buried in the cemetery there, and memor- ial gardens have been planned to further beautify the site.

thus assuring you the zati mate service that skill and care can produce in the way of City Directories or other reference media, and providing pro- tection against fraudulent advertising schemes which operate under the name of Directories.

The following "Standards of Practice," adopted at the inception of the Association of North American Directory Publishers in 1898, and strictly ad- hered to over the years, is your guarantee of satisfactory Directory Service.

The publisher of a Directory should dedicate his best efforts to the cause of business uplift and social service, and to this end pledges himself:

1. To consider, first. the interest of the user of the book.

2. To subscribe to and work for truth, honesty and accuracy in all departments.

3. To avoid confusing duplication of listings, endeavoring to classify every concern under the one head- ing that best _escribes it, and to treat additional listings as advertis- ing, to be charged for at regular rates.

4. To increase public knowledge of what Directories contain; to study public needs and make Direc- tories to supply them, to revise and standardize methods and classifica- tions, so that what is wanted may be most easily found, and the Direc- tory be made to serve its fullest use

as a business and social reference book and director of buyer and seller.

5. To decline any advertisement which has a tendency to mislead or which does not conform to business integrity.

6. To solicit subscriptions and ad- vertising solely upon the merits of the publications.

7. To avoid misrepresentation by statement or inference regarding circulation, placing the test of refer- ence publicity upon its accessibility to seekers, rather than on the num- ber of copies sold.

8. To co-operate with approved organization and individual- en- gaged in creative advertising work.

9. To avoid unfair competition.

10. To determine what is the highest and largest function of Directories in public service, and then to strive in every legitimate way to promote .hat .unction.

$100 Reward will be paid by the Association of North American Directory Publishers for the arrest and conviction of any person or persons engaged in the publishing, collecting or canvassing for anv fraudulent or fake directories.

The importance of keeping firm and product names in the public eye is recognized by all business men. It is astonishing to see how a firm or product, however meritorious, will slip into the limbo of the forgotten if not persistently advertised.

The City Directory is the natural medium for keep- ing a business or product name in the spotlight. Insist on being well represented in its pages.
