St. Mary's School and Junior College, operated by the Episcopal Church of the Carolinas, was founded in 1842. The highest standards are maintained, with all academic courses fully accredited by the South- ern Association. The annual sessions offer the students 35 weeks of classroom work. An average of twenty states are represented in annual enrollment, which, in 1941-1942, was 290 resident, day and special students.

INTRODUCTION
Peace, a junior college for women, owned by the Presbyterians of North Carolina, was opened in 1872. It offers standard and general junior college courses, college preparatory course, and special courses in art, music, home economics and commercial subjects. A number of modern buildings have been added recently, and the enrollment has grown rapidly. In 1941-42 it was 275.
The North Carolina School for the White Blind was established by legislative enactment in 1845. The present plant was completed in 1923 at a cost of $1,300,000. It is a standard high school and the only one of its type in the U. S. with this rating. It specializes in vocational training.
The well-equipped and modern public school system of Raleigh has 17 buildings, including two high schools. There are also three parochial schools.
King's Business College, Hardbarger's Secretarial School, Hoyle's Secretarial School, and Raleigh School of Commerce are well-organized colleges here for business training.
St. Augustine's College (Episcopal) for colored men and women was opened in 1868. It includes the Bishop Tuttle School and the St. Agnes Training School for Nurses. It has 110 acres of land in the northeast section of the city. St. Agnes Hospital is operated in conjunction with this institution.
The State School for the Negro Deaf and Dumb was established in 1868. A new plant erected at a cost of $250,000, is located on Highway No. 70, three miles southeast of the city.
Shaw University, founded in 1865, is the oldest institution in the South for the education of colored men and women. The university has 11 buildings. Degrees of A. B. and B. S. are conferred.

STATE CAPITOL BUILDING-Located head Fayetteville St., is considered one of the seven perfect pieces of Doric architecture in the world. Monuments and public memorials on Capitol Square: Senator Z. B. Vance, Gov. Charles B. Aycock, Dr. Charles D. McIver, Henry L. Wyatt, Worth Bagley, George Washington, Women of the Confederacy.
STATE LIBRARY, SUPREME COURT ROOM-Located in State Library building, on E. Morgan St. (Open 9:00 A. M. to 5:00 P. M. Closes at 1:00 P. M. Saturdays during summer.)

DRAMA CENTER-The Drama Center is located on Pogue St. near State College. It embodies an amphitheatre, which seats 3,000 people, and a Little Theatre building, which seats 300.
STATE ART GALLERIES-The North Carolina State Art Society Galleries are located in the Library Building across from the Capitol on Morgan St. The Galleries maintain changing exhibitions of contem- porary painting, and display the Phifer Collection, a group of art works left to the State Art Society by the late Robert Phifer, of Concord, N. C. The State Art Galleries are open Monday through Friday from 9:00 A. M. to 5:00 P. M., and on Saturday from 9:00 A. M. to 1:00 P. M.
