GENERAL VIEW
Raleigh is conveniently located on the main highways between the North and South, in the east-central portion of the state, in rolling country, on the fringe of that section of the Carolinas often referred to as the Piedmont.
Raleigh offers many attractions to the person interested in sports. There are four golf courses, a country club, swimming pools, riding trails. The streams and ponds surrounding Raleigh offer a variety of fishing material. The city is conveniently located to the famous fishing and hunting centers of the coastal section.
Raleigh has fifteen hotels serving upwards of 60,000 guests yearly. The rates are reasonable.
Whether one is looking for a central point for distribution, for head- quarters or branch-office location, or for some quiet and peaceful place to spend his declining years, Raleigh will have something about it that will please. The town is one of the beauty spots of the state. In Raleigh's business section one will find Colonial architecture surrounded by modern office bulldings. Throughout the city are quaint remnants of the old South, interspersed with the modern design of the new South. The people are friendly, courteous and hospitable. Regardless of what one expects of a home town, he will find that everything in Raleigh will fascinate him.

INTRODUCTION
HISTORIC RALEIGH
Raleigh abounds in historic eminence and noteworthy tradition. The first English settlement in America was made at Roanoke Island on the coast of North Carolina by Sir Walter Raleigh. The capital city of the state was named in his honor and in memory of this achievement.
The land upon which Raleigh had its beginning was purchased in 1792 as a location for the establishment of the state capital. The first capitol building was completed in 1794 and destroyed by fire in 1831. The present building, over 100 years old, is a recognized example of Doric architecture with few equals. It is noted for its beauty and design.
The 17th President of the U. S., Andrew Johnson, was born here. This famous old home now stands as a shrine in Pullen Park.
The State Hall of History here, with its collection of North Carolina historical records and important archives, attracts much interest.
Wakefield, the home of Joel Lane, erected in 1760, is owned and pre- served by the Carolina Dames. This Colonial home was erected in the old town of Bloomsbury, which was the county seat of Wake County, in 1771.
The oldest bank building in North Carolina still stands on the property of Christ Church. It is the present rectory. It was huilt in 1795 as the State Bank.
Many visitors in Raleigh are likewise interested in monuments and memorials of famous North Carolinians on Capitol Square and in State department buildings.
Three points of special beauty in Raleigh are Dix Hill, Country Club, and the Federal Cemetery.
A CENTER OF EDUCATION
Raleigh, with six colleges and an excellent public school system, has long been recognized as an outstanding center of education.

There are 45 major buildings in the plant. It had an enrollment-constantly growing-of 3,229 in 1945-46. It embraces three schools-Agriculture and Forestry, Engineering and Textile. Also Division of Teacher Education and Basic Division of the College.

The following "Standards of Practice," adopted at the inception of the Association of North American Directory Publishers in 1898, and strictly ad- hered to over the years, is your guarantee of satisfactory Directory Service.
The publisher of a Directory should dedicate his best efforts to the cause of business uplift and social service, and to this end pledges himself:
1. To consider, first, the interest of the user of the book.
2. To subscribe to and work for truth, honesty and accuracy in all departments.
3. To avoid confusing duplication of listings, endeavoring to classify every concern under the one head- ing that best describes it, and to treat additional listings as advertis- ing, to be charged for at regular rates.
4. To increase public knowledge of what Directories contain; to study public needs and make Direc- tories to supply them; to revise and standardize methods and classifica- tions, so that what is wanted may be most easily found, and the Direc- tory be made to serve its fullest use
as a business and social reference book and director of buyer and seller
5. To decline any advertisement which has a tendency to mislead or which does not conform to business integrity.
6. To solicit subscriptions and ad- vertising solely upon the merits of the publications.
7. To avoid misrepresentation by statement or inference regarding circulation, placing the test of refer- ence publicity upon its accessibility to seekers, rather than on the num- ber of copies sold.
8. To co-operate with approved organization and individuals en- gaged in creative advertising work.
9. To avoid unfair competition.
10. To determine what is the highest and largest function of Directories in public service, and then to strive in every legitimate way to promote that function.
