INTRODUCTION
St. Mary's School and Junior College is owned by the Episcopal church of the Carolinas. The highest standards are maintained with all academic courses fully accredited by the Southern Association. The annual sessions offer the student thirty-five weeks of classroom work. An average of twenty states are represented in annual enrollments.
Peace, a junior Presbyterian college for girls, was opened in 1872. It offers special courses in arts, sciences, music and expression. A number of new and up-to-date buildings have been added in the past three years and the enrollment has grown rapidly.
The North Carolina School for the White Blind was es- tablished by legislative enactment in 1845. The present plant was completed in 1923 at a cost of $1,300,000. It is a standard high school and the only one of its type in the U. S. with this rating. It specializes in vocational training.
The well-equipped and up-to-date public school system of Raleigh has 18 buildings, including two high schools. In the past ten years bond issues totaling $2,300,000 have been voted to provide new buildings.
A recently-organized school of arts known as the South- ern School of Creative Arts is located here.
Shaw University, founded in 1865, is the oldest institu- tion in the South for the education of colored men and women. The University has 11 buildings. Degrees of A. B. and B. S. are conferred.
King's Business College and Hardbarger's Secretarial School are two well-organized colleges for business training. King's Business College is headquarters for a group of similar business colleges in North Carolina and Virginia.
St. Augustine College (Episcopal) for colored men and women was opened in 1868. It has 110 acres of land in the northeast section of the city. St. Agnes Hospital is operated in conjunction with this institution.
The State School for the Negro Deaf and Dumb was es- tablished in 1868. A new plant, erected at the cost of $250,000, is located on Highway No. 10, three miles southeast of the city.
Raleigh's Commercial Advantages
Raleigh is both a distributing and trading center for a large territory. It is neither east nor west in North Carolina. It stands at the crossroads logically situated to serve econ- omically a wide area, with ease of access to the industrial Piedmont and to the agricultural East.
Its rapid development as a wholesale center is empha- . sized by the fact that there are 76 such establishments here, doing an annual business of $22,000,000. For the same reason that it is a good wholesale center, it is also rapidly increas- ing as a location for headquarters offices to serve both this and adjoining states.
Nine modern fireproof office buildings provide more than 1,000 offices.
Raleigh's importance as a retail shopping center is shown by the fact that this volume of business in 1929 was $23,401,- 823 (U. S. Census); 572 retail establishments, and 2,417 em- ployees. This trade is drawn from an area extending 25 to 50 miles, embracing a population of 650,000. It has a potential trade territory of twenty-nine counties. Raleigh has many fine stores offering a wide variety of merchandise.

INTRODUCTION
One of the city's greatest assets is its transportation fa- cilities. It has the advantage of having three separate rail- roads-it is located on the main line of the Seaboard Air Line from New York to Florida; on the Southern, connecting with its main line from New York to New Orleans, and on the main line of the Norfolk Southern. Twenty passenger trains pass in and out of the city every twenty-four hours. With its central geographical location, it is important to the manu- facturing cities of the North and East. Six bus lines operate in and out of Raleigh. The owners of these lines and points they cover are as follows: Southerland Bros. Bus Line from Washington, N. C., to Raleigh. Coastal Coach Co. from Nor- folk, Va., to Raleigh. East Coast Stages, with headquarters in Raleigh, operating between Washington, D. C., and Charles- ton, S. C. The Atlantic Greyhound Lines, with headquarters at Charleston, W. Va., operating from Richmond, Va., through Raleigh to Charleston, S. C. The Richmond Greyhound Lines, with headquarters in Richmond, operating from Washington, D. C., to Raleigh. The Carolina Coach Co., with headquarters in Raleigh, operating between Raleigh and Norfolk two routes, Raleigh and Charlotte two routes, and Raleigh and Washington, N. C., Raleigh and Fayetteville, N. C., and Dur- ham and Chapel Hill, N. C. These lines and their connections cover the entire state on convenient and regular schedules. There are 2,000 miles of hardsurfaced roads within a hun- dred-mile radius.
Raleigh is the headquarters of the Carolina Power and Light Co., which supplies current to 235 cities and towns in North and South Carolina. The rates in Raleigh and com- munities served by this company are in line with the lowest obtained in the South, and for large consumers very attrac- tive rates are offered. Over a ten-year period the Carolina Power and Light Co. has developed its electric horse-power from 47,000 to 340,000.
Gas is supplied by the Raleigh Gas Co., offering a splen- did service and reasonable rates. The number of consumers is 3,800.
The city water pumping capacity is 7,000,000 gallons per day (24 hours) and the consumption is 3,002,322 gallons. Many improvements have been made to provide an adequate supply for present and future needs, including new pumping station, reservoir, filtration plant and water lines.
Raleigh is an insurance center. It is the home office of four insurance companies, all of which are rapidly growing. These companies are the Durham Life Insurance Co., Occi- dental Life Insurance Co., North Carolina Home Insurance Co. (fire), and the Atlantic Fire Insurance Co. Many of the large insurance companies of the country, including fire, life, health and casualty companies, maintain headquarters or general state agencies in Raleigh. There are 786 officers and employees in the insurance companies here. The annual pay- roll is $1,396,200.
The city is in the center of a rich farming country, pro- ducing a great variety of crops, including corn, cotton, small grain, tobacco and truck. The Department of Commerce shows the value of farms in Wake County to be $23,704,963. This is the second highest in the state. An adjoining county with a farm value of $25,777,998 leads the state.
What to See in Raleigh
As a center for tourists during the winter months, Ra- leigh, located at the forks of two national highways, has
14
INTRODUCTION
become a city of prime importance. Some indication of this is reflected in the hotel registration, which averages from 40,000 to 50,000 during the winter months. The city abounds in historic traditions, and the thousands of visitors enjoy the following places of interest: Historic old State Capitol Build- ing, famous for the beauty of its architecture; State Museum and Temporary State Art Museum; State Hall of History; four famous colleges: North Carolina State College of Agri- culture and Engineering, Meredith College, Peace, and St. Mary's; President Andrew Johnson's Birthplace (in Pullen Park, near State College); four points of special beauty: Christ Church, Dix Hill, Country Club, Federal Cemetery; Carolina Pines, a well-known recreational center, located two miles south of Raleigh on Federal Highway 401; Govern- or's Mansion and Grounds; Public Libraries: State Library and Olivia Raney Library (with children's section), open to public all day; Institutions for Negroes: Shaw University and St. Augustine's College.
Monuments and public memorials on Capitol Square and in State Department buildings include a replica of Houdon's famous statue of George Washington, and memorials to the following North Carolinians; Senator Z. B. Vance, Governor Charles B. Aycock, Dr. Chas. D. McIver, Henry L. Wyatt, Worth Bagley, "O. Henry," and Chief Justice Ruffin.
Industry and Income
Raleigh has 41 industries with a capital investment of $4,105,400, and the annual output amounts to $4,190,799. There are 905 workers in these plants and the annual payroll is $1,054,430 (U. S. Census figures). In addition, and related to industrial pursuits, there are 1,624 persons employed in other than manufacturing industries and the combined payroll for this group is $2,496,714. This classification includes public utilities, railroads, highway repair depot and other industrial workers. Five hundred and forty-one officers and teachers are employed in the colleges within the city of Raleigh, with a total annual payroll of $1,040,608.
The largest group payroll in Raleigh is in the North Car- olina State Departments and Institutions, where there are 2,054 employees, receiving annual salaries amounting to $2,- 371,374.
The 786 employees of the insurance companies located here, including the home companies and branch offices, re- ceive $1,396,200 annually in salaries.
A summary of the groups indicated makes a total of 5,910 employees and an annual payroll of $8,359,326.
Raleigh is interested to secure additional industries. One particular factor highly favorable to this proposed ex- pansion is the electric power resources in this section. The Carolina Power & Light Co., with headquarters here, has three hydro-electric plants and one steam plant to serve this territory.
Raleigh-A Good Place to Live
Raleigh is a modern city of the new South, which com- bines old Southern charm with present-day enterprise and progressiveness.
Raleigh is recognized as one of the best cities for resi- dence in the Southeast, offering an exceptionally wide va- riety of recreational advantages. The Carolina Country Club
15
INTRODUCTION
has a splendid 18-hole golf course. Raleigh also has a new public 18-hole golf course.
Carolina Pines, a new recreational and resort develop- ment of unusual merit, located at Raleigh, is attracting con- siderable interest and patronage. A large investment in recreational facilities, including an 18-hole golf course, rid- ing academy, lake, boys' and girls' camps, and tennis courts, have been provided for the use of the public. The equipment includes a hotel, clubhouse, gymnasium and two up-to-date eating places.
There are four well-equipped picture houses.
Raleigh is exceptionally well provided for in hotels. There are six hotels, with a capacity of 1,005 rooms. This in- cludes such hotels as the Sir Walter, Carolina, Bland, Raleigh, Mansion Park and Wright.
Raleigh is recognized as the convention city of North Carolina. This is substantially borne out in the fact that this city entertained 60 state and interstate conventions and meetings during 1933.
The five luncheon clubs of the city and the Woman's Club, a civic organization, contribute to the fine community spirit here. These organizations are: Rotary, Lions, Kiwanis, Civitan, and Business and Professional Women's Club.
Raleigh is beautifully situated. Its climate is equable. Its broad and beautiful streets seem to have been laid out with foreknowledge of an automobile age. It is a wholesome, dem- ocratic city where the wealth and prestige of no one man or family dominates the rest, but where the enterprise and progressiveness of the mass of its business and professional men are making the city great and will make it yet greater.
Chamber of Commerce
The Raleigh Chamber of Commerce is a substantial, well-organized and representative body. The membership co- operates in a wide variety of activities in commercial devel- opment. A function of particular importance is the informa- tion service. Inquiries are given careful and prompt consid- eration, and visitors are always welcomed.
