Its rapid development as a wholesale center is empha- sized by the fact that there are 72 such establishments here doing an annual business of $22,000,000. For the same reason that it is a good wholesale center, it is also rapidly increas- ing as a location for headquarters offices to serve both this and adjoining states.
Nine large, modern fireproof office buildings provide more than 1,000 offices.
One of the city's greatest assets is its transportation facilities. It has the advantage of having three separate railroads-it is located on the main line of the Seaboard Air Line from New York to Florida, on the Southern connecting with its main line from New York to New Orleans, and the main line of the Norfolk Southern. Twenty-six passenger trains pass in and out of the city every twenty-four hours. With its central geographical location, it is important to
the manufacturing cities of the North and East. The Caro- lina Coach Co. and the Greyhound Lines operate 98 buses in and out of the city daily. These lines and their connec- tions cover the entire state on convenient and regular schedules, as well as providing service to many points north and south. There are 2,000 miles of hard-surfaced roads within a hundred-mile radius.
Raleigh is the headquarters of the Carolina Power & Light Co., which supplies current to 240 cities and towns in North Carolina and South Carolina. The rates in Raleigh and other communities served by this company are in line with the lowest obtained in the South, and for large con- sumers very attractive rates are offered. Over a ten-year
18
INTRODUCTION
period the Carolina Power & Light Co. has increased its electric horsepower of generating capacity from 120,000 to 333,000.
Gas is supplied by the Raleigh Gas Co., offering a splen- did service and reasonable rates. The number of consumers is 3,799.
The city water pumping capacity is 7,000,000 gallons per day (24 hours), and the consumption is 3,002,322 gallons. Many improvements have been made to provide an adequate supply for present and future needs, including a new pump- ing station, reservoir, filtration plant and water lines.
Raleigh is an insurance center. It is the home office of four insurance companies, all of which are rapidly growing. These companies are the Durham Life Insurance Co., Occi- dental Life Insurance Co., North Carolina Home Insurance Co. (fire), and the Atlantic Fire Insurance Co. Many of the larger insurance companies of the country, including fire, life, health and casualty companies, maintain headquarters or general state agencies in Raleigh. There are 786 officers and employees in the insurance companies here. The annual payroll is $1,396,200.
The city is in the center of a rich farming country, pro- ducing a great variety of crops, including corn, cotton, small grain, tobacco and truck. The Department of Commerce shows the value of farms in Wake County to be $20,140,000. It ranks among the few highest in the state. An adjoining county, Johnston, with a farm value of $22,925,000, leads the state.
What to See in Raleigh
As a center for tourists during the winter months, Raleigh, located at the forks of two national highways, has become a city of prime importance. Some indication of this is reflected in the hotel registration, which averages from 35,000 to 50,000 during the fall, winter and spring months. The city abounds in historic traditions, and the thousands of visitors enjoy the following places of interest-Historic old State Capitol Building, famous for the beauty of its architecture; State Museum and Temporary Art Museum; State Hall of History; four famous colleges: North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering, Meredith Col- lege, Peace and St. Mary's; President Andrew Johnson's Birthplace (in Pullen Park, near State College); four points of special beauty: Christ Church; Dix Hill, Country Club and Federal Cemetery; Carolina Pines, a well-known recreational center, located two miles south of Raleigh on Federal High- way No. 15A; Governor's Mansion and Grounds; public li- braries: State Library, Raney Library (with children's sec- tion), open to public all day; institutions for Negroes: Shaw University and St. Augustine's College.
Monuments and public memorials on Capitol Square and in State Department buildings include a replica of Houdon's famous statue of George Washington, and me- morials to the following North Carolinians: Senator Z. B. Vance, Governor Charles B. Aycock, Dr. Charles D. McIver, Henry L. Wyatt, Worth Bagley, "O. Henry" and Chief Justice Ruffin.
Raleigh-A Good Place to Live
Raleigh is a city of the new South, which combines old Southern charm with modern enterprise and progressive- ness.
19
INTRODUCTION
Raleigh is recognized as one of the best cities of resi- dence in the Southeast, offering an exceptionally wide vari- ety of recreational advantages. The Carolina Country Club has a splendid 18-hole golf course. The Raleigh Golf Associa- tion also has a well-developed public 18-hole golf course. Carolina Pines, a recreational and resort development, is located near Raleigh. It has an 18-hole golf course and other recreation facilities. The equipment includes a hotel, club- house and two first-class eating places.
There are four well-equipped and up-to-date picture houses.
Raleigh is exceptionally well cared for in hotels. There are ten hotels, with a capacity of 1,097 rooms. This includes such hotels as the Sir Walter, Carolina, Bland, Raleigh and Mansion Park.
Raleigh is recognized as the convention city of North Carolina. This is substantially borne out in the fact that this city entertains an annual average of 50 state and inter- state conventions and meetings.
The six luncheon clubs of the city and the Woman's Club, a civic organization, contribute to the fine community spirit here. These organizations are: Rotary, Lions, Kiwanis, Civitan, Exchange and Business and Professional Women's clubs. The Raleigh Junior Chamber of Commerce co-operates in civic enterprise.
Raleigh is beautifully situated. Its climate is equable. Its broad and beautiful streets seem to have been laid out with foreknowledge of an automobile age. It is a wholesome, democratic city where the wealth and prestige of no one man or no one family dominate the rest, but where the en- terprise and progressiveness of the great mass of the busi- ness and professional men are making the city great and will make it yet greater.
Chamber of Commerce
The Raleigh Chamber of Commerce is a substantial well- organized and representative body. The membership co- operates in a wide variety of activities in commercial devel- opment. A function of particular importance is the infor- mation service. Inquiries are given careful and prompt con- sideration and visitors always welcomed.
