Red Cross Chapter
The Rocky Mount Chapter of the American Red Cross is an organization of which the people of this community are very proud. It has given to the people of Rocky Mount and Nash County flour and clothing to the amount of $13,993.88. This assistance was given to 4,736 families.
15
INTRODUCTION
Through the Red Cross work, Rocky Mount has the fol- lowing qualified in first-aid and kindred instruction: Fif- teen first-aid teachers and examiners; three hundred thirty first-aid workers (completed fifteen-hour course); one hun- dred seventy-two home hygiene and care of the sick work- ers (completed thirty-hour course) ; five life-saving instruc- tors and examiners; twenty-two senior life-savers; sixty- five junior life-savers; one hundred fifty-five beginners and swimmers; five hundred seventeen persons qualified to take care of an emergency until medical assistance can be se- cured; 247 capable of saving themselves and others from drowning, as well as doing artificial respiration-a total of 764 trained individuals, a valuable asset to any community. Two hundred fifty volunteer workers made 995 garments from cloth furnished by the American Red Cross and these garments were delivered to the needy of this community.
Boy Scouts of America
Rocky Mount is a part of the Eastern Carolina Council of the Boy Scouts of America, with an active district board headed by men who are enthusiastic Scouters. There are six troops under the leadership of well-trained scout masters.
Welfare and Charity
Rocky Mount has a well-organized Associated Charities board, with full-time welfare worker and an able staff of assistants.
Salvation Army
Rocky Mount has a well-organized corps of Salvation Army workers, and this organization does a very fine and constructive work throughout the city and community.
Safety Council
Rocky Mount has recently organized a Class B Safety Council, and the work of this organization is beginning to be felt in a very large way. It is divided into four groups with a chairman at the head of each group-street and highway safety, safety in homes and schools, industrial safety and fire prevention.
Rocky Mount's steady growth has made it necessary for a definite policy of fire department extension, and Fire Sta- tion No. 2, with standard equipment, has recently been com- pleted and is now a part of the fire department equipment of the city. The rigid restrictions on buildings in the fire district, which comprises the entire business part of the city, has, it is believed, been directly responsible for the ab- sence of large fires in recent years, and a big loss by fire is, so far, unknown to the city.
Rocky Mount has three splendid hospitals, all on the accredited list of the American College of Surgeons and having on their staffs surgeons of wide reputation. Special- ists for practically all diseases make these hospitals their headquarters, and patients from a wide area come here for treatment. Two of these hospitals have modern training schools for nurses, and their graduates are accepted by all practicing physicians and surgeons. The other hospital, the Division Hospital for the Atlantic Coast Line, employs only registered nurses.
To prospective homeseekers and to individual citizens, Rocky Mount offers every factor that makes for happiness and ideal home conditions.
16
INTRODUCTION
Manufacture, Industry and Trade
For manufacturers, Rocky Mount offers many induce- ments, among which are the source and supply of labor. The abundance of female labor in the Rocky Mount district is an inducement to new industries. There is also adequate male labor, both white and colored. There are no labor troubles in Rocky Mount, and with the exception of the railroad strike in 1922, strikes have been practically un- known. The small percentage of foreign-born (less than 1%) insures English-speaking labor for all classes. It fol- lows that this labor is not contaminated by foreign elements that promote unrest, and that one language makes it possi- ble to forestall labor trouble. Loyalty is typical of this class of labor. -
Rocky Mount has one national bank and trust company, and one state bank and trust company, together with one in- dustrial bank, five building and loan associations and one fire insurance company.
Rocky Mount, according to the 1930 Census of Distribu- tion, has 511 retail stores, with annual sales amounting to $13,610,624.
Rocky Mount is the shopping center of a wide area, embracing a radius of 50 to 70 miles. In addition to the re- tail stores, there are numerous wholesale houses handling groceries, fruits and produce, hardware and notions. The city enjoys the reputation of being the jobbing center of a large territory. Situated in the hub of a fast-developing section, Rocky Mount has the natural advantages that at- tract people in all lines of business. It is truly the market- ing and shopping center of eastern North Carolina.
Newspapers
The city boasts of one of the best daily newspapers in the state, The Evening Telegram. This paper enjoys a large circulation and is a member of the Associated Press.
The city also has a good weekly paper with a large cir- culation, The Rocky Mount Herald.
Radio Station
Station WEED, in Rocky Mount, is the only broadcaster east of Raleigh in North Carolina. It is operated sixteen hours daily by a large staff, long experienced in radio broad- casting. It is splendidly equipped throughout and promises to become one of the South's outstanding stations.
THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
The membership of the Rocky Mount Chamber of Com- merce is made up of the business and professional men of Rocky Mount and the farmers and growers of this section, who are not only interested in the work, but enter actively into the problems and tasks confronting the Chamber. It is divided into departments, industrial, agricultural, educa- tional, civic, commercial and publicity, and all departments function and are headed by committees of able men.
The influence of this body has been largely responsible for the many developments of the city, and in every pro- gressive movement, the Chamber of Commerce uses its agencies for the best interests of the community.
The management of the Chamber is in the hands of a board of directors, who employ a full-time executive secre- tary and an assistant secretary, and maintain offices at 125 N. E. Main St.

The Sign over your door
tells the passer-by that you are there ready to serve him. But you also want to tell people, in all parts of the community. where you are and what you do.
The sign is only seen, however, by the small portion of the popu- lation who pass your way. Being fixed, it cannot reach out and tell somebody, a good prospect, on the other side of town about your business.
But Your Directory Advertising
It directs buyers from all parts of the community to your business and to any par- ticular service which they may require.
is before the entire community
The advertisers stand out as the leading and permanently pro-, gressive firms of the community.
You should make it easy for people to find you by putting in the directory such information as a buyer wants to know.

CITY DIRECTORY USES
1. SALES PROMOTION:
a. Sales Analysis ----
Comparing present amount of business obtained in a given area with possible maximum business in that area. The Householders' Directory shows the classes of business located on a street, in office buildings, in sections of the city, etc. In checking up salesmen's calls on business in an assigned territory the directory presents a picture of how many places have not been reported upon, and shows a ready list of prospects for your goods or service.
b. Leads-
Determining proper official to approach for sales interview. The alphabetical listing for each business and professional concern, shows the names of the owners, partners or officers.
c. Selected districts-
Determining parts of city best suited for increasing business. The Householders' Street Directory shows the exact type of business or residences along each street of the city-and shows if the occupant of the home is the owner.
d. Building mailing lists and direct mail campaigns-
1. List of local people (Neighborhood List) within a given radius of Business location. On a city map, draw a circle to include the ter- ritory you wish to cover in your neighborhood list. From the map you can obtain the name of each street with intersections in the circle you have drawn. In the Householders' Street Directory you will find the correct name of the occupant at each house, or building on these streets. This will give you a 100% list of the territory desired.
2. Lists of business houses and the professions-The business directory at the end of the book classifies every business and profession ac- cording to the nature of the business. Complete lists such as doc- tors, lawyers, printers, garages, auto dealers, furniture stores, con- tractors, etc., can be found in this classified directory section.
3. Vocational Lists-Such as clerks, stenographers, telephone oper- ators, carpenters, salesmanagers, purchasing agents, laborers, etc. The alphabetical directory shows the occupatior. of every individual in the city.
Run over the alphabetical pages-check marking the persons whose occupation is the one wanted for your list. This will give you a complete and accurate list for the entire city.
2. CREDIT:
a. Verifying customer's statements and information.
b. Information about customer.
Correct name, address, where employed and wife's name is given in the alphabetical directory for every individual. Whether he rents or owns home is usually shown in the Householders' Directory.
c. Determining character and stability of applicant for credit.
This directory gives his present occupation and residence. By referring to each yearly edition of the directory for the past few years, it is quickly determined whether the applicant holds the same job and residence, or flits from one job to another and one residence to another. After the new directory is delivered to you keep the old one on file. Never destroy it. You'll find old ones invaluable in checking your past records.
