Three modern hospitals are on the accredited list of the Ameri- can College of Surgeons and have on their staffs surgeons of wide reputation. Specialists for practically all diseases also make these hospitals their headquarters, and patients from a wide area come here for treatment.

Two of these hospitals have modern training schools for nurses, and their graduates are accepted by all practicing physicians and surgeons. The other hospital, the Division Hospital for the At- lantic Coast Line, employs only registered nurses.

To prospective homeseekers and individual citizens Rocky Mount offers every factor which makes for happiness and ideal home conditions.

MANUFACTURERS, INDUSTRY AND TRADE

For manufacturers, Rocky Mount offers many inducements, among which are the source and supply of labor. The surplus of female labor in the Rocky Mount district is an inducement to new industries. There is also a surplus of male labor, both white and colored. There are no labor troubles in Rocky Mount and, with the exception of the railroad strike in 1922, strikes are practically unknown. The small percentage of foreign-born (less than 1%) insures English-speaking labor for all classes. It follows that this labor is not contaminated by foreign elements that promote un-

rest, and that one language makes it possible to forestall labor trouble. Loyalty is typical of this class of labor.

The assessed valuation of all property, both real and personal, is around $22,000,000; the total bonded indebtedness around $1,750,000; and the net bonded indebtedness around $278,000.

The city government is on the council-manager plan, and the business of the city is handled in a most business-like manner.

There are three National banks in Rocky Mount and two State bank and trust companies, with total resources of over $12,000,000, together with two industrial banks, five building and loan asso- ciations and two fire insurance companies.

Rocky Mount has two hundred and nine (209) retail stores classified as follows: Art Goods and Novelties, Books, Bicycles, Meats, Cigars, Clothing, Candy, Flowers, Department, Drugs, General, Sporting Goods, Furniture, Groceries, Hardware, Five, Ten and Twenty-five Cent Stores, Jewelry, Shoes, Men's Furnish- ings, Ladies' Ready-to-Wear and Millinery.

The city boasts of one of the best daily newspapers in the State, The Evening Telegram. This paper enjoys a large cir- culation and is a member of the Associated Press.

Rocky Mount is a shopping center of a large area, embracing a radius of 50 to 75 miles. In addition to the retail stores, there are numerous wholesale houses, handling groceries, fruit and produce, hardware and notions. The city enjoys the reputation of being the jobbing center of a large territory. Situated as it is, in the hub of a fast developing section, Rocky Mount has the natural advantages that attract people in all lines of business. It is, truly, the marketing and shopping center of eastern North Carolina.

THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

The membership of the Chamber of Commerce is made up of the business and professional men of Rocky Mount and the farmers and growers of this section, who are not only interested in the work but enter actively into the problems and tasks con- fronting the association. It is divided into departments, in- dustrial, agricultural, educational, civic, commercial and pub- licity-all departments function and are headed by committees of able men.

The influence of this body has been largely responsible for the many developments of the city and, in every progressive move- ment, the Chamber of Commerce is found using its agencies to the help of the best interests of the community.

The management of the association is in the hands of a board of directors who employ an all-time executive secretary.

A Home Bank in ROCKY MOUNT Directed by Local Men

This unit of the North Carolina Bank and Trust Company is distinctly a local bank. The local directors are men who know the community and its people, who are well known by the people of the community, and who appreciate and understand the problems of local business men through years of local experience.

In addition, this unit has these important advantages:

(I) It has the powerful backing of the entire institution which has capital, surplus and undivided profits of $4,400,000.

(2) It has the guidance of the general board of directors and ex- ecutive staff composed of men of standing and reputation who have been prominent in the two Carolinas for years and whose direction is in accordance with the best business prin- ciples and the soundest banking practice.

As always, we welcome old friends and cordially invite new ones

City Directory Don'ts

DON'T put your Directory in an out-of-the-way place, but keep it where your customers can see and use it without stopping some one to find it.

DON'T think that a Directory is paying for it- self unless you use it, any more than an idle clerk can make you money.

DON'T look mad when a customer asks to look at your Directory.

DON'T look happy when a neighbor wants to borrow your Directory, for if you do, he will borrow it again, and if all were borrowers, when would the next Directory be published?

DON'T forget that an up-to-date city must have a Directory; and a merchant that has no Directory is what?

DON'T forget that a Directory borrower to-day will forget to return it to-morrow and you will call him what?

DON'T forget that the man who has a Di- rectory pays for it and the borrower gets for nothing what another man pays for. What do you call him?
