Community Attitude

Business and professional leaders and the people of Selma and Johnston County are vitally interested in indus- trial development toward the welfare of the area. Facing the importance of further industrialization, leading citizens of Selma and the area formed the Selma-Smithfield Indus- trial Development Corporation.

City, County and State governments have demonstrated a wholesome and cooperative attitude toward old and new industry and business organizations. New industries that have come to our town and area in the past few years have found splendid community attitude and able, industrious labor. The community has several desirable sites available for industry and will meet reasonable requirements to serve new industry and provide new floor space on a sound busi- ness basis.

Within a radius of 20 air miles there is a labor pool in excess of 3,600. Approximately 1,000 high school graduates enter this labor force annually. Selma is served by the At- lantic Coast Line Railroad and Southern Railway and by 6 Trucking Lines. Raleigh-Durham Airport, one of the South's leading, is only 40 miles away. Valuations and tax rates are reasonable and city utilities are available.

The Chamber of Commerce, with the cooperation of town government and civic clubs, has stated a concerted ef- fort to get downtown business organizations to improve their properties, both inside and out. The Branch Banking and Trust Company has taken the lead in this effort and has a large part of its complete modernization done. Also one of our smallest businesses is now undergoing modern- ization. This is, of course, a long range program; however, it is being met with enthusiasm.

The Selma-Smithfield Industrial Development Corp. and the Chamber of Commerce offer their services without obligation. All inquiries are handled in strict confidence. For further information please write the Selma Chamber of Commerce, Box 584, Selma, North Carolina, or telephone 965-3174
