With a state wide reputation as a center of religious activity, Ashe- boro has a proportionately large number of churches representing the

following denominations: Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, Catholic, Congregational Christian, Holiness, Friends, Episcopal, Evangelical and Reformed, Lutheran, Church of God and Wesleyan Methodist.
RECREATION AND SPORTS
Asheboro is an established center in the state and southeast for activities in several sports.
A public nine-hole golf course is popular among residents of Ashe- boro and the surrounding communities.
The Asheboro Country Club maintains a handsome clubhouse ad- jacent to a beautiful lake near US Highway No. 64 a few miles west of the city. The first nine holes of a projected 18 hole golf course have recently been completed.
Asheboro Memorial Swimming Pool
McCrary Athletic Field and Asheboro High School Athletic Field, two of the best lighted athletic fields in the state, are used for intensive baseball and football schedules. The city-sponsored softball league operates a summer schedule of night games under lights at both the Memorial Park and High School diamonds. Central High School also has a well lighted athletic field.
No finer building and facilities for industrial and community recre- ation can be found in the South than are afforded by the new building of the Acme-McCrary Employees Recreation Association. The splendid brick structure includes a huge gymnasium equipped to seat 1,000 spectators, a glass-enclosed swimming pool for year round use, bowling alleys, a cafeteria, a reading room, lounges, soda fountain, and other accommodations. The Mccrary Eagles baseball and basketball teams annually bring a representative schedule of college and semi-profes- sional teams to Asheboro during the summer and winter season.
A popular feature of Asheboro's recreation program is the $150,000 Asheboro Memorial Foundation, Inc. The first facility to be developed

PREFACE
on the Foundation's 12-acre tract in the city was a modern swimming pool, operated during the summer. A miniature 4 coach train operating on a quarter mile track has recently been installed. A large roller skat- ing rink is now under construction.
A Teen Age Club building constructed by the Kiwanis Club is widely used for meetings of young people and for dinner meetings of civic organizations. Both the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars have their own buildings which are used in connection with civic activities.
Asheboro's civic spirit is evident in its wide variety of clubs and fraternal organizations, all of which furnish opportunity for social and fraternal contacts which add to the joy of living in Asheboro,
HEALTH FACILITIES

trees in the heart of Asheboro, N. C., is Randolph Hospital, a 102-bed and 25 bassinet institution serving the more than 51,000 people of Ran- dolph County.
A unique feature of the hospital is a solarium of violet-ray glass on top of the building, indirectly lighted through glass brick panels and furnished in resort type furniture-the only hospital solarium of its type in North Carolina.
Randolph Hospital, Inc., is a community nonstock and nonprofit institution incorporated April 28, 1931 by a special act of the North Caro- lina General Assembly. Through donations of public spirited citizens of Randolph County, a substantial grant from the Duke Endowment and a bond issue by the city of Asheboro, sufficient funds were raised to

construct a 50 bed hospital and nurses home which was opened to the public July 9, 1932. In 1946 a wing was added to the hospital increasing the bed capacity. In May of 1951 the Mccrary Memorial Wing was for- mally opened to the public. This wing provided administrative office space, a lobby, several additional patient beds, and obstetrical delivery suite and newborn nursery giving the hospital its present bed capacity.
Adjacent to the hospital and constructed of the same cream brick and white limestone is a modern nurses' home.
Auxiliary services at Randolph Hospital include a crippled chil- dren's clinic, held one day each month and supervised by an ortho- pedic surgeon. This clinic is sponsored by the Asheboro Rotary Club and provides free services for crippled indigent children in the county. Hospital facilities are used in conducting twice monthly a cancer de- tection clinic sponsored by the Asheboro Kiwanis Club and North Car- olina Department of Public Health. The Hospital Blood Bank is supplied by the American Red Cross Blood program through the Red Cross Blood Center in Charlotte. A corps of 75 Red Cross Grey Ladies recruited from Asheboro and Randolph County, come to the hospital each afternoon and evening to receive visitors, distribute mail, care for flowers, and operate a bookmobile. The Hospital Medical Staff includes 25 doctors on the active staff, 6 doctors on the courtesy staff, and consultants from medical schools and adjacent cities who are recognized specialists in their field.
Additional health facilities include - The Griffin Clinic organized in 1938 with 31 beds and 12 bassinets and the recently constructed Ran- dolph County Health Center.
