PREFACE

View of Lake Lure and the Valley. The top of Chimney Rock is in the foreground

More than 70 artificial lakes, located in all parts of the "Land of the Sky," provide opportunities for boating, sailing and fishing. Through the mountains many hundreds of miles of trails are open to the hiker and horsemen. Streams of the region are well stocked in most cases with brook and rainbow trout, and the five game preserves in the west- ern North Carolina region provide good hunt- ing for deer in the surrounding terrain during the open hunting seasons. Bear, quail, rabbits and other small game are also plentiful in most of the mountain regions, and during the open season, nimrods from practically every state in the Union come to this section. During five seasons, deer hunts have been held in the Pisgah National Game Preserve.

Trout Fishing

Horseback-riding along the many enticing mountain trails is one of the favorite recrea- tions among visitors. Horse shows at Tryon, Blowing Rock, Hendersonville and Linville each year are events of great interest to follow- ers of equestrian activities.

In the mountain region near Asheville are located nearly 50 camps for boys and girls, which operate during the summer months and provide excellent summer recreational programs for thousands of boys and girls of school age.

In western North Carolina also are located the great religious assem- blies, sites for summer recreation and conferences for the members of a number of denominations. These include the Baptist assembly at Ridgecrest, the Presbyterian assembly at Montreat, the Y.M.C.A. assem- bly at Blue Ridge, the Methodist assembly at Lake Junaluska, the assem- bly of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church at Bon Clarken near Hendersonville, and the Episcopal assembly at Lake Kanuga.

CLIMATE AND HEALTH

An unsurpassed climate, which combines light, cool, exhilarating summers and mild winters, a large percentage of sunny days, mountain- protection from severe storms and a dry atmosphere, has long been a principal attraction of Asheville and the western portion of North Caro- lina. The health-giving qualities of this climate have been a factor in luring here many health-seekers in search of surcease from many dif- ferent afflictions. Many well-equipped sanatoria for the treatment of pulmonary and nervous afflictions are located in and near Asheville. Most notable among these sanatoria are the U. S. Veterans Hospital at Oteen, just east of the city limits, and the North Carolina State Tubercu- losis Hospital, near Black Mountain.

INDUSTRIES

In addition to the large volume of tourist trade, Asheville is a center for industries. Located near here are the great rayon plant of the American Enka Corp .; the huge pulp and paper plant of the Cham- pion Paper and Fibre Co., at Canton; the Sayles-Biltmore Bleacheries; the Beacon Mfg. Co., makers of blankets; the Han Rees Tannery; the National Casket Co .; and numerous other American Enka Plant plants manufacturing mica products, hosiery, dimension lumber, furni- ture, food products, barrel staves, rayon garments, and other articles.

Near Brevard is located the new cigarette paper mill of the Ecusta Paper Corp., where fine cigarette papers will be made from native flax.

The native industries which produce homespun woolens, rugs, na- tive pottery, native ironwork, and numerous other woven and manu- factured articles, are noted throughout the country.

Asheville is also a center for rapid growth in mining activities. Mica and feldspar mines near Spruce Pine, quartz mines, granite quarries,

vermiculite mines, mar- ble quarries, copper mines and many other diversified mineral de- velopments add to the importance of the mining industry here. Recent re- opening of old gold mines, for which this reg- ion was once famous, and discovery of new gold ore deposits, has focussed mining interest on this development in the last few years.

AGRICULTURE

Western North Carolina is noted for its production of apples, Tryon grapes, cattle and burley tobacco. Asheville is a marketing center for these products, the city having three sales warehouses for tobacco and an auction center for cattle and other farm ani- mals. The region is a gen- eral farming area also, and many crops are pro- duced. Timber is also a noted crop in the high- lands.

TRADE AND COMMERCE

As the principal com- mercial center for 18 counties, Asheville is one of the most impor- tant trade centers of North Carolina, the city having rated second in retail trade in the state in re- cent compilations.

Due to its large trade area and the many hun- dreds of thousands of vis- itors touring western North Carolina at all sea- sons of the year, the city has become one of the finest high-class shop- ping centers in the South.

Large stands of virgin timber are found throughout Western North Carolina

SPECIAL EVENTS

Asheville's tourist season, which extends throughout the year and reaches high peaks in the spring, summer and autumn, has inspired many events of unusual nature.

Rhododendron Blossoms in the "Land of the Sky"

The Rhododendron Festival, held each year at the high point of the flowering season for the mountain rhododendron, is one of the most spectacular civic celebrations of the country. Presenting five colorful parades, a series of brilliant balls, spectacles and social affairs, the Festival has earned international fame.

Each August the mountain folk of the highlands gather at Asheville to present their annual Mountain Folk Festival, an event which is almost unique in its presentation of folk music and folk dances. The annual Mozart Festival in late August, and the Southern Appalachian Bridge Tournament, early in August, are important features of the summer calendar.

Horse shows held in Tryon, Linville, Hendersonville and Blowing Rock, and the Asheville Dog Show are events of major importance. Golf tournaments, including the $5,000 "Land of the Sky Open" in March, and the Biltmore Forest Country Club, Asheville Country Club, and Beaver Lake Golf Club Invitation Tournaments in July and August, are featured sports events of the year.

WATER SUPPLY

Asheville's water supply is the purest to be found. The water, coming from the summits of the high peaks, is noted for its soft quality and its lack of impurities. The city water system is one of the few gravity systems in existence, and Buncombe County is one of the few counties in the U. S. providing water by means of mains along most highways in the county.

DIRECTORY

BLISHERS

-thus assuring you the ultimate service that skill and care can produce in the way of City Directories or other reference media, and providing protection against fraudulent advertising schemes which operate under the name of Directories.

The following "Standards of Practice" adopted at the inception of the Association of North American Directory Publishers in 1898, and strictly adhered to over the years, is your guarantee of satisfactory Directory Service:

The publisher of a Directory should dedicate his best efforts to the cause of business uplift and social service, and to this end pledges himself:

1. To consider, first, the interest of the user of this book.

2. To subscribe to and work for truth, honesty and accuracy in all de- partments.

3. To avoid confusing duplication of listings, endeavoring to classify every concern under the one heading that best describes it, and to treat additional listings as advertising, to be charged for at regular rates.

4. To increase public knowledge of what Directories contain; to study pub- lic needs and make Directories to sup- ply them; to revise and standardize methods and classifications, so that what is wanted may be most easily found, and the Directory be made to serve its fullest use as a business and social

reference book and director of buyer and seller.

5. To decline any advertisement which has a tendency to mislead or which does not conform to business in- tegrity.

6. To solicit subscriptions and ad- vertising solely upon the merits of the publications.

7. To avoid misrepresentations by statement or inference regarding circu- lation, placing the test of reference pub- licity upon its accessibility to seekers, rather than on the number of copies sold.

8. To co-operate with approved or- ganizations and individuals engaged in creative advertising work.

9. To avoid unfair competition.

10. To determine what is the high- est and largest function of Directories in public service, and then to strive in every legitimate way to promote that function.

$100 Reward will be paid by the Association of North American Directory Publishers for the arrest and conviction of any person or persons engaged in the publishing, collecting or canvassing for any fraudulent or fake directories.
