Lenoir Rhyne College


GENERAL INFORMATION


Lenoir Rhyne College was formally opened September 1, 1891. The beautiful and extensive campus was the gift of Capt. Walter Lenoir, in whose honor the College was named.


The following presidents have served the College: Dr. R. A. Yoder, 1891-1901; Dr. R. L. Fritz, 1901-1920; Dr. J. C. Peery, 1920-1925; P. E. Monroe, 1925-1926; Dr. H. B. Schaeffer, 1926-1934; P. E. Monroe, D. D., 1934


Under the administration of President Schaeffer, the College was ad- mitted to membership in the Southern Association of Colleges and Sec- ondary Schools.


The more recent building program includes the erection of the Daniel Efird Rhyne Administration Building; Mauney Hall, dormitory for girls; the College Dining Hall, in 1928. The Russell Home with two acres of ground was acquired in 1941. Mauney Hall Annex was erected in 1941. The Carl A. Rudisill Library, gift of Mr. C. A. Rudisill and family, Cherry- ville, was erected in 1942. In 1941 the Semi-Centennial effort amounted to around $200,000. The largest single unit was raised by the Hickory Chamber of Commerce-$100,000 for an auditorium which will be erected as soon as war conditions permit.


In 1923 the name of the college was changed to Lenoir Rhyne College in honor of Mr. Daniel Efird Rhyne who has been the chief benefactor toward the advancement of the college.


CAMPUS AND BUILDINGS


The campus consists of 40 acres in the City of Hickory. There are ten buildings on the campus.


LIBRARY


The college library of 20,000 volumes provides adequate facilities for the student in reading, studying, and research. The books are classified and catalogued according to the Dewey Decimal System.


COLLEGE ACTIVITIES


Lenoir Rhyne College has a Literary Society, National Honorary Jour- nalistic and Dramatic Fraternities, A Cappella Choir, Debating Teams, Playmakers, etc.


The students publish an annual, The Hacawa, and a weekly newspaper, The Lenoir Rhynean.


RELIGIOUS ACTIVITIES


Lenoir Rhyne affords opportunity for participation in various religious activities. Chapel services are conducted daily; Church and Sunday School services are held every Sunday on the campus; The Luther League, The Lutheran Student Association, Diakonian Club, Young Women's Missionary Society, and Y. W. C. A. are active.


PHYSICAL EDUCATION


Lenoir Rhyne College has an excellent Department of Physical Educa- tion for both men and women. Mr. Shore Neal, Physical Education Director for Men, has a Master's degree in Physical Education from the University of North Carolina, as has also Miss Nell Stallings, Director of Physical Education for Women. Special attention is given to intra-mural games-Basketball, Volley Ball, Soft Ball, Baseball, Football, etc.
