The First American Gold Rush took place at Gald Hill, located 17 miles SE af Salisbury an Highway 52. Gold was first knawn to exist in Rawan as early as 1799, but the first veins were not discavered until 1B42, when the Gald Hill Campany was activated. Shafts sunk 800 feet inta the ground still exist.

Educational Future Brighter

The educational future af the yauth af Salisbury and Rowan Caunty has never been brighter.

The Salisbury schaal system includes six elemen- tary schoals, twa high schaals and ane brand new juniar high schaal. While facilities are excellent, they alsa exemplify quality education at its best. This entire system is accrediated by the Southern Assacia- tian af Secandary Schaals and Calleges, and at pres- ent is the anly camplete system in Narth Caralina ta meet these standards.

In the Rowan County school system there are five new consalidated high schoals, twa junior high schoals and 19 elementary schaals. Three of the high schaals are already accredited by the Sauthern Associatian and the ather two are working tawards this accreditotion.

Altogether, these twa systems enralled 1B,242 students in 1962. While the drop-out prablem can- not be minimized, the recard here is well abave aver- age, as 86% af the students campleting the eighth grade alsa camplete high school and 45% of the high schaal graduotes also enter college.

Of majar impartance is the Rawan Industrial Edu- catian Center which will be camplete and in aper- ation by late 1962. This regional schoal, part af the North Caralina system, will provide sub-callege tech- nological educatian ond training in industrial trades and skills far the citizens af Rawan and several adjacent caunties.

Salisbury is also the home af two fine faur-year liberal arts caeducatianal calleges, bath fully accred- ited by the Sauthern Assaciatian of Secandary Schaols and Calleges.

Catawba Callege, faunded in 1851 by the Eve gelicol and Reformed Church, has a campus af 19 ocres and 22 buildings, a staff af aver 100 and en- rallment of about 900 including same 400 lacal day students. It grants a B. A. degree in 25 majar fields af study, and its Science, Pre-Med and Business Ad- ministration Deportments are especially highly re- garded. A number af night classes are affered ta lacal residents.

Livingstane College is ane af the finest Negra colleges in the country. Spansared by the A. M. E. Zian Church, it has a lavely 315 acre campus and a student bady numbering abaut 800. The spirit pre- vailing between Livingstane and the cammunity is a majar factor in the unusually goad race relatians pre- valent in Salisbury. Bath Livingstane and Catawba are currently in the midst af extensive building pra- grams.

The final link in Salisbury's complete educational picture is Solisbury Business Callege. Having just maved inta new quarters, it has a capacity af abaut 100 students and affers a full range af business caurses.

Recreation Is Booming Business

Recreation, bath arganized and independent, is a baaming business in Salisbury and Rowan Caunty.

In the last few years Salisbury has expanded its arganized recreatian pragram through the building af twa city recreation centers around which year-'raund programs revalve. In addition the citizens of Salis- bury and Rawan Caunty have built a half-million dallar YMCA and implemented it with a full staff and well-rounded extensive program.

The Salisbury recreatian pragram provides a va- riety af activities for all age graups, from the an- nual Saap Box Derby ta adult classes in ballroom dancing, art, ceramics and interior decorating.

The City Park Recreation Center is the meeting place of the Retired Citizens Club. The largest and most active such club in North Caralina, about 140 af its 350 members meet here every Tuesday far a morning af fun and fellowship

Sparts events af the lacal calleges and high schaols affer a full schedule of spectatar entertain- ment. The Salisbury Braves, in the Western Caro- lina League, Class D won their pennant in 1962 and pravide exciting prafesional baseball. Woodleaf Lanes, a new addition, offers the best in facilities for bath league and apen bawling. There are twa theatres in downtown Salisbury and three drive-in theatres just outside the city.

In addition to the Salisbury Country Club and its 18 hale Donald Rass championship course, there are two 18 hale golf courses in Rowan County. The best mountain caurses are less than 90 miles away and Pinehurst, Caralina's golf capital is abaut 65 miles fram Salisbury.

Prabably the fastest growing spart in the area is baating, enjayed mastly on 15,000 acre High Rock Lake with many miles of beautiful shoreline. Public access areas are provided, and many Rawan residents maintain lake front cottages-useful in our climate for mast of the year.

High Rack Lake is popular alsa far water skiing, fishing and swimming, and now anather most at- tractive man-made lake, Tuckertown, is filling in a wilderness area just east af High Rack.

Salisbury is lacated just west of the center of North Caralina. As a result the Blue Ridge Moun- tains are less than a twa haur drive away, while in the oposite direction the lovely Caralina beaches are anly a faur or five haur drive.

Fine Year-Around Climate

Rawan County enjoys a nearly ideal "happy medium" in respect ta climate. The temperature in the winter is maderate, nat only because af its sauth- erly latitude, but alsa because the high mountains of Western North Carolina form a massive barrier against the bitter cald waves maving west to east. Thaugh definitely Southern in climate, Salisbury is still far enaugh north, and has sufficient altitude (764 feet abave sea level), ta escape the humid op- pressive summers of many regians af the South. Early morning temperatures average belaw 68° even at the hattest time af the year.

Thus extremes in climate are very rare and shart- lived and the usual winter days are pleasant. The total snawfall in a year averages araund 6 inches and each is generally welcame because af its beauty and ephemeral quolity. In the winter days af Jan- uary and February, the high temperature averages around 50° and the law oraund 32º. The average July and August day has a high af araund 87º and a law of 66° with a usually camfartable range af humidity. And Spring? It is the Spring af the poets beautiful, refreshing, flawering, and unfar- gettable. Then after the pleasant and fun-filled Sum- mer . . . Autumn is dry, crisp, exceptianal with a vivid radiance that lingers well inta Navember.

All in all, the climate af Salisbury and Rowan County affard smany pleasant days far enjayable living.

HOMES

Salisbury's residential areas are amang the mast pleosant ta be faund anywhere in the country. From the charming alder hames clase ta the dawntawn area, the lavely hames in the Country Club sectian or the newer outlying develapments a hame can be found to meet almost any taste and purse.

Most streets in bath old and new sections are lined with beautiful shade trees, adding much to the friendly, relaxed atmasphere. Municipol facili- ties ore well maintained ond steadily being impraved. The majority of aur homes are awner-accupied and show the gaad effects af pride in hame ownership.

While Solisbury's transient papulatian is small, there ore always same hames and apartments far rent and af caurse hames for sale. In addition there are many attractive lots available and there is gaod healthy campetitian amang a number of gaad lacal home builders. Consequently a lavely hame can be built here far os little as $10 per square faot, and lots are equally reasonable.

Far the individual wha prefers cauntry living, Rowan Caunty affers many, many acres of ralling farm land and woaded areas. And all af the com- munities in the caunty are equally pleasant places in which ta live.

CHURCHES

Salisbury and Rawan County are in the "Bible Belt" and, especially cansidering present-day candi- tions, are praud af that distinction. Of a caunty papulatian af 82,817, abaut 44,000 are members af aur 135 churches, well abave the national average. Mast af these members are active and gaad sup- porters af their churches, and all churches maintain vigaraus yauth pragrams.

The majarity of Salisbury and Rawan Caunty resi- dents are Pratestant, with Lutherons, Presbyterians, Methadists and Baptists predaminating. Virtually all other denaminatians are represented by ane ar mare churches, including the Cathalic and Jewish segments af the papulatian.

Each year sees mare new churches established and existing anes impraved and expanded. But alang with these new churches Rawan Caunty cantains same af the aldest hauses af warship in the country.

Every visitar and newcamer is sure ta find a warm and friendly welcame awaiting him at the church of his chaice.

CITY LAKE AND PARK Gracious living at its best.

INDUSTRY

As the above schematic map shows, Salisbury- Rowan comprises the heart of the dynamic Piedmont Crescent and the Piedmont Industrial Triangle. In this Triangle, an area bounded by Interstate Highways 1-85, 1-77 and 1-40, industrial plants produce a great variety of goods whose value added by manufac- ture is greater than that of any equal area any- where in the South.

For many years industrial employment in Salis- bury and Rowan County was concentroted in just two industries-the Southern Railway Shops and tex- tiles.

Soon after World War II, however, Southern Rail- way began to retire its steam locomotives in favor of diesels with a consequent drastic reduction in workforce. The textile mills turned to modern mo- chinery and outomation requiring fewer but more highly trained employees. Our farms became more and more mechonized, releasing many more people to swell the rolls of those seeking industrial employ- ment.

A 900-employee Veterons Administration Hospitol was located in Salisbury, a few new plants were brought in ond some healthy home-grown industries started, but not nearly enough to close the employ- ment gap.

Early in 1959 the Salisbury-Rowon Chamber of Commerce took bold steps to meet this chollenge. In less than two years it hos unified Rowan County as never before and doubled its membership and bud- get, thus providing the money and manpower for an intensive new industry drive and action to im- prove the business and industrial climate.

Despite o serious setback in October, 1960, when Southern Railwoy, completely closed the mechanical shops in Spencer, the results have been little short of fantastic. In approximately a two year period from early 1960 to early 1962 the scoreboard shows twelve new plants added, over twenty industrial expansions, hundreds of new jobs. And by the end of 1962 a new $500,000 Industrial Educotion Center will be in op- eration.

While 56% of Salisbury-Rowan's 10,000-plus in- dustrial jobs are still in textiles or garments, the bal- ance are broadly diversified. Some of these ore: structural steel, brick, several types of furniture, high purity aluminum foil, industrial wire cloth, mobile homes, humidifying equipment, industrial rubber rolls and rubber hose, printing and publishing, building and monumental granites, automatic curb-loying mo- chinery, flour and feeds, commercial refrigerotion equipment, proprietary medicines, beverage syrups, textile chemicals, lumber and millwork, florists sup- plies, packing plant products, headache remedies, Balfour Pink Granite, the hardest granite in the world . a totol of 121 manufacturing and service in- dustries.

Solisbury-Rowan still has, however, a lorge pool of excellent recruitoble labor and an abundance of fine industriol plant sites. With its many other od- vantages it is destined for considerable industriol growth in the immediate future.
