In 1973, a fellowship hall with Sunday School facilities, kitchen, and space for social activities was added to the church.
In 1976, new lighting fixtures and heating and air conditioning were installed in the sanctuary, donated by Mrs. Nancy Beaty. Also, the parking lot and drive were paved, new shrubs were set out, these contributed by Mr. and Mrs. Hayden Vanderburg.
In 1977, the pews in the sanctuary were padded and preparations were made by the Brotherhood, W. M.U. and the B. Y. W. for a playground area.
In summary of the history of a Grand Old Church, Howell's Baptist, the words of Miss Letha Snyder: "It is true that as in all organizations, there have been through the years, periods of discouragement and differences, but the faith and courage found in the first group of Missionary Baptist (at Howell's Baptist Church), has continued to live in the descendents of these sainted people."

FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH, MIDLAND, NORTH CAROLINA
THIRD OLDEST - 1881
First Baptist Church of Midland was organized in 1881 by request of Elder R. H. James with 19 charter members. The church was named "Chaney's Grove Stand". Reverend James serve as the first pastor. Of the thirty-seven pastors and interim pastors from 1881 to 1979, Reverend James served on three different occasions as did Reverend A. C. Davis. Reverend J. S. Harris served on two different occasions.
Value of the church property in 1918 was $1500. Final payment on the communion set was made in March, 1923. It is believed the church bell was purchased as early as 1922. It was moved from the front of the church to the back at an unknown date and in 1979 the bell was again moved to the front of the church.
On the first Sunday in October, 1922, the name of
Chaney Hill Baptist Church was changed to First
Baptist Church of Midland.
The church was bricked in 1942. The parsonage was built in 1957 at an
approximate cost
of
$14,000.
An
organ fund was
started in November, 1958.
The Educational Building was built in 1 "1 at a cost of $8,000. The new front was built to + murch at a cost of $8,000 in 1960. the new cemetery, An activity s was bought in September of 1964 at a cost of $500. The Fellowship Hall next door to the church was purchased in 1965 for $10, 825. The price included seven acres of land. In July 1972, air conditioning was installed in the parsonage and in August 1972, a water filter was installed at the church. November 1972, walk-ways for the new cemetery were poured. In March 1973, a new activity bus was purchased for $1300.
The remodeling of the church in 1974
was completed at a cost of $39,669.50 and the value of the church property for 1975, including the pastor's home, was $125,000.
Reverend Davis became interim pastor in 1976. Reverend Ronald Helms accepted a call to the church in September 1977. A new parsonage was built next door to the fellowship hall in 1978 at a cost of $46,000. A new van was bought for church activities in 1978 at a cost of $6200. Estimated value of church property and church parsonage for 1979 was $200,000.
A new Fellowship Building was built in 1982 at a cost of approximately $40 to $50,000.

FOURTH OLDEST - 1886
First Baptist Church, Concord, North Carolina, was organized October 26, 1886 ( some say October 29, 1886). Reverend W. R. Gwaltney, DD served as Moderator and Reverend A. G. McManaway preached the sermon.
The congregation used the Courthouse to meet in for awhile. Reverend George P. Bostic was the first pastor.
A Sunday School was organized in the home of Major A. J. Dodamead on the corner of what is now Cabarrus Avenue, West and Spring Street, N. W.
The next pastor was Reverend J. D. Newton who resigned to become a Foreign Missionary to China. During Mr. Newton's tenure a building seating 250 people was erected on the corner of Grove Street and Spring Street. In January 1889, the first worship service was held in the new building with fifty-five members of "Concord Baptist Church" in attendance.
J. O. Alderman was called as pastor in 1892 and for the next three years the church membership doubled.
In 1898 the Concord Baptist Church became "The First Baptist Church."
Reverend Lacy B. Hoge became pastor in 1898 and under his leadership a neighboring band of Baptists were organized as the "Second Baptist Church," now known as the McGill Avenue Baptist Church.
During World War I (1914-1918) Reverend George V. Tilley served as pastor.

In 1924 a new Sanctuary was built on the same location during the pastorate of Reverend Graham A. Martin, DD.
The church did not prosper during the depression years, but from 1930-1952, during the pastorate of Reverend E. S. Summers, it did. During this time the church was instrumental in the organization of Young Street (1930), Pitts (1943) and Immanuel (1951).
From 1953-1960 Reverend Thurman B. Stone was the pastor and the Church built a new Educational Plant and acquired a new parsonage on South Union Street.
Reverend Howard G. Dawkins filled the pastorate from 1961-1967. It was during this time a new parsonage on Claymont Street was
constructed. The Church organized the Providence Baptist Mission, Harrisburg.
From 1968-1974 Reverend Jack Hill served as pastor. It was during this time that an eighteen acre site was purchased on what is now Branchview Drive, S.E.
Dr. Robert W. Bailey served as pastor from 1975-1980. Dr. E. Eugene Hunsinger, the present pastor, came to First Baptist Church in 1981.
In July 1985, the Church moved from the corner of Grove Avenue and Spring Street to 200 Branchview Drive, S.E. in a beautiful educational plant with a temporary Sanctuary .

PHANIELS BAPTIST CHURCH, ROCKWELL, NORTH CAROLINA FIFTH OLDEST - 1896
It all began on the first of September, 1896, when Reverend J. J. Payseur, J. C. Denny, and Henry Helms, organized Phaniels Baptist Church, Rockwell, North Carolina, in the Phaniels community, with twenty-two charter members. They elected the following officers: J. M. Funderburk - Clerk
John L. Yost - Treasurer
Z. W. Roseman, John Yost, and James Yost - Deacons September 17, 1897, land was purchased containing Phaniels Lutheran Church building from Jacob A.

Smith and Jacob P. Goodman . On the same day the church joined the Mecklenburg-Cabarrus Missionary Baptist Association. Services were held twice a month.
In 1903, Phaniels joined the South Yadkin Baptist Association. The Baptist Young People Union was started in 1923.
When in 1927 the Rowan Baptist Association was

organized, the church joined that Association and remained in it until 1961, when the Church joined the Cabarrus Baptist Association.
It was during the pastorate of Reverend J. W. Buckner on May 7, 1939, that the Church voted to build a new Sanctuary. Reverend Buckner donated the first $5.00.
Construction began in 1941. The first service was held in the new building in June 1942. Reverend H. T. Davis was pastor. The Church indebtedness was paid off and a Dedication Service was held in November, 1944. The first full time pastor was Reverend J. C. Hill.
The first Vacation Bible School was held in 1947, and in 1948 a Woman's Missionary Union was formed, in 1949 a Brotherhood was started under the leadership of Reverend F. P. Blankenship.
Additional property was acquired in 1953.
The present building was remodeled and an educational building built in 1963-1964 during the tenure of Reverend H. G. Barnes. -- Information taken from "Pictorial Directory 1975."
From 1972-1985 under the leadership of Reverend James Allen, a Fellowship Hall was built, the parking lot paved, and the Auditorium was remodeled.
During the history of Phaniels Baptist Church seventeen preachers have come out of our church.

DIRECTOR OF MISSIONS
CABARRUS BAPTIST ASSOCIATION
FIRST 1953-1960
Reverend R. T. Greene began his work with the Association on May 1, 1953. He resigned in 1960 to become the Secretary of the Relief and Annuity work with the North Carolina Baptist State Convention in Raleigh.
At the close of the Executive Committee Meeting in June 1960, Reverend Henry Register, Moderator, presented the R. T. Greene's a gift from the Executive Committee and spoke briefly of his outstanding work since being with the Cabarrus Baptist Association.
SECOND 1960-1962
In a called meeting of the Cabarrus Baptist Association, June 20, 1960, Reverend A. T. Greene, Jr. was called to be our Associational Missionary. He accepted stating he would be on the field by August 1, 1960.
On October 29, 1962, he resigned to accept the work Director of Direct Missions for the South Carolina Baptist State Convention. His resignation to become effective as of December 30, 1962.
The Executive Committee on November 19, 1962 voted to give a gift to Reverend and Mrs. Greene as a going away gift of appreciation.
THIRD 1963-1965
A call to become our third Associational Missionary, was extended to Reverend E. C. Watson, at a Special Called session of the Cabarrus Baptist Association, meeting with First Baptist Church, Concord on January 4, 1963. Mr. Watson accepted the call promising to be on the field sometime around the first or middle of March, 1963.
Mr. Watson resigned, according to the minutes of the Executive Committee meeting with Wil-Mar Park Church, September 27, 1965, with his
resignation becoming effectivve October 10, 1965, (One record says October 15, 1965) to be associated with the Home Mission Board in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Executive Committee gave the Watson's as a going away gift of appreciation, a dryer.

FOURTH 1966-1972
The Moderator called a Special Session of the Cabarrus Baptist Association for December 27, 1965, and presented Reverend Thurman W. Allred a call to become our Director of Missions.
He accepted the invitation and promised to be on the field by February 1, 1966.
During the Annual Meeting, October 23, 1972, Mr.
Allred tendered his resignation to become £ a

Section of the
Church Administration Department of the £ Baptist
Sunday School Board, Southern Baptist Convention,
with offices in Nashville, Tennessee. His resignation to become effective December 31, 1972.
The 1972 Annual was dedicated to Reverend and Mrs. Thurman W. Allred.
A reception was held for Reverend and Mrs. Allred by the Cabarrus Baptist Association on December 10, 1972, at Kerr Street Baptist Church. The churches contributed a love gift to the Allreds in the sum of $595.31.
FIFTH 1974-1979
On March 14, 1974, the Moderator called the Association for a Special meeting to recommend Reverend George E. Shore to become Director of Missions.
Mr. Shore accepted the call and came May 1, 1974. On May 19, 1974, a reception for the Shore family was held at the Associational parsonage.
At the Executive Board meeting with Franklin Heights Baptist Church, November 20, 1978, Mr. Shore tendered his resignation effective January 31, 1979. He had accepted a new Baptist State Convention position working with the Associational Directors over the State.
A farewell to the Shores was said during a fellowship hour given the Shores on Sunday, January 28, 1979.
SIXTH 1979-
Dr. Russell L. Willis was recommended as our new Director of Missions in the Executive Board meeting at Parkwood Baptist Church, June 18, 1979.
Dr. Willis accepted the call saying he would be

on the field by August 1, 1979. A reception was given for Dr. and Mrs. Russell L. Willis and son, Byron, on August 19, 1979, welcoming them to the Cabarrus Baptist Association. Reverend Gary Byrd, a member £
Committee, introduced Dr. Willis
of the Missions Session on October 30, 1979.
