A COPY OF INSCRIPTIONS ON THE GRAVESTONES IN THE

OLD CEMETERY, OR PINE RIDGE CEMETERY,

SO CALLED, IN HANCOCK, NEW HAMPSHIRE.

This publication is issued with the view of preserving in a con- venient and permanent form of print, a copy of the inscriptions on the gravestones in the Old Cemetery. In many instances these records can be found in no other place, and as time goes on even these will be obliterated, and all record of the last resting places of the former generations of the inhabitants of our town be lost. It is but fitting that we honor their memory by preserving these records in a durable form to hand down to future generations. The most that we can do for them now is to see to it that their graves are not forgotten.

There are many mounds in the cemetery (some with rough stones at the head and feet) indicating graves that must ever remain unmarked and unknown.

The inscriptions have been copied as nearly as possible exactly as found upon the stones, including the spelling, capitalization, punctu- ation and the use of the old fashioned s(f) on some of the older stones. The variations of spelling the same name even in the same family have been observed.

Although not strictly in accordance with the vote of the town we have recorded a few unmarked graves by request with the expectation that stones will be erected to correspond, and properly marked in the. near future. Many of these unmarked graves may have stones erected to mark them as time goes on and many more burials will likely be made there in the old cemetery, but all record of these must neces- sarily be omitted from this work.

The idea of copying these inscriptions was undoubtedly suggested from a similar work published recently by the town of Peterborough, and the subject was first brought up at a meeting of Hancock Histori- cal Society by the late Mr. Orland Eaton. As a result the following resolution was passed at the annual town meeting of March 1909.

Resolved, That the town through its cemetery committee or otherwise, take action to try to persuade the relatives of those whose gravestones are broken, in the old cemetery here, to replace them, and solicit funds towards the expense of procuring printed copies of all inscriptions in this cemetery at an early date in the future.

Orland Eaton was selected to carry out the foregoing resolution.

r

Before the annual town meeting of March 1910, Mr. Eaton, the instigator and prime mover in this enterprise, was taken from us, but the following vote of the town shows how his interest in the work con- tinued through life:

Voted, To accept the legacy of One Hundred Dollars bequeathed to the town by the late Orland Eaton according to the terms stated in the codocil of his will (to be used toward the expense of printing the inscriptions on the gravestones in the old cemetery, provided this work is completed within two years from the date of his decease. )

As a result of the vote of the annual meeting of 1909 seventy dollars had been contributed for the work, and the success of the enterprise was assured at the annual town meeting of 1910 by the passage of the following motion :

Voted, That a survey and plan of the old cemetery be prepared, that a copy of the inscriptions on all the gravestones be made and printed for permanent preservation under the direction of a committee of three, to be appointed by the selectmen, and that the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars be raised and appropriated for the purpose to be used in connection with any donations or contributions made for this object.

Under the above motion, Andrew B. Stone, Edgar L. Ware and Wilfred M. Davis were appointed a committee to carry the foregoing resolutions into effect, the result of their efforts being the publication of this book of inscriptions.

EXPLANATION OF PLAN.

This plan of the old cemetery has been prepared to aid in the location of grave stones. On account of being next to the highway it was thought best to use the row of iron pins on the north side of the cemetery to measure from in the location of graves. At the points indicated by letters of the alphabet on the plan, are set eighty-four iron pins, forty-two on each side, firmly secured in the foundation stones of the wall which surrounds the cemetery. On the ends of these iron pins letters are cut as shown in the plan. In some portions of the yard the graves are placed very irregularly and in order to establish some plan for the location of these graves, imaginary lines were run north and south as indicated on plan, wherever an unobstructed space through the gravestones could be found, and measurements from the north iron pins southerly to the front of each gravestone were made, and from this imaginary line east to the face of the gravestone.

Under this arrangement will be found a letter and figure at the left of each of the following printed record of inscriptions to indicate its location; for instance, A 57 indicates that the grave is south fifty- seven feet from the north iron pin marked A, on an imaginary line to the south iron pin with a similar letter.

The figure at the right of the record of inscription indicates that it is that number of feet east from this imaginary line to the face of the gravestone.

On account of using more iron pins at each end of these imaginary lines than there are letters in the alphabet, this second alphabet is indicated thus 1A, 1B, &c., both at the right of the records of inscrip- tions and upon the iron pins and continues through the alphabet the second time as far as the letter P.
