EXPLANATION OF THE GENEALOGIES
T HESE GENEALOGIES (1749-1963) are based on Town and Church records supplemented by material from newspaper reports, records of deeds, census records, Aldrich's "Walpole As It Was and As It Is", histories of adjacent towns, and gravestones. We believe we have copied data from every legible gravestone in the town. We have had additional data fur- nished by families in response to a direct mailing to all residents and notices in the newspaper requesting genealogical information.
Unfortunately, there are bound to be errors. Early writings are not always clearly legible. Frequently they do not agree. Distinguishing be- tween Jr and Sr, changing of given names or use of nicknames, the erratic spelling in the early days, and translation of given and surnames from a foreign language into English present the problems with which all gene- alogists are acquainted. Add to this the probability of error in transcrib- ing and copying this massive amount of material, upward of 30,000 names, and error is bound to result. We trust the benefit most readers will derive will far outweigh the annoyance of the few who find mistakes.
These genealogies begin with the establishment of the family in Wal- pole and continue until the family has discontinued its connection with the town. The name of the founder is in capitals, followed by his place and date of birth and death, names of his parents, place and date of mar- riage, name of wife with her data in the same order, occupation of the founder, political office, place of family residence and last, in brackets, page references to Volume I (an index). In the case that any of this in- formation is not known, the order is maintained, simply omitting that item. In a few cases the father of the family did not, himself, come to Walpole, but he is included because that has seemed the simplest way to show the family as a unit in Walpole.
Couples whose only record was the birth of an unnamed child have been omitted, as well as couples who obviously came to Walpole from elsewhere, only to be married.
One line of descent has been followed at a time. The first digit of the number indicates the number of the generation from the founder; the second digit the number of the child of that father. Hence, 11 is the first born child of the founder; 12 indicates the second born, etc. If he had more than nine children the 10th child becomes 19+ 1, the eleventh 19 + 2, etc. If the order in which the children were born is unknown, all children in that immediate family are designated 1-, thereby showing
viii
only the generation. Occasionally children born before the father came to Walpole never came to Walpole and had no connection with the town, yet they are known to exist. In such case the first child appearing in this genealogy may be, for example, 13 or 17.
Following this system the second generation is designated with the digit 2. A grandchild of the founder is 21 or 22. A great-grandchild is 31 or 32.
We have endeavored to use only original data wherever available. For example, it might have been easier for the reader had we calculated the birthdate when all we have is a gravestone giving date of death and age (79/3/10). Yet we have felt that providing the original data gives some indication of the source and reliability of the information.
Occasionally the reader will be perplexed in sorting out the children from successive wives or husbands. Where we are not certain, we try to leave the data, as found, to help those who may have, from other sources, more information to guide them.
In any event we trust that we, having combed the records of the Town, will have provided the historian and the genealogist a source which may save him time. It will save our worn and crumbling records from much handling.
