DIRECTORY INTRODUCTION
In April 1958, William G. Saltonstall, Principal of the Academy, mailed an Alumni Census Questionnaire to more than 12,000 men who had pre- viously attended Exeter. The primary purpose of this questionnaire was to assemble data on community and vocational activities of Exeter men. The summary of this information was presented in THE PRINCIPAL'S REPORT TO THE TRUSTEES in November, 1958. This report was printed separately and circulated to all Exeter alumni, parents, and friends in January, 1959.
The secondary purpose of the Alumni Census Questionnaire was the ultimate preparation of the Twelfth Edition of the Alumni Directory. Be- tween April, 1958 and April, 1959, more than 8,000 questionnaires had been returned from Exeter men in all parts of the world.
A Directory of Exeter alumni was first published more than 125 years ago. These early Directories were considerably more than mere address lists. College degrees, occupational data, and residence were listed for almost every man. A study of these early publications, of which a few remain in print, reveals many interesting aspects of the character of the Academy in the early years of the school.
The very complete and comprehensive Fourth Edition published in 1903 under the supervision of Professor James A. Tufts, '74, is still a very useful document to which reference is often made. It was the practice in early Directories to group alumni by the year in which they entered the Academy. The specific listing of classes by the year of graduation does not begin in any Academy records until 1855. The Fourth Edition was prepared from hand- written records apparently made by the Principal at the time students entered Exeter. These valuable documents are still available at the Academy and are preserved in fireproof storage.
The current edition follows the format of the Eleventh Edition published in 1954 in that it provides as much occupational data as is available. Individ- ual alumni were asked to identify their own occupational code. An explana- tion of these codes will be found in the section entitled Occupational Abbreviations.
Statistics may be irrelevant although interesting. Since the Academy opened in 1781 with fifty-six boys in a single schoolhouse, there have been approximately 23,000 students who have entered the school. Of this num- ber, approximately 14,000 are living today. The Alumni Office possesses accurate, current addresses for approximately 12,500. Alumni whose names appear in the alphabetical section without address, and in the class lists with this symbol * are "lost." Class members and friends of alumni so listed will do great service to the Academy if they will notify the Alumni Office when they know the whereabouts or current address of a "lost" alumnus.
There is no such thing as an up-to-date list. In the time of mechanical preparation and printing, a surprisingly large number can be expected to move and change addresses. The Alumni Office has also received notice of

the death of certain alumni after this Directory had officially gone to press. In all cases of error, alumni are cordially requested to bring them to the attention of the Alumni Secretary.
The Twelfth Edition is the collective work of the combined staff of the Alumni Office under the supervision of Miss Gertrude Starks. Staff mem- bers who have worked on this Directory, either in a part-time or full-time capacity, include Mrs. Carl M. Caspar, Mrs. Kenneth E. Haley, Mrs. Ralph S. MacDonald, Miss Elisabeth Schmiedtgen, Mrs. Theodore R. Seabrooke, Miss Deborah A. Smith, and Mrs. Ruth C. Taylor. For combining this editorial work with their regular office assignments, they deserve a special word of thanks from the Alumni Association.
John C. Grady, '44AP, of the George Grady Press, New York City, printers of this Directory, furnished valuable comments and assistance in the preparation of this edition. The Alumni Association is grateful to him and the personnel of his firm for their special interest in the publication of this volume.

ABBREVIATIONS OF OCCUPATIONS AND PROFESSIONS
Listed below are the abbreviations used in describing the present occupation or profession where known of the Alumni in the alphabetical section of the Directory. In the majority of listings, this information has been provided by the alumnus himself in answer to the census questionnaires directed to the entire alumni list.
The occupational code chosen to describe a business or occupation applies to the nature of the business and not to the particular work of the individual within that business. Thus, the advertising director of an oil company is shown to be in the oil business and not in advertising. This method of selecting the proper key was chosen after a lengthy study of numerous alumni directories of other schools and colleges. Established as a fairly general practice, this method was adopted because individuals change positions within a company more frequently than they change companies.
Users of this Directory should be reminded that addresses and occupations presently listed under one of the several military designations (usn, usmc, etc.) will probably not be accurate for men of the younger classes over too long a period of time.
