School Board Report
FOR 1895.
DISTRICT NO. I.
The spring and fall terms of sixteen weeks were taught by Agnes D. Clark. The scholars in this school are all young. They made rare progress in their studies, showing that the teacher had their welfare at heart and did all she could to advance them in their studies.
DISTRICT NO. 2.
The spring term of seven weeks was taught by Alice A. Wells. Miss Wells taught a good scliool. She was thorough in her methods, not allowing the scholars to go over anything until it was thoroughly understood. Good progress was made in all the branches taught. The fall term of nine weeks was taught by Mary Thompson. Miss Thompson is a graduate of Hingham, Mass., High school and also of the Quincy, Mass., Training school. This was her first district school and it was a success. She intro- duced some methods that added interest to the school and good progress was made.
DISTRICT NO. 4.
The spring and fall terms of seventeen weeks were taught by Herbert E. Follansbee. This school numbers about thirty pupils, the majority of them young. Where there
17
are so many young children it is difficult for the teacher to give as much personal attention to each pupil as in smaller schools. This school made some progress in their studies.
DISTRICT NO. 5.
The spring and fall terms of sixteen weeks were taught by Annie C. Brown. The scholars are mostly young. Fair progress was made in their studies. Mrs. Brown seemed to have an interest in the school and tried to advance the pupils in their studies.
It seems to me there is a great lack of interest by the parents in the public schools I have visited. In no case have I seen or known of father or mother visiting the schools, a fact which surprised me very much. We are supposed to have an interest in our children, to provide for them food, clothing and education as our means will admit and to make sacrifices for them when necessary. How important then that we give them all the schooling in our power, that they may gain knowledge to fight successfully the battle of life. In these days those without education are forced to the rear and rarely achieve success. How often do we hear the remark, "If I had a better educa- tion how much easier it would be to engage in business or to accomplish the common duties of life." Do not, there- fore, deprive your children of a single day of school. See that they go let the weather be what it may or the work at home ever so pressing. Do not cheat them of one of the most precious gifts in your power to bestow.
JOHN N. KINNE.
