In recent years the town has been fortunate in that no substantial claims for damages for injuries in the use of the highways have arisen. But this year has been an excep- tion, and three substantial claims were presented against the town. These claims were settled without litigation upon terms which probably effected a large saving for the town.

The tax rate for the past year was higher than usual be- cause of a mistake of the legislature in the apportionment of the state tax. The rate per thousand dollars of the state tax for the town was $4.66, when it ought to have been not more than $2.61. The state tax for 1914 has been paid under protest, and proceedings are under way to recover, if possible, the tax paid under protest, amounting to over $1600. The apportionment under which the state and county tax for 1914 was assessed was also intended to apply to the assessment of the state and county tax for 1915. As a result of action taken by the town in respect to the tax for 1914 and application to the legislature for relief, a new apportionment has been enacted by the present leg- islature, which changes the rate for 1915 from $4.66 to $2.51, and which will save the town for 1915 approximately two thousand dollars.

REPORT OF PERMANENT BRIDGE CON- STRUCTION.

The water way at Heath's Mill had to be newly covered or filled, and it seemed prudent to fill and save the ex- pense of repair on this unnecessary bridge permanently. This was filled with stone and covered with suitable dirt and made as near permanent as possible. At the March town meeting it was voted to raise $2,000 to build a new bridge in North Bow, After careful consideration by the board, it was decided that the bridge could be built for less money and as strong by day's work as by contract. The abutments are built of concrete, mixed 1-2-3. The bridge is steel, with twenty-inch I beams, reinforced with a concrete floor and corrugated steel arches. This bridge was examined by one of the state engineers and pro- nounced O. K., and is as near permanent as is possible, and strong enough for any load it may be called upon to carry.
