I have examined the reports of the selectmen, treasurer and school board, and find them to be satisfactory.

14
REPORT OF THE SCHOOL BOARD.
Generally speaking, we may consider the past year a successful one in Orford's school history. With one exception the schools have been in charge of teachers who have filled the positions for several terms previous to this year and their recent work has been fully up to the standard of excellence established in the past which has been so satisfactory to most people interested in our educational institutions.
At the upper street school we found it necessary to employ three different teachers, we believe each labored faithfully for the best inter- ests of those in their charge. If results did not always seem to warrant the effort expended it could only be charged to the peculiar environ- ment of some pupils who attend this school which we believe is respon- sible for a regretable lack of appreciation of what the child owes the teacher in the way of obediance and personal effort.
The school board has found it necessary to call upon the truant officer somewhat more frequently than usual. There has been same improvement in the matter of attendance though there have been a few cases where this has been far from what it should be. Our schools call for as large an expenditure as any other department of our town affairs and perhaps taxes are raised and paid more cheerfully for schools than for any other purpose. We believe that the public good demands that every child of school age, unless physically or mentally incapable, should be present every day the schools are in session and we intend to do all in our power to attain such a condition.
We wish to call the attention of those who propose to send scholars to high schools or academies within the state to the fact that they should notify the school board of their intention before doing so, as otherwise there may be a question raised as to the liability of the town to pay the tuition.
For more detailed information you are referred to the treasurer's report and to the table of statistics.
Respectfully submitted,
For the School Board.
EDWARD P. STONE.
