REPORT OF THE SCHOOL BOARD OF RICHMOND, N. H.,

FOR THE YEAR ENDING FEBRUARY 15, 1898.

In compliance with the law the School Board pre- sents the twelfth annual report of the schools under the town system. The same number of schools have been maintained as in the preceding few years. All except No. 6 have had 24 weeks each. Seven different teachers have been employed, and in a majority of cases satisfactorily. However hard we try to secure good teachers we are most sure to meet with failures. In some schools the same teacher has been retained for several terms to the satisfaction of all concerned. It is positive that a school will make better progress with the same teacher term after term if there is a union of teacher, parents and scholars, but where there is a disunion (however well qualified a teacher is) bad results will follow. As our teachers come to us as strangers, encourage them in their work rather than discourage, teach the children to love and respect their teachers, and to enter manhood and womanhood honored by all. As we enter upon another year may all feel it a duty to assist in making our schools better

14

15

and more attractive. £ Let the average attendance equal the average number belonging, then we shall have schools and scholars to be proud of.

The number of pupils registered exceeds the num- ber for several years past. This is partly due to the emigration to this town of families with young children of school age.

Whole number of pupils enrolled, 97.

Average number belonging, 96.

Average daily attendance, 7212.

Visits by School Board, 57.

Visits by others, 401.

SCHOOL HOUSES.

No. 2 was painted inside, also the floor oiled. No. 4 was painted on the outside and new windows put in. No. 5 needs painting inside, also some plastering done, and some repairing done to outbuildings at No. 5 and No. 13. The school houses will then be in a very good condition.

LUCY J. FREEMAN, NELLIE H. PRESCOTT, MOSES CASS, School Board.
