REPORT OF THE SCHOOL BOARD.
Citizens of Stoddard:
During the past year the schools have been managed in about the same way as for the last several years, viz., three schools in town and those living in former districts where schoolhouses have been abandoned have been schooled out of town. The out of town tuition has been as follows: $36 to Sullivan and $12.75 to Marlow. Seventy-two weeks of school have been maintained in town, attended by 52 different pupils. The same teachers have been employed in each school through the year. Some at- tempt has been made to enforce the attendance laws with the co-operation of the county solicitor and the state superintendent of public instruction, but this method of securing attendance upon our schools is not as satisfactory as the hearty co-operation of the parents of the children.
So much has been said in former reports in regard to absenteeism and tardiness, that we feel as though further comment is useless as a means of correction, especially in view of the fact that after all our efforts there were a total of 224 days absence out of 120 days school for 52 scholars. Some were tardy, as usual-76 marks in all.
There is more or less dissatisfaction in regard to con- veyance, and we trust that this matter will receive atten- tion at the annual school meeting. The law was changed at the last session of the legislature requiring the enumer- ation of the children to be made in October. Arthur T. Hodgkiss was appointed agent of the school board to make the enumeration, and reported 26 boys and 27 girls between the ages of 5 and 15 years.
In detail the report is as follows :
30
SCHOOL NO. 1-CENTRE.
The spring term of 12 weeks was taught by Miss Hattie F. Stephen of Westford, Mass., who secured the good will of the community, and taught a successful school. Whole number of pupils 22. All attended to read- ing, writing and arithmetic, 21 spelling, 12 geography and grammar, 10 history, 9-physiology, 1 bookkeeping. Cases of tardiness 27. Number of visits by school board 10, by citizens and others 41. Number on roll of perfect atten- dance 2. Wages of teacher per month $30.
The fall term of twelve and two-fifths weeks was taught by the same teacher with even better success than in the spring. Whole number of pupils attending 17. All studied reading, writing and arithmetic; 15 spelling, 12 geography, 10 grammar, 8 history, 9 physiology, 1 book- keeping, 1 composition. Instances of tardiness 22. Num- ber of visits by school board 6, by citizens and others 8. Wages of teacher per month $30.
SCHOOL NO. 2-(NEAR MR. POLLARD'S).
Both terms were taught by Miss Iva F. Gee of Mar- low. This is a small school of small scholars, and Miss Gee gave good satisfaction in the spring, but in the fall there was complaint of lack of government. Spring term, 11 weeks. Whole number of pupils attending 7. All studied reading, writing and spelling; 3 arithmetic, 1 geography. Cases of tardiness 9, visits by school board 5, by citizens and others 26. Wages of teacher per month $20.
The fall term was 12 weeks in length. Number of pupils attending 7. All studied reading and writing; 6 spelling, 4 arithmetic, 1 each of geography and grammar. Instances of tardiness 11, on roll of perfect attendance 3, visits by school board 6, by citizens and others 5. Wages of teacher per month $20.
· SCHOOL NO. 3-(So. STODDARD).
This school was taught by the same teacher for the
31
whole year. We were exceedingly fortunate in securing Mrs. Maud A. Page for this school, as she is a teacher of signal ability whose work is effective and progressive. The spring term consisted of 12 weeks and was attended by 20 different pupils. All studied reading, writing, spell- ing and arithmetic; 11 grammar; geography and composi- tion and 6 history. Cases of tardiness, none. On roll of perfect attendance 7. Visits by school board 5, by citizens and others 38. Wages of teacher per month $31.
The fall term was 12 3-5 weeks in length and was at- tended by 21 pupils. All studied reading, writing, spell- ing and arithmetic, 10 geography, grammar and com- position, and 2 bookkeeping. On roll of perfect attend- ance 6, instances of tardiness 7. Visits by school board 3, by citizens and others 26. Wages of teacher, per month, $31.
We find the following names on the
ROLL OF HONOR.
For the year-Cora E. Smith, Mabel Sweeney, Cecil T. McClure, Kenneth D. McClure.
For one term-George E. Smith, Florence V. Smith, Bertha Whippie, Fred O. Whippie, George L. Whippie, Maude E. Hobbs, Florence L. Hobbs, Marion F. Everett, Louis C. Pollard, Almus W. Pollard.
